Propagating Banana Plants by Corm Division to Produce More Banana Tree Offshoots

Propagating banana plants is easy! All you need is a banana plant with a healthy corm that has a few eyes growing on the corm. The eyes will sprout offshoots or pups from the corm that will grow into a new banana plant.
My banana plants fell over during heavy rain and strong winds. I could have replanted the banana plants back into the ground, but since winter was coming I didn't think that they would survive through the winter where it reached as low as 28 degrees F. I was right some of my smaller bananas did not make it through the winter.
I use a pruning saw to cut the psuedostem from the corm. The look for the yes on the corm and divide the corm so that each piece of the corm has an eye growing. Each eye could grow into a new banana plant, but some maybe too young and will not grow.
I left the corms in my greenhouse for the fall and winter and of the four corms that I saved. I divided two of them, the other two did not have any eyes growing. So I ended up with 6 corms. After six months in my greenhouse the four corms I dug up became six banana plants. I gave three of the plants away and planted three of them in my garden. This year I expect them to grow to about 4 feet tall and by the end of the third season of growing they should reach ten feet tall!

Help please!? I live in NorCal too! In the foothills outside of Sac. I bought a dwarf gran nain in April from a big box store. It had about 4 wine and green coloured leaves on it and was about 2-3 ft tall. I transplanted it into a big 20” container with potting soil, compost and kitchen scraps at the bottom for some compost in place fertilizer. I water it often always keeping soil moist. I put it in full sun like it says on the tag it needs. Now about 6 weeks later, All the leaves have now dried up and died. The new leaf coming out the middle hasn’t unfolded yet but it’s already turning brown and dried on the edges. It hasn’t grown that much either it just seems to be dying. So I moved it into the shade under a small tree thinking the full sun was burning it 🤷‍♀️ now It gets filtered sun. Didn’t seem to help so I just cut off all the dead leaves and left 1 leaf about 2 days ago. Hoping to start over. The only sign of new healthy life is the 2 very small pups that have recently come up. Do you know what I’m doing wrong? Should I move it back into full sun? Give it More specific fertilizer? Am I giving Too much water? I’m failing my first go at bananas in its peak growing time 😔

I think your plant suffered transplant shock. The mother plant may be dying that’s why it grew pups, so that it could survive. I would put it back in full sun and keep the soil moist not soggy. You can cut the mother plants psuedostem and see if it is still green in the middle. If it’s not green, keep cutting until the psuedostem is a few inches above the soil line. If its still not green it is dead. Let the pups grow. The good thing is now you have two grand nains.

@@Tropifornia thanks so much for your reply! When I cut the dead leaves on the stem were still green inside. So hopefully it’ll recover just fine! Should I just cut off all the dead leaves now and let it regrow? I’ll also put it back in full sun.

Those bananas that you gave me are in the ground and i have been watering them but still no growth. Do you know wrong am i doing?

Are they still green? If they are, they should be okay. My bananas only have one to two leaves, but they are slowly growing.

I would wait because I propagated them only a couple of days before I gave them to you. The newly propagated bananas take many months to start growing on their own because they were cut off from the mother corm. They are still alive, when they do start growing they will grow fast.
