Thank you so much for this video. It may seem like a simple thing but having owned 5 different mini cooper’s (my kids’ cars) it’s so reassuring to hear a professional say exactly what I’ve always thought. “‘it is virtually impossible to read these dipsticks”…!
If you're ever driving through Baldwin Park come and check this guy out. His shop is very clean and his prices are amazingly fair and affordable. Great customer service 👍😎
Thanks for a great video. Crazy design for a dipstick but your vid is very comprehensive. 1.6s and 82k just bought and engine light caused mild... Panic.
Hey Dude!! Deano from Biloxi, MS. I have a 2012 Countryman S. It does burn a quart of oil every 1500 miles or so, like you mentioned here. Thanks for this very informative video. I had no idea how to correctly read the dipstick, until now. I would like to mention, be sure to have lots of light when reading the stick. That really helps! Keep up the great videos.
Thank you so much for this video... I just managed to add two quarts of oil (after it took me at least 5 minutes to be able to lift the hood on my 2008 Clubman S 😳) and read the dipstick... Without your video, I think I would have been lost and given up.
Thanks for confirming my concern that the dipstick is rubbish and its very difficult to check. If the material was lighter in colour it would be easier to see. The issue is it goes round a corner and catches oil. I actually overfilled mine and it burned it off. Got the rattly timing and found it very low added about a litre and its much better but I agree you have put little in and retest after a couple of days. It's a pain but better than wrecking the engine. I know the N14 engine has a bad rep but my car has done 83000 and is still great. However did have to change the oil pan gasket at 78000 and the rocker cover gasket recently. Still goes like a rocket and returns really good fuel consumption (if I behave well). Really good detailed video.
Hi! I have the new mini replacement dipstick thT is a flexible stick, and had 9 holes, much easier to read. But I don't know what the oil level is as the holes fill up or are empty. How do I know when to add oil. Please, help. Thank you!
I don't understand what was wrong with BMW. They made everything so complicated on this car. Nobody can make aftermarket parts because they're so specialized. I pulled out the dipstick myself and I'm familiar with those in Japanese cars and American... So I'm looking for like the crosshairs on a basic dipstick.. and then I seen this. I just don't understand the attempt to try so hard to be different where it makes everything so hard on parts. Even the windshield wipers I couldn't buy in a store I had to order off Amazon because of the specialty clip. I need to let my car rest and I need to go check that oil. Thanks for vid.
Great video. So precise, so informational, and so informative. Also very well spoken clear, and intelligently so we can all understand. Great video. I’m liking prescribing.❤️👍☘️
Thank you for the demo and info 👍🏼👊🏼 I’ve got the same dipstick as the one in video and what a pain in the butt it is to read 🥴 2nd Generation R56 Mini One 🏴🇬🇧
Thank you I just purchased a 2008 mini S series. I had no idea that it normally goes through oil . I was just checking it and it is low . Does every one of these engines of these models burn oil commonly ? Is the oil consumption due to the turbo or does it matter ?
The Mini dipstick is an utterly ridiculous design - oil coloured ! In bright sunshine just go into the shade to read it. I wonder if you can buy a replacement that is white or has notches or something? My Mini Cooper S seems to burn oil sporadically. Have to check it every 500-1000 miles. No oil leaks. I change the oil every 5k miles.
Good vid mate, crap dipstick. On the coolant, any idea where the bleeding bleed screw is? I'm British. Loads of Cooper S vids but no plain Cooper tutorials. I cannot for the life of me find the coolant bleed screw on a 2010 Cooper LCI version. Please help!
Bleed screw anomaly!!!! Update to previous email. This Cooper has no bleed screw, must be a mutant version I've got, anyway I have sorted it now, I think, by revving the gonads out of it as it's being topped up and rad now gets hot and fan kicks in about 20 to 30 mins later. Hopefully no other probs. Again many thanks for replying to a Brit cit mate. Kind regards Simon.
Great video! I was very confused when I first looked at the dipstick. Wish I lived near you, I would definitely take my 2008 Cooper S to you. I am in Montpelier, ID and I have been trying to find a mechanic that can work on my Mini. I assume there must be someone in either Pocatello or Logan (both are an hour and a half away) but so far no luck.
I'm a new Mini owner (love this car) who had the same problem of reading the dipstick. The check engine light came on when it was low but its still on weeks later. I went to a Meineke to have the error code read but the reader got no code which is a conflict. I've gone to my local BMW dealer but they're too busy, or so they claim. Should the light be on after weeks and 4 quarts of oil added? I have a 2012 mini cooper countryman s all4
Hi could you please explain why my mini says: Engine oil pressure too low. Possible engine damage. Switch off engine. Continue driving if not possible. Checked oil level and fine all around dipsticks (east/west)
I bring my Mini in to get topped off every 500 mi. I'm going to do this, bring it in, and see how close I got! I'm all going to watch the tech as close as he'll let me. I really want to be able to do this myself.
so i think i might have added a lil' too much oil while topping off my 2007 Mini. It is a few threads above the top/max ball on the dipstick. It's maybe a 1/2 qt over. Is that too much over? Do I need to drain/ change oil to get it right? or will it burn off? I do burn thru a bit.
I just moved to Naples FL and I have a 2012 MINI coop clubman and every time I drive it it seems to be burning through the radiator fluid faster than I've ever seen I'm putting radiator fluid and it almost every time I'm driving it any suggestions on how I could fix this?
I just changed my oil and filter on my Mini Cooper Clubman S. Its supposed to have 4.2 quarts right? That does not make the oil go to that point. At that full my car runs like crap...
If you overfill your MINI, it can cause engine damage. Just check the oil dipstick, don't add more than needed! My MINI doesn't burn much oil at all and I think I've only needed to add a couple of times between annual oil changes.
@@linsierra1749 Yeah in a normal car yes but some of the Audi vehicles burn up to 2 qts in between oil changes and since I heard mini does I assumed the same. After owning now for more than a year my 3,000 mile oil changes tend to make me feel safer than dumping extra oil causing frothing yuck!
Being a single Mom with limited Funds FI own a 2006 Mini Cooper 2 Dr Hatch Until you are able to fix your transmission is it Ok... to use Lucas Transmission fix? And where do you put the Transmission Fix? There is no dipstick to check the level (And No...LMAO .. I'm Not A Dipstick )
Hey man do u notice the oil on the actual rod like way above the max fill? I know it’s not over filled because last oil change was done by the dealership
dealership or not, people make mistakes (hard to believe, i know) if i were you i would drive back and ask them to double check it for you.....and i would ask them to demonstrate how to read that POS dipstick! worst design EVER!
Good Day I have a funny noise on my mini, the noise more sound like a valve ping only while driving on low speed but when I give more on the accelerator the noise disappear Kinda puzzle wondering if it needs the change the timing chain or just needs an oil change Need Help Please
Hi there can you tell me why my jcw mini has a film of oil in the expansion bottle please there is no signs of water in the oil filler neck many thanks kc
Hi there, we just bought a 2011 mini cooper and upon checking oil level, the dipstick looked dry. Another 1000miles and we will be ready to change oil, but if I wanted to add some, how much would you suggest?
For anyone reading this down the line. Check the oil level like how he explains in the video. That will tell you how much to add if any. The stick is difficult to read but he explains how. Top and bottom sides of the stick tend to get rubbed dry or wet with oil when pulling the stick out so check the left and right sides until it's an even oil reading all the way around the stick.
I need a Transmission fluid change. I checked your website & you are 6 hrs. away from me...12 hrs roundtrip About how long does this work take? I'll give you a call soon.
Is there an aftermarket dipstick available for these?. I'm old as dirt and even with reading glasses on I can't see anything when the oil is clean. In my opinion this is just as bad as removing the dipstick all together. wait.... BMW actually did that.
This is guy is crazy. Both statements are wrong. The coolant level is shown on the tank and it is not at the seam. The engine oil level should never be maxed out on the dipstick. It should be in the middle. Don't listen this man he literally has no idea what he is talking about. Also it is not normal for these engines burn 1 quart every 1000 miles so that's a bs claim as well. If that is the case you need a repair.
cars aren't dumb.....people are dumb.......cars are just cars LOL every car has positive and negatives and personally i LOVE my MINI COOPER and think it's crazy FUN to drive. yes you have to educate yourself especially because it's a german car (vs american) but yeah, do a lil homework, and it can be a great car to own. cheers.
