Some of the pros and cons of coming to UCSB :) Music : • "Cruisin" - Smooth Gui... • Video • Kanye West - 80 Degree... as well as a section of the lofi beats livestream.
I am a prospective parent - This is hands down the best student-led pros and cons video on a college I have seen yet - thank you Daniel - for making this awesome and informative video for prospective families!
Hi Beth, my daughter is in her second year at UCSB. As a heads up, the housing crisis is real. Do not count on the "guaranteed" 2nd year of housing if your child decides to attend UCSB. My daughter and her friends do not know anyone that was offered a second year in off-campus housing for the academic year 2022-2023.
if you really want to go to ucsb but don’t get accepted, you can always enroll in sbcc (Santa Barbara city college) and then enroll to ucsb through the transfer program. it takes about 2 years to complete the courses/program at sbcc before you can start the transfer process.
If a student work hard just to take classes for college admission. I would not go to cc and transfer. CC is just high school diploma that anyone can apply.
@@yya6264 I regret not doing the transfer program through SBCC. You can knock out all your GE's at SBCC for the first two years and then you're guaranteed acceptance to a UC where you'll get your degree two years later. The same degree for half the price and the classes are just as good at SBCC. When I was at UCSB many of my professors also lectured at CC, classes are nearly identical.
I was a student at ucsb for 10 years (got my phd) back in 95. I live in la mesa and rented a room for $200. Back then the people that owned the house didn’t know what rents were going for. It was sweet.
I personally lived in San Miguel on campus and the communal restrooms were not that bad! Almost always an open shower and an open stall, and it gets cleaned every day! And I was in between 2 of the dining halls. I actually enjoyed where I lived (besides my antisocial floor!) I have only been at UCSB one year so far but I love to answer questions too!!
extremely helpful video. thanks sm!! I’m a computer science major as a senior in high school from Texas and I’m hoping i can attend here cuz the weather is REALLY important to me, plus it just looks/seems real nice here overall
omg, I cannot believe how much has changed! I'm an UCSB alum. Many years ago, now, but still a gaucho! Just a few of the things that changed: When I went there there wasn't enough housing and like half of the freshmen lived in IV in privately owned dorms (I did). It rained a whole heck of a lot in winter, and IV would regularly flood. It was so fun to get out in it and we canoed the streets of IV! The UCEN was a dead zone. The basketball team was the big draw, not soccer. Ultimate was huuuuge. And it looks like they "officially" changed the name of FT from Francisco Torres to...whatever that name was. And it looks like the theater in IV was bought by UCSB? It burned down when I was at school, and sat there a black wreckage for the rest of the time I was there - the school buying it was probably the best thing that could have happened! I'm glad things are still great, there!
i don't know if i still count as a freshman after this year... into my second quarter of online school at ucsb and really looking forward to having class on campus. You're really chill which made me love ucsb more.
Great video! My son is finalizing his decision and we were looking for a current review of everything. I graduated in 1990 and loved living at FT, biking to campus was very quick and easy.
Great overview! I attended UCSB from 1992-1996 and graduated with a BA in English/Creative Writing. I lived in FT (Francisco Torres) my freshman year and in IV thereafter at 6575 Segovia (which was then the dearly departed Theta Chi chapter house). Go Gauchos, Olé! 🌮
It's interesting that after 30 years, so little has changed in terms of pros and cons. However, one thing that has changed (for the better) are more POC students at UCSB. 30 years ago, I was a fish out of water as one of the few Latinos there. My son is sitting on the fence choosing between colleges. I'll shoot this video to him. GO GAUCHOS!
class of 2005 here. Oh, how I missed the good old days. One of the best times I've ever had was attending basketball and volleyball games at Thunderdome. A lot of fans come out, especially Gaucho Locos (I still have those yellow shirts.) One thing that's never changed about UCSB is how out of control parties are in IV on weekends and how expensive it is to live there. Never understood why kids want to live on DP and pay $4K+ a month in rent. My friends and I always hung out at Java Jones sipping coffee we can barely afford and Mexican restaurant called FreeBirds. I dunno if it's still there. So many unforgettable experiences! Living in the dorms was one of them. Freshman year I lived at Francisco Torres, which was a privately own building off campus on El Colegio Rd now owned by UCSB. We used to call it "FT" or "Fuck Towers." The most heartbreaking event during my time at UCSB was David Abbott, I believe that's his name. A guy who plowed through a crowd of college students who were out partying in IV on that horrible weekend. Through good times and bad, UCSB is definitely a great place to learn and grow. Your experience is what you make of it. Cherish every moment. I miss it a lot!!
Thanks, Daniel! I chose to continue my studies at the UCSB and heard from my advisor and lab-mates that it's a gorgeous campus! I wanted to hear pieces of stuff from a new person as well! I'm glad you shared your opinion. Also, that biking thing, does it cost anything?
Congrats! I'd recommend looking into both university's major departments to help make your decision, but I love UCSB so much I'll just recommend you choose SB hehe
try finding the video on the application posted on the ucsb youtube channel from like 2019. It goes into depth and might answer some questions you have about it!
Hey! So Im only a freshman but my dream college is UCSB. Since your in, I was hoping you could help me understand target subjects or topics (grades, sports etc.) that UCSB focuses on when looking at students to assign. And what about language? If your fluent in less common languages does UCSB value that?
Loved the video! Thanks so much:)! I recently got accepted and was also thinking about double majoring in film and philosophy. I was wondering if you find your workload for both majors to be difficult or if it's manageable? Thanks again!
Hey! Thank you for your video on UCSB! I'd like to apply for Film Studies. Could you please tell me how hard it is to get into the Film Studies program, whether it's for a master's or a PhD? Thanks!
Thank you for this! I'm not from the USA but UCSB is my dream school but the fact that is very expensive (and they don't give scholarships to international students) makes me kinda sad since i don't come from a family that has lots of money :(
Aw that's tough :( I hope you can find some scholarship that can help you out! Depending on what you're going in for, I bet you can find a lot of scholarships that would apply to you. I know that you can go to internationalscholarships.com to try to find one, but I also know that applying and receiving scholarships are very different things. Either way, good luck!
hi! this was super helpful, thank you so much for making this! I'm about to be a senior so I'm putting together my list of schools. UCSB is probably my #1 right now, but I live very far away (Chicago!) and I also am not sure of what I want to major in yet. I also know that UCSB is pretty well known as a party school, and I wanted to ask if I'd still fit in and be able to make friends if I don't plan on partying ALL the time. So I was just wondering if you think UCSB would be a good school even if I end up going undecided and how it feels socially. Thank you so much; this was insanely helpful!!
Don't worry, the party culture isn't all-encompassing LOL. It's an option if you want to party but there are still so many other things to do for fun :)
@@majacatalinaschaathun6954 I'm in the process of applying to colleges right now, so I haven't decided where I'm going yet. But I have decided to major in psychology!
Glad I was helpful! The FAMST department here is pretty good in my opinion. All faculty are deeply invested in their lines of work and the Pollock Theater (where most of your classes are gonna be held) is a venue for a lot of talks and discussions with TV and film writers, directors, etc. It's also very easy to get involved: my first quarter I got the chance to work on a documentary and I was really surprised with how quickly I could get myself involved in something film related on campus
You have the option to choose your top 3 residence halls and the type of room you want to live in. It can be a single, double, or a triple. With all that is going on this year, they’re most likely going to narrow down rooms to at least a double if not a single. Keep in mind that a triple is the least expensive option and single is the most expensive.
Do you have any insight on how life is for a graduate student? Never been to SB and am nervous about the living situation and culture at the school. Any info would be appreciated :)
I honestly wish I could tell you more :(( but I know that the grad students have a good network at the school. I feel like UCSB is a lot more oriented towards undergrads, but I wouldn't really know. I'd recommend asking in the subreddit! r/UCSantaBarbara
Sorry that this is late, but most grad students I knew lived in Goleta or near Santa Barbara, since it is a little more peaceful and cheaper! You can also apply for family housing, which is very affordable and convenient housing (if you have a close friend, partner, or family member). In terms of social life, I guess it depends on the department because you will have many opportunities (seminars, classes, retreats, TAing) to get to know other grad students and hang out with them! In addition to this, I know some grad students will become involved with sports, clubs, and even rec-cen classes.
The reputation seems to always stick around, but I honestly think students are partying less nowadays. It could be a response to new health regulations or just a general turn away from partying
I was a transfer and I recommend it! UCSB is one of the few UCs that actually has a transfer Center and staff dedicated to helping transfers. You even have access to counselors for advising, and sometimes it's even quicker to go to them for advice than waiting for advising at Cheadle Hall. Overall, I'd recommend UCSB for transfers.
@@Jmnzx u need a 3.4 for UCSB and a 3.2 for UCSC, UCD, UCI, UCR, and UCM. I don't qualify for any aid cuz my dad makes too much money, but I have won some scholarships totalling $3300 over the last 1.5 years
Quite informative although one suggestion is it would have been great if you could walk around campus instead of just your room to give us a better idea of the school
I don't know a lot about the stats for out-of-state students, but I personally know a lot of people who are from other states. I wouldn't get my hopes down!
I didn't go as in-depth with commuter parking just because there aren't a lot of people who commute, but I know that there's parking passes for commuters that cost less. You can't park in residence hall parking (duh) but I think you park near a bus loop if I'm not mistaken. You can go to UCSB's TPS website (transportation and parking services) to see what other passes they have. If you can take the bus, do that instead!
Halo Francisco, congratulations on the acceptance. Mind giving me some of your time? I need to talk to you about your course. Kindly reply to this. Thank you in advance
Just know that which apartments you choose to live at will or will not have a parking spot in that area. San Joaquin and I think Sierra Madre do not have parking and you have to walk less than a mile to the parking structures near the soccer fields. Santa Ynez does have parking spots.
$500 I think UCM is $400. I lived closed by so I dropped my daughter off each morning. She take their university bus home which has a stop right by the house.
You can't live in the dorms on campus BUT they have campus apartments, most are on the side where FT/San Catalina is at. I lived in the undergrad apartments called San Joaquin right next to FT, so now only do freshmen live there but also transfers/juniors/seniors do as well. Transfers are guaranteed 2 years of living in the apartments if you choose to do so, and I highly recommend it, you get to meet a lot of people from various ages and backgrounds rather than living in IV and kinda having only a certain amount in that house you're living at.
Honestly, when I recorded this I wasn't really thinking that far ahead LOL. The reality is that Fall2020 is gonna be extremely different. Class will still be in session, but we don't know whether or not we're gonna have physical class yet. It's honestly a topic that I should elaborate into another video
Halo Melinda. We can discuss about online schooling further if you like. I have gone through an online class before. I am currently a trained tutor and I would advice you accordingly. Kindly reach out (noelwalucho689@gmail.com).
As a mom I do not like online or DL for my kids during this pandemic. Traditional is the way to go. I do have a daughter graduating UCM April/May. At least it was her last year and just taking those few last minute classes to graduated. If she was 1st year no no no on online....
It's definitely pretty expensive to live here. I live in IV with four other guys to cut the costs of rent. Honestly, if you think the program you're going into at UCR is good too, I'd stick with UCR
Biking is still the best option to get around campus, but walking is an option. The only thing with walking is that you have to yield to cyclists. I have a friend who re-learned to bike, and it will come in handy if you can pick up that skill again! :)
I don't see any cons bcs I'm russian. And our universities are like moldy old prisons with really poor education quality. My dream is to study there and surf every morning but cost is absolutely unaffordable 🥺
Don’t like the pros or cons be the reason why you don’t like it or like it. Remember you are going to college for yourself to get to the finished line. Don’t be distracted by anything else. It’s you not them or anyone.
In my experience, not really. It's a lot more important how you do in your later years. But the UC has recently removed the requirement of the SAT/ACT, so it might be a good idea to keep your grades high throughout high school for better chances of getting accepted to a UC.
Yeah, it can be intimidating, but I think the best way of trying to put it into perspective is that most high schools work on a quarter system with a bunch of classes (6-8) with some set difficulty. For UCSB, they recommend you take 12 units (roughly 3 classes) to start off with, so you get to gradually get used to the different pace. But of course that's all up to preference! I love the faster pace but it really does depend on the student. Hopefully this can ease that intimidation a bit haha
I'm in community college taking 19 units quarter system. As long as you give in the time, you'll be okay. My friend is taking 21, pushign 25 next quarter. On route to UC Berkeley.
:( hopefully you'll be able to see if you like Davis (even if we have class online)! sometimes it can feel discouraging when you make your decision and you can get cold feet, but a lot of times people end up at the right school and it just takes a little bit for them to realize. If, after some time, you know for sure that UCD isn't right for you, talk to academic advisors about transferring to a different school. good luck! you never know, UCD might just be the perfect place for you :)
UCM has a bus system too. So much better then walking from parking lot. My daughter is graduating and I dropped her off every morning the 1st two year. She take the bus home it stop by the house. Her 3rd year she was in study abroad program. This year or her last year 4th just online finishing up the fee classes she need to graduated.
