Propane Locker for Camper Van - Is This Dangerous?

It is good, to show how to made it. So I hope, more guys would build One for his Propane Bottle. (me too) But also straps needed, to fix the gas bottle. Here in Germany you must do an anual safety check of your propane system, if solid installed. Every year. An expert pumps air in the system, to check, if its not leaking gas. Also looks, if damages in the system. Or if gas tubes and regulators are too old, because of rubber. Most gas parts are cheap in germany. So easy, to use new parts, for better safety Every check is reported in a small yellow paperwork. Where you must show it, ie entering a campground. Or for separate safety check of the vehicle. Long ago: In Switzerland has burned a lot of camper vehicles at one campground. Maybe because of one, with a failing gas system.

My locker box has been great inside my van. No issues. People fear propane for no reason because what people see online. Explosions due to no locker box, unsafe handling and so forth. Thank you for the video.

Interesting. I've never used propane - but all the things associated with "camping", "roughing it", "overnighting", and "vanlife" are pretty new to me.

That was a more through build of a propane cabinet than I see on a lot of other channels. How many have you seen just in a cabinet underneath a kitchen counter with a ton of cleaning supplies? Well done!

I think that it is good that you have a bottom lip on your box. It will help a little. But it might not be enough. The reason the standards suggest a top opening vs. a side opening is that (as you state) propane is heavier than air. So if it leaks (more like when) it will pool at the bottom of the locker. You DO have a vent for it to pour out of which is good. But it is not like water. it will not rush out in seconds, and air currents will slow it down. So if you have a leak and you open the side door, propane might still be built up in the locker (higher than your threshold). This would then spill out into your living area when you open the door. If it reaches a spark it could ignite. A top opening has much less chance of that happening as even a relatively significant leak would hopefully still be pooling in the bottom 80% (made up number) of the locker when you open the top. You might consider hooking a fan up to force vent the locker, but I have no idea what the consequences of a spark from the fan would be (remember what happened when Apollo 13 stirred their oxygen tanks)? :) Finally, you appear to be venting the propane right next to where the exhaust system is... I have no idea if that is an added danger or not. It seems like something you might want to keep in consideration though. I appreciate that you are presenting your projects here, and that you don't make any claims for authority. I also do not really know all that much about the subject so I want to make that abundantly clear. But a slip-up with something like a propane tank could be significant. Just my 2 cents.

Your vent is way too small. Should be 3/4 inch diameter on inside of pipe to allow for gas to vent and air to come in!
