Sarah Beeny goes back to see how Martin Sutherland is coping after he was so convinced he'd found the formula for making money out of developing in Earls Court.
It makes me wonder how the Program advertises for participants. "Useless Know it All Twats required for TV show Only people with huge egos, no ideas and no financial sense need apply"
Craig and Tina bought the art deco house in Nov 2004 for £225,000 and sold it in Sep 2011 for £340,000; they lost money despite the amount of time they lived in the property. They even added a conservatory to the back of the house.
Minor detail you missed, the 2007 market crash, the worst I've seen in my lifetime. The knock on affect of that is still felt. Just ask me. I lost a LOT of money. They probably did well to break even
I really dont understand why you wouldn't listen to what she has to say when she's telling you that you're doing the wrong thing. And people spend like its no tomorrow what in the world.
the show is rigged. she comes later on and the developers have often started and are working / sometimes the dev is already finished. its tv...viewing matters
I love art deco!!! I hope they keep the original charm and style of the home 🤞curious to see how this episode unfolds EDIT: the art deco house turned out beautifully but Tina is insufferable and irresponsible. That square toilet is absolutely hideous and Tina has no business handling budgets.
How they go so far over budget defies belief. A lot of them are not very smart. Looking at a huge loss through over capitalising, over spending like there is no tomorrow and just putting into the house what they wanted rather than what prospective purchasers want. Then there is their expectation of what they will get for it. First thing speak to an agent then buy appropriately in a half decent area then redevelop to what people want.
I honestly hope the original bathroom in that Deco place was too far gone to be restored because it's a crime that they tore it out. 'we want to do it Art Deco' but most people's idea of Deco isn't Deco - it's more 'contemporary square'.
I Love This show! The people that buy these homes almost never have any experience, but they always think they know what is the best thing to do to sell the house... LOL!
Renee. So true. People have come up with an idea and they are so attached to it that they cannot make smart COMMON SENSE decisions. It's like they need to get it their way. Not smart business attitude.
Have y ou noticed that these programmes never contain any out and out failures? Everyone seems to make money. The fact is that as a property investor myself, I see countless failures around me all the time, including examples of inexperienced developers losing huge sums of money and sometimes being ruined. Developing single properties like this will not make you money beyond what you might gain simply because the market's rising. Just holding the asset will bag you 10% in a good year. The rest is at best a waste of time and could lead to your ruin.
Having to move in after putting development costs on a credit card isn’t a “win” in my book. They will be paying a mortgage plus massive credit card bills with accrued interest as it was 0% for seven months. And he has to live in it with her!
You clearly didn’t finish the episode, the Art Deco couple made a massive loss which forced them to move in till the market picks up paying a very high mortgage, which could keep them there for some years.
”I think we would be daft ignoring advice like that from someone who clearly knows what they’re doing”. Exactly! If only more of the ppl on these shows would reason like that
GBP 17000 to restore 17 windows. I'm setting up a bizness tmrw restoring windows !!! Here, the 17 windows would cost GBP 4000 maximum to restore whereas it probably only cost these builders 4000 to make new ones and sell them on for a hefty 17000.
I have worked with glass and metal and have contacts that can do it for me also. Believe me, 4000 quid is the COST, the rest is profit - and at 17'000 quid its a rip off, it should be nearer 7000 to 8000 and thats still expensive with a 100% profit margin ! Dismantling them 3 days work - hand cleaning/preparing them for sandblasting and paint 1 days work - sandblasting and paint 1 days work - inserting the glass 2 days work - putting windows back into the house 2 days work. Lets say 2 weeks work to leave some time for the proverbial tea breaks. Thats 10 days work. The rest is divided up between: Sandblasting, putty & paint. That does not add upto 17'000.- quid my friend. How much does the average worker make per day ? double that for the company x 10and thats your labour costs. That leaves you with installing the glass and puttying and some paint to make up for the rest + profit margin. Do the sum backwards and determine the gross profit margin. 17'000 quid total is a rip-off. PS: I spelt bizness wrong on purpose by the way.
I'm not a fan of Art Deco but think that the style should be honored. Amazing to me that other houses on the road were allowed to be changed in style from their Art Deco origins (pitched roofs put on etc.). Does that period not have protected (listed) status in the UK?
The Art Deco House: something is seriously wrong with your thinking when someone tells you to cut your spending and you ignore them. I guess it's easy to spend someone else's money. You are not designing YOUR dream house. You are designing a house for others. Things should be neutral to appeal to more buyers. People squander opportunities. Where has intelligence gone?
2:26, WOA!!!!! That’s the absolute worst hair. She just needs it cut in that unflattering long-pointy-on-the-sides-short-up-the-back to complete the whole sad look.
I still loved the way the Art Deco house turned out. I loved the fireplace - even the square toilet. They did a great job on all the details. Who cares if they took a big loss!
I like Sarah a lot. She's a very nice, tactful woman. I do think that she could use some help with her hair and clothes, though. But it's what inside that counts, isn't it?
That house was hardly art deco. Just a few hints with a couple of mirrors and a crap fireplace does not an art deco house make. What a disaster on every level.
The art deco one was painful, the guy having to sell his car so his stupid wife can spend a fortune on unnecessary things for a house they weren't even going to live in.... Jesus.
I'm in control .. I mean we are in control. Why do women act singular but speak plural. Tina just wants to buy pretty things and not focus on the big shit.
These programmes are highly irresponsible. Is this presenter, for example, a professional property investor herself? On what basis is she liberally dishing out advice to these people? It's their money, and it's a lot of money, so she should just keep quiet unless she really knows what she's talking about. Why not get some professionals involved? I find her getting on my nerves pretty much every time she opens her mouth. Then there's the pouting, the false soft voice and generally, the post-childbirth eroticism that she tries to portray - it's all so silly, all the whilst telling people who are putting their money where their mouths are how to spend their money. What does she know? Nothing. Mind you, I've never so many schmucks as you get on this programme.
Everyone who has already replied is right about her experience, etc. I just wondered why no one had commented on Luke Dawson's weird & creepy comments about Sarah herself? 'the post-childbirth eroticism that she tries to portray.' Luke - that is entirely your silly & gross hangup. Sarah is a professional acting professionally (and she seems to try to do it with kindness as well). Would you ever comment like that if it were about a male presenter? You clearly have an issue with women. Work on that.
