The Dame's had 70 years of hits. A top single every decade since the 1950s - the Propellerheads were lucky enough to have her give them this one. There's a point where you go beyond simply being a hit maker, and become immortal.
These MF’ers came on the scene and dropped ONE album in 1998 and it’s one of the most important electronic/break-beat records of all time. Every single song is a banger and has been licensed in so much media in the late ‘90s and 2000s - The Matrix, Wipeout for N64, and the very first iPod commercial to name a small fraction.
Break-Beat lasted faaaaar too short a time for my tastes...I was down for a few more years. Can you imagine what unholy fusions we could've been gifted if they did?
The whole project is a masterpiece. BBC personnel are perfect, as well as the three brass professors! The sound, the pace, the outfits...and the luxury of high quality black&white.
Have you read up on the director/producer Stewart Morris who did a lot with hert during the 70s and 80s? In the time it should be on tape in one or two runs, and rehearsel was everything. And budget wise the sky is the limit. This is nice reminder of those days..
(yet you hate us. Sorry brother. I have nothing to share with you. We are of the same blood, bro.. I liked this team when I traded music in the 90s. Music is my life.) this song makes me feel cathartic ...Words are as strong as they are wise..
Awesome voice! When Shirley opens the taps, I don't think any other female singer can come close to her power. She makes a Saturn 5 rocket seem under powered!
I think Shirley is the best singer in the uk . I was introduced to her music in my early 20s by an older lady that lived upstairs from me. I was an instant fan. Shes got an amazing vocie. ❤❤❤❤
When this song was released I was DJing at a club in Boston. We had Goth/Industrial nights, Britpop/Mod nights, and Swing/Lounge nights... This was the one track that got played on all three... Perfection for bringing the tribes together. The entire album is a banger and a masterpiece of producing.
I loved this when it came out, still do, a classic amalgam of sounds BEAUTIFULLY arranged and produced and introducing Ms Bassey's voice to a fresh audience. In much the same way as Johnny Cash's rendition of Hurt married different genre's together, it has a totally timeless quality that stands up for itself every time it is heard. We benefit greatly from those composers, arrangers and producers who have a breadth of listening history and an appreciation of many different sounds for their own sake and their capacity to give them back to us in a new form. Great stuff!
There is nothing, nothing, NOTHING better right now than Ms. Shirley Bassey singing this song -- except perhaps for her singing Goldfinger! She is a musical treasure!
I think genre plays a part; Propellerheads were part of the Big Beat scene which was always rather big on combining samples from older songs to make something new, so naturally if any genre was going to be combined with an old Shirley Bassey song it was going to be this one. A similar example of this effect would be Junkie XL' remix of A Little Less Conversation by Elvis Presley. I think the oldest version I can think of where an old song got modernised quite well was the synth version of Music for the Funeral March of Queen Mary that got used in A Clockwork Orange. A good example of the formula put in reverse that I quite like is Crazy in Love by Swing Republic which is an Electro Swing cover of Crazy in Love by Beyonce. Of course this rule isn't 100% true as there are genres that aren't sample based that still combine well with older genres. In recent years it's become clear that Drum and Bass goes pretty well with Rock music. In short, there will always be genres that blend well together, and discovering those genres is all part of the fun :D.
The liner notes of the Propellerheads' album Decksandrumsandrockandroll included the lines: "We would like to extend our maximum respect to Shirley Bassey for honouring us with her performance. We are still in shock...."
Thank you, I had to share your comment to my share post. I was looking to see if it was new version of the song History Repeating...A futuristic retro song. x
@@youknowwhatdaysayinhoe5646 Of course men like you have though they have the right to tell females what they are allowed to do with their own bodies since history began. Looks like a bit of misogyny repeating.
@@steviewondek Number one: There's ANOTHER body or human being if you will, growing inside of their body. It has a soul, a heart, a DNA pattern, feet, ect. sperate from the mother, so it's not HER body she's killing. Science proves what I'm saying, so don't call me a liar! Secondly: I don't hate women, especially that many of them are killed before birth. I actually stand for their rights ( the right to live ). What's the matter with adoption? Why do you have to crush it's little body with a pair of tongs and pull it out, piece by piece 🧩??? That shit hurts, you know!
My late Grandmother saw Shirley in concert here in Australia she said Shirley was the most dynamic performer she had ever watched live. It’s impossible to stay still during this song exciting melody and a magnificent singer in Shirley. God bless her
My Dad was a proud Welshman and loved Shirley, sadly he hasn't been around for over 20 years, but I have to agree with his view, she always sounds great, fabulous, powerful voice
+KodenameKrusty Indeed, it truly is. If you haven't already done so, you ought to watch the video on filming Miss Bassey for the music video. It's pretty interesting.
I love the floor manager break dancing. I saw this in a cinema in 1998. It was playing just before "There's Something About Mary". On the same album they do a cover of the theme from "On Her Majesty's Secret Service", which is my favorite James Bond film.
Can't stop listening to this song and reliving the best comic moments from the film - whether it is Ben Stiller getting his balls stuck in a zipper or Cameron Diaz using a mystery liquid as "hair gel"
This is one of the most amazing songs ever produced in the aging corpse of music. It never gets old! Thank you for this song. LONG LIVE THE PROPELLERHEADS and SHIRLEY BASSEY!
I want to thank the Farrelley brothers for bringing this song to my attention 25-years ago. It's so intoxicating with the coolest vibe and absolutely crushing vocal by Ms. Bassey. I always turn this one up to 11!
Oh my Goddess! The brilliance bursting out of the screen is dazzling. This is perfect in every way. Every time I watch this which is over and over and over it takes me on a trip to heaven. Gushing gratitude to everyone responsible for the making of this video, especially to Ms. Bassey, who rules the world.
The other day I was listening to Jamiroquai and one comment said that they didn't realize that it wasn't a 70's song and I remember this song. Didn't remember name or artist just put 90's song" history "and here I am😁boy I'm glad I found this
Dame Shirley's performance of this song is one of the most compelling moments to come along in a very long time. It gets my day started on a good note!
This is such a great song and video. It never ages and Dame Shirley is just amazing. This song sits comfortably next to all her classic songs. Propellerheads did good!!!
Shirley Bassey... in all her "Voice and Looks" glory ! Up-beat, hip swaying song and a video with great sense of humour ! Excellent ! On all accounts !
I can't believe it's been more than 20 years..my friend would play this in his beat up car on his way to drum n bass parties to get ammped up..lol late nights driving back in the dawn. Great memories even only at 17
Awesome video Always loved this song and the great Shirley Bassey of course! It has a swingin’ sixties groove to it. I can see Catwoman doing the ‘batdance’ with Batman.
I'm a mobile DJ, spinning tunes at corporate events and weddings. I loved this song when it came out and I'm still amazed at it's staying power. As fresh today as 25 years ago. That being said, I never had time to watch videos and only today saw this on RU-vid. Wow! What a great video. Making it look like it was recorded in the 60's by filming in Black & White. Even the turntables are retro, lol.
Possibly my favorite one-hit-wonder and video. The detail of a 'Swinging Sixties' live TV transmission is faultless, the big band brass orchestration impeccable and the track cleverly melds a grand John Barry-era theme with a Nineties vibe. Plus a typical dash of British humor with the breakdancing crew and the presenter's slightly reverential tone. Shirley Bassey shows how if you take care of a strong voice, when you get older it develops a timbre that cannot be replicated by teens and twenties. The richness matures, like a vintage Rolls-Royce. Few singers of any age could challenge and overcome so heavy a tune. She beats it into the ground. Her variations around it- the momentary pauses and resumptions- add to the sense of pushing forward. Like the best swing-era numbers, the drive is relentless. And as a bonus, the lyrics are among the wisest written since Bill Haley and Elvis came to the fore and pop became all about pandering to teenage illusions. Well done, Propellerheads.
Technically we had 1.5 albums from these guys, maybe 1.8 if I include both of the E.P's (Extended Play E.P. and Dive E.P), but I get your meaning. They quit the business way to soon.
wow!!! l am having so much fun watching this. shirley is superb with her proper operatic voice with just enough growl so you take notice, and she's still got the moves. what class. the horns are classic. the drummer, a cutesy and the keyboard/piano player/DJ.......well he is just making me chuckle. he is shakin it, dancin about and looks like he really wants to get loose. the break dancers are awesome. this is a well put together video. this song was played at the end of a movie I was watching on a cable channel, that's what brought me here. it's got a real driving groove to it. I have been listening to this for two hours straight-back to back. that's how much I love it. wish it was an extended version or a loop. Thank you for posting.
