Budgies are easy to tame... if you know what you're doing. But for the majority of people, they really aren't easy to tame because they're so flighty- the only reason they would be easier than other birds is because their bite doesn't hurt so it's easier to ignore what they want and push past their boundaries (which is NOT a good thing)
@Jma691

Ya I used to have one but we found it outside and it was very hot so we brought it in and a month later she died but I’m getting a different kind of bird

Bite of the budgie CAN hurt!!! Yes it can !!! If you scare the bird deeply enough, it will bite hard to save its life! A pink mark will be left. Don’t get your nose too close to a curious budgie!

@@annalisa14 Ahh yes their bite CAN hurt but I find most of the time it doesn't (I haven't been bitten many times though haha but hens definitely have a sharper bite), but most of the time bites don't hurt and people just ignore them

It depends if you get a untamed flighted adult, they aren't hard to tame , but it takes a while. If you get a young one , you can have them tame in two weeks. My two came from a neglectful home and I have had them for a year they are just now getting comfortable out of the cage

Thank you for mentioning how loud a Moustache Parakeet can get! It really IS ear piercing and can get very annoying. Lol. I did a lot of research before I got one, (However mine is a Moustache Derbyan Hybrid) and a lot of people said they weren't very loud and could be considered an apartment parrot. It was pretty misleading, so when I got my boy it was a huge shock. It took a while to get used to, but he's so worth it. He's such a sweet bird, and he didn't go through much of a bluffing phase in my experience. They really are such amazing pets! If you can handle a moustache parakeet, you're in for a treat hahaha

I enjoyed this video very much. I would like to add, as someone who has birds in an apartment, that people often talk about “Good apartment birds,” but rarely talk about if apartments are good for birds. It’s very difficult to have a bird in an apartment. You can’t entirely control the environment, like if other people in your building cook with non-stick pans, spray toxic substances in the vacinity, and make loud noises all night. Like playing a loud booming vibrating bass speaking that vibrates against your floor and walls all night. Or heavy walking over your ceiling for hours, and dropping things, if you’re not on the top floor. We even had someone install a bird deterrent (and lie about it) high pitched noises to irritate the birds, so we had to move out of that building. There are crazy people and loud obnoxious people, and rude people in apartment buildings sometimes. So I just think, if I had to live my life over again, I would wait until I could buy a house before I would get birds. Every single day I feel terrified that my apartment manager, or my city, is gonna varnish right near my bird room without telling me, and poison my sweet babies. I have every single air purifier and soundproofing device I could afford to buy, but I’m a nervous wreck trying to make sure my birds are safe in this stupid apartment. Would not recommend having birds in an apartment, ever

How is cooking on a non stick pan going to hurt your neighbors bird
@Meowface.
@Meowface. 2 года назад
@@jjim sounds like an old wives tale to me If there’s toxic fumes it would mean it’s in the food you’re eating You’d have to have the non stick pan on extremely high heat with nothing in it to cook the coating and paint off it.. that would create some fumes At that point though you’re at risk of burning the building down if a neighbor is creating toxic fumes in an apartment building that’s killing small animals through the walls then you have serious problems besides the health of your pet bird!

I have a parrotlet and I have budgies, and while I was told by everyone that the parrotlet would be combative difficult, I have found that it’s actually the budgies that are aggressive. The parrotlet just wants to be left alone, while the budgies constantly get in his face and chase him around and want to eat whatever he’s eating, or be wherever he’s at, or even bop him on his beak. I have to separate them, and watch them closely when they’re out at the same time, but only because the budgies are so aggressive and stress the parrotlet out so much

Thank you for your contributions to aviculture. As a long time budgie owner, I have to differ with you on your statement that they’re always chattery. Mine have periods, sometimes quite long, when they are quiet and snoozy, much like other grass parakeets. Just like Bourke’s and Tourquosines, they are most active in the mornings and at twilight. There’s a reason budgies remain the most popular pet bird; they’re simply adorable.

I have a Bourke parakeet that I got when she was about 6 weeks old, also named Rosie. She loves to be out and sit on my shoulder, look at my phone (she's taken selfies of herself when looking at my phone), and will do recalls when I call out to her. If I am lying down, she flies down next to me to see what I am looking at, and has ever tried to look to see if I have anything in my shirt. I have pictures of her doing these things. She immediately jumps on my hand when I reach into her cage to change her water, feed dishes, etc. Since getting her, I have gotten 2 adult Bourkes (both females) from a breeder. One will step up on a perch to move her from one place to another, the other is too skittish. I assumed that it was because they were not handled much as babies. Until watching your Bourke video, I guess I never realized how lucky I am with my Rosie's unique personality! She will be a year old in a few weeks.
@Quetzaluki
@Quetzaluki 2 года назад
I certainly hope this doesn't happen to you after hearing about your experience with Rosie, but I found that my female Bourke changed personality after she got older. She was the most friendly baby but stopped stepping up for some unknown reason and now is nervous around my hands. All my boys are social and step up (well most of the time; they are usually more interested in hopping on me than a true step up). My girl Sasha is a lot more standoffish now and prefers to spend most of her time keeping to herself, but she still has her sweet moments when she wants to. I hope your Rosie stays just the same!

I had a rare "Dr. Dolittle" experience with a Senegal who had a sign on his cage that said "I BITE! Keep your fingers away". He took a liking to me for some reason, and one day when changing the water bowl in his cage (I worked at the parrot shop on weekends for $5 an hour for fun) noticed he was trying to get my attention by leaning out of the cage door. Short to the long: He loved to "cuddle". Would let himself be flipped upside down to lay in my palm and stretch his neck out for scratches. Gumby sure was an ambassador for his species. But, generally speaking, your assessment of the Senegal is probably more as opposed to less accurate. I just have good memories of Gumby. His original owners had him up for consignment sale at the parrot shop because "he was a biter", and his owners couldn't do anything with him. After he let his guard down with me, he'd come out of that cage to almost anyone. His owners came in once to see how he was doing and freaked out that he could be handled. Weirdly, they still didn't take him back. But he was bought be someone who took him to a good home. Thanks for the video.

If you think adopting or raising a sparrow, best chances are to raise one by hand, if they bond with you, you will have an awesome friend(at least males). They're friendly most of the time they don't really like being pet or handled, they come near you(really close and remembers you) if they trust you, you can hand feed them, they're quite temperamental and will show you what they like or dislike, they have empathy towards you and will give you the attention you need when you're really needing it. They have some kind of sense of rythm, they like music and will sing, they're chirps are not that loud and most of the time they will chirp only if you have interaction with it (something like talking but everyone with their language). They like high places and hate bird cages. They're something like a finch but with a different sound. Even food is similar. If you really bond with your sparrow, it's gonna be an awesome journey I miss you buddy...

I have a rock pebbler parrot which you do not feature but I guess the comments you make about the Barraband would apply. My Pebbles is not too noisy and calls to me with a ring tone or "C'mon birdie" . He knows a few phrases. Fortunately, I have a large apartment with high ceilings so he gets to fly around a lot. As I write he is sitting on top of the kitchen cabinet door sunning himself under the lights. He is affectionate, follows me everywhere but does not like to be touched. I would definitely recommend this parakeet as they have beautiful plumage, are not noisy, dusty or nervous.

Heres an addition to the species list: The gouldian finch. (sorry it's very long) Cons: They get very easily scared and tend to fly in a panic, hands off birds, timid, even when hand raised they don't like cuddling (this finch species doesn't groom each other, they don't cuddle or have much body contact compared to other finches), they have very strong breeding instincts and will use whatever they find as nesting material, they need a very big cage or aviary, the females tend to get egg bound because of their distinct breeding instinct, they can get bullied or scared of other birds (even zebra finches can be too aggressive for them), If you don't want to breed you should separate the sexes, the females don't sing at all and can get feisty during mating season, depending on the colour mutation they can be pretty "cheap" or quite expensive, Never get only one bird, even a pair can get quite lonely and depressed (a group of six or eight gouldian finches is recommended), getting them to eat any greens can be quite hard, they need to be kept in warm places and can't handle the cold, and most importantly: They are extremely sensitive and get very easily sick: They are very prone to air-sac mites and liver disease, vitamin deficiencies can easily lead to their deaths (too much vitamin A -> liver failure, not enough -> eye and breathing sicknesses, growth disorders), A daily intake of vitamin B (mostly found in different type of millets) is vital or they can get cramps and the well known symptom of "head turning". If that occurs it's often too late and they will lose their orientation, turn their heads uncontrollable in unnatural ways, fall to the ground and die there. It cannot be cured, only stopped if diagnosed very quickly. Because of their breeding instincts you have to look for an ethical breeder or you might get one with undesireable genetics (e.g. the blue mutation often dies earlier or has a bad immune system if both parents were "pure" blue mutations) Diet: Even though their diet in itself is simple, you have to be extremely attentive about it, it can't be rich, you can't give them the same amount of veggies as other birds but they still need a lot of vitamins which will have to be given in the form of less but suitable veggies, seeds and herbs (or vitamin supplements), if at all you should only rarely give them very little amounts of fruits, you have to know the nutrients of every seed to get them a good mix (very few oily seeds, a decent amount of canary seeds, e.g. plata millet contains vitamin B1, B2 and B6 and isn't oily; Sesame seed is oily but contains a lot of minerals, magnesium, calcium etc), while molting they need more silver millet, chickweed or cucumber which contains the needed silica, gouldian finches usually will get fed different mixtures depending on their yearly cycle (mating season and beginning of year more rich food, while more sparse mixtures in winter, but that can be taken more lightly if you only have males) -> you really have to do your research. Pros: Very colorful and available in a lot of different colour mutations, they are very friendly and rarely fight at all, the males sing beautiful and pleasant melodies, potential apartment birds if the necessary space is available, they don't bite, the males usually don't fight each other if they have enough space - if you don't want to breed you can keep birds of the same sex without problems, they are very curious and will listen to you talking, watch you etc., their dietary needs are easy to fulfill if you did your research, they don't chew on or destroy things, If they don't sing atm they are very quiet, Contrary to other finches they are very clean and not messy, while parakeets lose a lot of feathers gouldian finches only lose them while molting, they love bathing which is absolutely adorable to watch, they follow a strict day and night cycle which means you will have a quiet night, even though they usually don't like physical contact they will often form a bond of trust with you and eat out of your hand, If other bird species are kept together with them the aggression will most likely never stem from the gouldians, you just have to give them enough space to "escape" the crazy active birds, they don't need to be entertained like budgies or cockatiels, they occupy themselve by singing to each other or showing off their mating dance (Which is very entertaining because they all do it a little bit different and the young males train their skills by showing it to their male friends, the males also like to sing for you especially if you encourage them and give them attention whenever they do so, they really love to be in the spotlight) finally: If you like bird watching you will love them.

I would love to get another budgie, the first one I got was from a lady who brought baby budgies into her house, instead of leaving the outside. The budgie I bought was so tame, but we kept him in cage in our front room, spoke to him everyday, and put our hand in each day. After a week we let him out, he flew up our stairs, but landed on top landing and hopped onto my finger. He was such a great sociable budgie named bb, kids loved him, they would always come round and first thing they asked can we have bb out. Sadly he died seven yrs ago, and I still miss him. I did but other budgies but they never fully trained and got very nasty, so I had to re home.

That’s so cool! I have a parrotlet who only poops certain places. He flies to his play gym to poop, screaming the entire way to let everyone know “I have to poop!” Then does his little cute tail feather shake, squat, and poop. Then screams, and flies back to wherever he was. It took me a minute to figure out why he was screaming, but once I realized it was his poop announcement it stopped bothering me as much lol Not sure where he learned it either, just something he decided to do on his own. I sure wish my other birds would pick up on this habit

My bourke will demand attention 100% of the time, wants to be held 24/7, follows me everywhere i go, absolutely loves to play with his toys and has to steal my food. He is also not shy at all, he loves meeting new people and wants to be the center of attention whenever people are over. I have a mustache parakeet and is waiting for a cockatiel. Every con you said about it is so true. Mine get angry at all her toys so we have to take most out, if she gets angry she can bite pretty darn well, when we give her snacks, she chew them down in a day. She only likes females and likes me most. And she screams a lot and is very loud. The only thing that’s not true is the bluffing stage. When she was young, she likes to sing and dance and count sit on you. Now that she’s old, she doesn’t sing much, likes to dance less, and can’t get her out of the cage and only tried to get out once recently.

I love your videos and your darling family. I just got my parakeet from a chain pet store I've had him four days now. He's coming along fine as far as taming and eating from your recommendation for diet also playing but.. he smells just awful from the beginning I think it's what a filthy cage might of smell like. Everything for him in his home is new and absolutely no poop I'm ocd about his cleanliness. I've provided several baths in different locations also bought a bath for the side of his cage today while at the pet store asking why my handsome boy smells so bad and if something is wrong and what to. I love him so.

Just something to add to the kakariki, mine was taught to say her name and she kind of figured out "hurry" too! Outside the cage, prepare to chase that bird all over your house tho as once they're out they don't necessarily wanna go back in haha! And they can get into all kinds of mischief. I call them the troublemakers of the small parrots because they like to get into EVERYTHING, or at least mine did

I got a male parakeet in January and and English budgie in April. They are now tame and get along great. A few weeks ago a yellow budgie flew into my neighbor's garage and we tried to find the owner but no luck so I put him in with my 2 birds. They are fine with him but mostly interact with one another and I wonder is this newcomer feeling left out? Should I get another budgie to be a partner for him? Is it best to keep budgies in pairs?

Have a question about canaries, I bought two in sept. A male and female. The female was a gloster and got sick and passed away in February. I think is was pasty butt or wettail. Went downhill , then passed. My male has since ceased singing. He peeps, but has not sung since his companion passed. I believe he was truly grieving. I got a second canary from my sister, (she raised). They get along but my male is still not singing. Any thoughts ? I appreciate and help.

Wow, you have 16 species of birds; you have wonderful birds. You are right on in explaining that we, as pet owners, no longer do things like buy a pet bird, place it in a little cage, and feed it just seeds I am proud that I brought home 4 budgies from a humane center and have provided them with a great home. Although I am back to working outside again, when I am home, I enjoy the time I get to spend with them. Been following your RU-vid videos, facebook, and instagram posts since 2018, and you've taught me a lot; my birds have been doing great. I have a couple of the birds mentioned. My heart bird is the Kakariki. I got one and he is such a dear. He comes and hangs on my head or near me. But of course no touching. He lost his bottom beak in a scary door incident. As he is naturally nosy. So he and his flight crew get normal seed and i coffee blend up a chunk for him. But he has learnt to use his tongue and top beak. But what a scabbers. He will literally reach threw and rummage through all the crud on the bottom of the cage. Lucky he loves to bath. He sounds like R2D2 :). I have two rainbow Lorikeets... On the quiet if i was to realize how loud they are i would not have gotten them. Its still resting in the back of my mind that one day i might need to re home them. But they are both still under 2 and I am working on keeping them Quieter. But they will do the average hearing persons head in. I also have two Turks. The red breasted type. Honestly would recommend them and the Kakariki to anyone. They really are so quiet they look like silent Rainbow lorikeets ;) lol. I have the Kakariki, his two wing men (Budgies), Pineapple Conure, 2 Turks in one cage but they all hang together when let out. I just have to watch the Lorikeets with them as they will bully the Turks. The Turks don't have the flight agility nor the stage presence of the other birds to defend against the Thug Patrol.

@Areyousayingidontknowmyname
@@tina6344 Hi. Not hard work but she is does have a loving mean spirit. Will hold my finger and then that switch happens.. Chomp. But not super hard. I think its a hand raised bird thing. They seem to be more prone to biting. So yes smart. Moody. Lurches around the cage. Likes to bop up and down. Not overly noisy. She will call out to me when i leave the room or lay down out of sight ;). Because that makes her panic a bit. I would suggest do it.

@Areyousayingidontknowmyname
@@kathcarsonskenny8433 Yes mine will hang out with me. Loves watching clips with other birds in them. He is a wonderful bird. Would i suggest you get one as a second bird just for hanging out with..... Absolutely. I would be lost without my Cozy. Sometimes birds like my Conure can be too much or you can feel bad for not giving them all the attention. Nice having one that comes to you just to hang out. Like a cat. He is like a chicken Cat.. :) . When he flys around with his Budgie flight crew its a sight to see. The way he pushes them away with his foot when they get too much for him is adorable. So long story short lol. It depends on what you are looking for. A Bird you can hang out with all day. Or just hang with that will be independent.
