Kerosene heaters video: • Torpedo Kerosene Heate...
Ignition Module I used in the video amzn.to/3kWVCiD GHP 39E0-0008-00( any 39E0-00*-* will work the same (the length of the leads is the only difference in model numbers). The one I bought must have been on clearance as it was cheaper than what these are now. If you're replacing a single wire ignitor with one of these 2 spark plug lead wires units; ONE lead will hook to the existing spark plug and the other lead will ground out to the frame or housing that makes electrical contact with the outside(threads) of the spark plug. You can flatten out the end and put a screw in it or something similar. This differs from what I did in the video.
I ask nothing of my viewers but awesome people are constantly asking how they can support the channel:

I’ve fixed several things for a friend of mine, mower, snowblower etc…, and I only charge him for the parts I use. So he just gave me a Reddy Heater RLP35, 35000 btu propane heater. Before I try to use it I searched for and found your video and I’m glad I did. Now I feel educated just enough to give mine a try. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us.

Thank you for the all the trouble shooting tips which helped me fix my heater. My problem was the heater would start and run for just a minute or two. If I bypassed the high-limit switch, the heater would run but get so hot, the unit would literally glow red. Eventually took the regulator from the hose to my local propane store. The guy said the regulator was either on or off and could not adjust the propane/air mixture. Took my regulator home and revisited some of your tips about the propane possibly "freezing" the regulator. So I put my heat gun on the regulator and used a couple of rubber mallets to "tap" around it its housing. Reassembled everything for the umpteenth time and success. Still have the fumes and it sounds like an F-16 taking off but hey, it warms the garage. Couldn't have fixed it without your insight. Thanks for taking the time to make the video and answer questions.

Friends Dad and uncle were working on a car in a cold shop this last fall and used a heater similar to that. They failed to partially open up a door or window for ventilation. Friends mom found them in the morning. They had died from not having shop vented. Please always remind people to vent. Your vids are very educational, thanks.

Dave D I have a pretty well sealed and insulated garage and made it a point a few years ago to put the Carbon Monoxide detector in there. I can run the heater for 8 hours and it will never set off the detector. But if I start a small engine it goes off in 60 seconds. I feel very safe running these heaters in an enclosed shop but a Carbon Monoxide detector is always a good idea.

sixtyfiveford Hi 65, I would tend to think that you should match the heater to the space to be heated. I am not sure, but those two men who died may have been asphyxiated, not CO poisoned, esp. if the heater was too powerful and just consumed all the oxygen. Dave D didn`t mention the cause of death. Kero heaters will not poison by CO. You may get black lung, though LOL. Thanks for the videos.

I have a duraheat 60000 btu and it works fine but I have noticed in the last few days it is blowing off a lot more smell of unburnt propane like there is propane that is not getting burnt fully is there a way to clean some opening or something because I use this little heater daily for dogs.Like I said it seems like lots of unburnt fuel.

Thx!! 🤔 Watching this video I'm pretty sure my thermal coupler is bad! Because it only stays lit when I push and hold the override button. Don't care if I hold it for 5 minutes it's going to the IMMEDIATELY shut off when I let it go. I'm wondering if there's any way to test it or are the symptoms pretty much saying that it's bad? Also I hope we can find a correct model thermal coupler. 😮 BTW. I have the exact same model so I can just follow this video exactly . 👍👍 Subscribed 👌

Thank you for this video. I didn't know about that huge gap on the plug - I bought a 400k BTU Propane on the cheap because it wouldn't fire up. They had replaced the plug before I got it and the only thing I did was check it for spark - When that didn't work, I replaced it, no help. Then I gave in and found your video - 5 minutes later and two adjustments on the gap (too wide at first), I think that thing could heat a house up in 3 or 4 minutes!

Great video, the most informative I've found. Any tips for testing the gas valve solenoid? I was able to get mV on the thermocouple, but even if getting the thermocouple red-hot, it doesn't keep the gas valve open. I get the thermocouple red hot, press the plunger for the gas, I can only get gas to flow when I'm holding the plunger (testing with the thermocouple where I can hit it with a torch).

Great video on how these heaters work and areas of troubleshooting. I have an older Dyna Glo 40k unit (RMC-FA40) that won't stay lit and could use some help. Already replaced the thermocouple. Blew lines out with forced air. Good continuity on wires and high temp switch. It fires right up and blows heat like crazy as long as the gas knob is depressed. Cuts out the second it's released. I've tried letting it warm up for 60+ seconds and no luck. I'm stumped! Appreciate your help!

"Clicker" style ignitor like a bbq grill (which works) and thermocouple/high temp wires connect to bottom of gas valve to activate the magnet. No relay/plastic cover to speak of. Should make it easy to diagnose, but guess not. I jumpered the high temp sensor wires and unit still shuts off when knob is released. Multi-meter shows current flowing to the magnet after it shuts off, but wondering if it's enough or if the magnet do-hickey is shot. I'm at a loss.

I have a 60 k BTU pro-temp heater and a 60k BTU master heater. The flame on the master is by far greater than the flame on the pro-temp. If I run the pro Temp for 15 minutes in my garage my eyes start to burn. But I can run the master in the garage for 8 hours with no problems. I swapped the regulator off of the master and put it on the pro Temp and there was no change in the flame. The master heater can heat up my 24 x 24 garage in about 10 to 15 minutes, then I put it on low. But even if I run the pro-temp heater on high I still have a chill in the garage the entire time
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 5 лет назад
You're getting a RICH mixture of propane to air in the burn. You need less propane and about the only way this is accomplished is with the jet/nozzle. The one burning your eyes is more than likely jetted for lower altitude(larger jet) which puts too much propane fuel through. At higher altitudes with less oxygen the jet is smaller to make a more complete efficient burn.

The 2 terminals that connect to the relay "stops operation" to what though? If thermocouple is bad, it's not producing voltage...and no voltage is produced by manually holding plunger either...so something else would not be functioning either if the two terminals were feeding voltage to some other stop operation. I suspect it goes the other direction as a fail safe and is fed TO the thermocouple FROM the relay instead. Such as when the high limit switch is tripped. Perhaps it grounds out the voltage in the thermocouple so that the voltage will release the plunger? I came to this video looking for an answer to this very same subject. I've got a thermocouple on hand I can use today until the one I have to order comes in....but the one I have is not one with the 2 terminals. I'm trying to do a little work around temporarily.... just need to find a little more info.

@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 9 лет назад
Yeah, I almost solely run my Kerosene/Diesel heater. Carbon Monoxide isn't a problem with these heaters. But the one fear would be if you used a heater to large for the space it would use up all the oxygen and asphyxiation could happen. The area would have to be pretty air tight as well. Asphyxiation is generally what people die from when they use a heater in the cab of their truck and go to sleep.

Smashing tutorial, i didnt know how the thermo couple worked, to be honest i had never really thought about it at all lol. So connecting a multimeter (in volts mode) across the output would yeald some potential, and a resistor across the meter while taking voltage readings would simulate the solinoid loading, you could test the fitness of the thermocouple. Or just say "Bugger that, ill just stick a new one in" ha ha :-))

The control knob turn past the off position then counter clockwise to off, low, medium and high. The instructions say turn it to high for the ignitor to light it and then back down to where I need it. I thought the control in the off position would turn the heat and the fan off. It seems to me the flame is only lit at the nozzle and doesn't spread to the rest of the surface plate or whatever you call it. I can barley get the shop to 70 on a 55 degree day and that's struggling. In a way it's like blowing a fan from behind a propane torch. I wonder how to fix it. Great Video. I have a Dewalt DXH90FAV. Could not find a replacement thermocouple anywhere. I tested it, it measured the correct 20+ mv. But still did not work. I thought I would check the ma, and found it produced 0 ma. I checked it against a one that I know works, and it produced about the same voltage, as well as I think 20 ma as well. All I need to find is a thermocouple that is about 10" long and has the right thread for my unit.

It looks like this. It does have a brass block with two connectors coming out. Sorry about the crappy photo. I had to use my scanner, as my camera is on the fritz. drive.google.com/file/d/0ByPnRZK3U8Yjc3BXUjJhZklBTUE/view?usp=sharing

Those 2 terminals connect into a relay on the electronic panel. I've had the contact points on the relay(they can be cleaned) get oxidized and not work. You can bypass the relay by connecting these two spade connects on your thermocouple to determine if it is working correctly.

So I have a quick question. I tested continuity between the two wires it’s self and nothing. The heaters fan comes on the spark plug is sparking and propane is flowing. I don’t want to dump a bunch of money in it when the a new heater is only 100 dollars. By the way same exact heater that’s in your video. Any help would be great thanks!

John Hondrogen I reposted this so I can get a little feedback. Thanks! I have a Universal 85-FAC All Pro SPC-85 made by Scheu and have been trying to get it running. It's been idle for 10 years and worked great before. Here's what I have done: Full 20 lb propane tank Cleaned and gapped plug (and I've taken everything else apart to check) New thermocouple, relay and high temp. sensor Taken apart lp hose and regulator and am getting propane through the hose The unit starts up but with only a small flame (1 inch) and goes out when I release the igniter button no matter how long I hold it. What should I check next? Thanks
@sixtyfiveford

Sounds like your just not getting enough fuel. This can be from the turn on procedure you use with the propane tank, the regulator of the valving that the propane flows through internally. -First, the OPD device built into the propane tank can fight you without proper turn on procedure. Connect everything. Turn the propane tank knob on, wait a few seconds. Now turn it back off for a few seconds(if it is quiet enough in your shop you'll hear a click which is the OPD(overfill protection device) disengaging). Now turn it back on for the final time. Fuel should flow freely. A little background on the OPD: it limits huge out rushes of propane and stops it from being overfilled. The initial connecting and opening the valve can trigger the OPD as it thinks it is a large out rush/leak. -Second, the regulator could be limiting the amount of flow. Disconnect the hose at the heater or anywhere behind the regulator. With the regulator hooked to the propane tank open the propane tank valve. You should get a large volume of propane coming out. A small hiss of propane would signify a defective/limiting regulator. -Third, if both the other check out fine you will need to take apart the valve, piping and nozzle to check for an obstruction.

Do you know which valve coil that is in that heater? I had mine ripped all apart and the part went missing. I see there is two different sizes -7111 and 00503. Based on your video I think it's the 7111 as it is about 1.5" vs 1.25" for the 00503. Not sure changing the thermocouple fixed my problem however I had bought one last winter thanks you this video and just got around to installing it today as it's finally cold again. Without that solenoid valve I can't test it though. Thanks for a great how to video!

I don't recall. However I believe one it larger diameter than the other so you could find one on Ebay or similar and have the seller measure how big of round it is. This will let you know which one you need.

The only other thing is the relay box. It is about the size of an old school ice cube with a black or clear cover and half a dozen wires going to it. The contact points get a little corroded and a very fine(300+) grit sand paper needs to be ran between them to clean them up.

I have an All-Pro SPC-40 (40k BTU) propane heater. It tries to start but the fan actually blows the flame out. If I temporarily block the fan intake it will light normally. The flame still goes out when I release the primer button so I'm sure the thermocouple is bad. My question is, would a bad thermocouple cause both issues?

I have a propane heater like this but my problem is that when it’s running it burns my eyes while I’m the garage. And there is also a nasty sulfur or chlorine kind of smell. Is this something that can be adjusted? I can’t do anything in the garage while it’s running as the eye burn is unbearable. Thank you
@sixtyfiveford

This means it is putting too much fuel into the burn and needs less. It's running rich. The regulator at the propane tank is what controls this and is likely bad.

Mine has good spark and i can smell propane but it won't light. Could it be the regulator?
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 4 года назад
The regulator does go bad but will generally dump tons of propane when it does and or the regulator will leak propane. You should be able to hear it hissing propane while pushing the ignite button. Sometime the propane bottle OPD device can restrict the propane flow if not properly hooked up. Connect the propane hose to the bottle. Turn on the bottle valve. Wait 3 seconds, then turn it back off. You may hear a light click inside the propane bottle. This is the OPD valve resetting. Now turn the valve back on and the OPD should be fully open and ready to deliver propane.

Great video! I have an older model Mr Heater 30-55k btu forced air propane heater (mh55fav) and it runs great after I replaced the thermocouple except for one problem, the flame wont get big at all. When you bypass the thermocouple for starting the heater and on max setting (while running) the flame is only like an inch or two. Do you think the in-line regulator is bad or could it be a clogged orifice? Thanks!
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 6 лет назад
Either the inline regulator or the safety valve on the propane tank is partially close. When you connect a propane tank: turn it on approx 1 turn, then turn it off and wait a few seconds(sometimes you can hear an audible click of the safety valve disengaging), then turn it back on full. This will make sure the safety valve isn't partially shutting off the flow internally.

@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 4 года назад
Safety valve in the tank is slowing the propane flow. You need to follow a few steps when you put on a new tank. -Connect tank -Turn tank valve on and wait 3+sec -Turn tank back off and wait 3+ sec You may hear a light click inside the tank; this is the OPD safety valve disengaging. -Finally turn tank valve on and you're ready to use it.

Your propane safety valve isn't open all the way. To fix this: -Open the valve and wait 2seconds -Shut the valve and wait 2 seconds(you'll hear a click) -Open it back up and you should be good to go. If you hear a click when you open it the second time you will need to close it one more time and reopen it.
