Propagating Kiwi Fruit Vines - It Works?

Kiwi fruit vines can be propagated by grafting or by rooting cuttings. Kiwis are actually best rooted from softwood cuttings, taken from new growth. Both methods above can be used to produce good vines and crops.
In this video, I'll take you back when I took the cuttings from the vine and placed them in water and then update you on the progress of the cuttings I took nearly 8 weeks ago.
The results are pretty astonishing to me...
I'm learning quite a bit about these plants and I'm happy you are here to join me as we watch their journey.
With kiwi, you need to have at least 1 male and 1 female plant in order to produce fruit. In fact, you only need 1 male plant for every 8-10 female plants. I have about 12 plants growing so I'm hoping that at least one is a male. I'm assuming I have at least 1 female plant.

Hello everyone. In my last Kiwi series update, I planned to try to propagate the cuttings I took from the kiwi vines I've grown from seed. This video shows their progress. If you've missed the series, the playlist is below: ru-vid.com/group/PLKJSapt21HvXLhzkeCvv88Rqh27LyCKEW Thanks for watching!

Rob Backyard Gardenerr I would say thats a success. I didnt think water only , with 2 month submersion would work but you proved it. On one of the foreign channels they take a green stem say a foot long with several leafs . They suspend the bottom end in a partically water filled bottle then air layer mid stem . The air layer is out of the water bottle but inclosed along with the leaves in a upside down bottle . Looks like an hour glass

Bob Brawley Wow... that's a pretty unique method. I figured air layering would work but to air layer from a cutting seems very intriguing. Thanks for sharing Bob.

Good onya RBG, thanks. I have been told tho that u should take cuttings from known fruit producing vines as this plant grows both male and female - males dont grow the fruit. So u need both, ratio 1 male to 4 fem if u indeed plan/hope to grow fruit. Anyway, Im going to give it a go. Thanks again from NZ.

Planted a grape vine about 3 years ago and this summer is the first summer it’s gotten fruit on it. I’m moving and doubt I can dig the roots up to move it too. So thanks to your video I can at least try and get some new vines to go with me. Thanks

I think you could take a vine like that, leave it connected and put it into a pot to root while connected. Or even get a piece of house gutter and lay that down filled wiht soil, the entire little vine placed in it with the node covered with soil, it'd root from each node and give many plants that could be unsnipped in a couple months.
@RobBackyardGardenerr
@RobBackyardGardenerr 2 года назад
Yeah, that would likely root faster too!

That's a fantastic video. Fully value the info and appreciate you sharing with us! Hope these have become a main source of nutrition, i eat these loads with the skin on.. given that they hold multiple times vit c in comparison to oranges, why wouldn't you want to ingest the entire fruit; well worth cultivating. Just a wee tip though, something that we hope is beneficial to you or to anyone reading this: as the nodes show & then when the small teeniest of shoots pushes through those nodes, when there then maybe become more than one you can remove the biggest leaf, giving more encouragement of further new growth, and with that shall begin more & more roots. That's how we cultivated ours in uk and process took a mere 4-5 weeks in autumn before long roots appeared. Realise there are other factors to take into account, ie, temp (our distiller radiates brilliant heat for a few hours daily/late evening, also daylight hours depending on season & geographical situ, feeding methods (comfrey & nettle, with aloe vera chucked in for good measure- astonishing results our rooting hormone methods, we also talk a lot to the plants/crops, and when cultivating we tend to have been habitually changing their surroundings occasionally as it's what works.. although only if we have time 😅 for real though! In gratitude 💫✌🏽

Try adding an aspirin to the water, or some aloe chunks. They are both root stimulators. The aloe seems to never go bad also. Best of luck to you!!!

Do kiwi plants need a lot of water? Mine stay rather close to the pot for now (about 4 months old now and a some 15-20cm high), I'm pretty sure the pot is more than big enough though. I'm just not sure if I underwater them but I don't want to overwater them either... Same for my citrus trees growing, but perhaps those just take a long time to grow. I'm even planning on drying and mixing some banana peels as fertilizer for both my kiwi and my citrus plants, good idea or is this going to burn them? Thanks for the info man!
@RobBackyardGardenerr
@RobBackyardGardenerr 6 лет назад
Mine get a lot of water due to their locations in my yard. They seem to prefer it, but I don't have any in areas that get very little water so it may be worth trying out. Citrus needs to have periods of dry spells followed by thorough waterings. You do need to ensure that the soil is well draining and that you don't let the roots sit in moisture as they are prone to root rot. As far as the banana peels - they won't burn the plants. Banana peels contain nutrients but they don't contain everything for your plants. As they decompose, they will add potassium, as well as small amounts of nitrogen, phosphorous and magnesium, just like a slow release fertilizer so I say go ahead and add them - I add them to my compost pile regularly. Thanks for watching!

If you cut away the leaves on the twiggs the roots will grow faster. Also when you use aspirinepowder ( crush an aspirine ) it will grow roots faster and stronger. Beside that the water will be better propected against sicknesses of may courses not gooing good in the proces.

Sibi Jose technically vines, like grapes. They do develop a trunk but only due to training them similarly like you would train a grapevine. I really need to get a good system/trellis setup for mine.

Just keep in mind Kiwis grow from new growth (previous season) so cutting back new growth effectively forces you to wait until next year before you get kiwis on those branches which were cut .
