Thanks Jason. Been watching you for about 8 years now. As a homeowner that loves my yard you have never led me in the wrong direction. You are a strait shooter with no BS.

I live in Southern New Jersey and I'm on year 3 of a 5 year plan to change my tall fescue to zoysia and I'm loving it. It greens up in April, finished by May then goes dormant in November.

Thank you for the video. I’m in Texas and have a mixture of Bermuda and St Augustine; I’m going full St. Augustine. I find with St. Augustine, I have less weed and insect problems. I keep the height at 3-3.5 inches in the summer and mow 2-3 times per week to get the spread/thickness going. The active growth of St Augustine is great the hotter the temp gets. I also plug other area using a ProPlugger from my established lawn and this helps the spread tremendously.

Here in south Florida (St Aug grass) I add 1oz of Bifenthrin with my pre-emergent application tank. I do use more Fertilizer in the summer, 0.7-0.8 lb per month for 6 or 7 months (close to 5lb per year). That helps to spread and cover any thin spots. The main difficult weeds here, besides crabgrass, are dayflower, nutsedge and kalinga. I usually spot treat with a mix of Image (or Tenacity which is labeled for St Aug farms), Certainty and MSM. Thank you!! Your info is always helpful!!!

Is the bifenthrin just for insects?

Let the wars of the cool season and warm season lawn begin!😂. I love how zoysia lawns thicken up and feel on my feet. I have neglected my zoysia lawn in the early season but I started to fertilize and she is getting thick and crowding out the weeds. I just have to handle creeping Charlie in 2 weak areas with some 24D.

One additional benefit to centipede is that it is more tolerant of low pH soil. That can be important in certain parts of the country

Jim from Florida, been growing St.Augustine for 20 years. . Loves potassiium sulfate and micronutrients. Add bifenthrin to every application haha. Insects love it.

I agree about zoysia being the best! It can squeeze out other grasses!

Very informative. Here in southern part of nc, centipede is the most common on older lawns. Builders mostly use Bermuda because it is cheaper sod on the new homes. I have been landscaping for 40 years and centipede is my preferred grass. I use a pre-emergent on centipede lawns if they have had crabgrass problems but for most weed control, 2 apps of celsius does the job. We add some low nitrogen high iron fert and ger great results. Thanks for your knowledge

@mlee9049 once established it is the easiest to take care of, plus it will grow in light shade. Bermuda will not tolerate shade. I have seen Bermuda sod placed in the shade and within 5 years it is gone Plus I personally like the bright green color of centipede better

I am a little surprised you did not mention things like disease resistance, thatch accumulation and ability to tolerate high traffic. In the sandhills area of NC there is a fair amount of centepide as it does well in sandy soil with an acidic soil. Not my favorite but for many folks it is a fire and forget option. All in all a good overview though, thank you.

My zoysia grass in central IL grows great, I don't water, feed, thatch, or collect it's clippings. It has survived multiple droughts and a trenching out for a water line fix lots of clay waste soil and bobcat tracks with no effect. I'm mowing it once a week and that's too long. I could cut this stuff every 5 days.

I'm in NE Florida, almost all my lawns are St. Augustine, the chinch bugs are a nuisance but sod worms/army type worms seem to do the most damage, usually in previously heat stressed or excessively thirsty areas. A backyard with some oak trees can be swarming with moths and worms , hardly fertilized, no weed control and barely show damage all summer but a treated but overly sunny location that got too dry for too long in May can be wiped out in a few days in July or August from worms. The bugs seems unaffected by preventative granules but I've had luck with bifentrin or similar spray as soon as I see activity and just treat the areas around it even though labels usually say do the whole yard, but best method imo is preventive watering during the dry times and let the grass put up its best defense.
@TexasRivermedic

Agreed with the best defense. When needed I alternate Bifen IT and Lambda; Suspend SC is also great

St. Augustine does not attract bugs that I am aware of.... we have both bermuda and St. Augustine in our pastures (the Augustine is such a slow grower that we filled it with Bermuda until Augustine catches up .... (not in our lifetime), but my horses love both. I wish we had an easy way (other than roundup) to get rid of the Bahia grass. I hate, hubby hates it, and horses hate it. any suggestions are welcome. p.s. I just love your channel. I've been through a few grass sites, and yours is BY FAR the best. p.s. I am in Texas. :-)

Not sure about your insect comments with St Augustine. Had a St Augustine yard for roughly 12 years in the Houston area. And never had any insect problems. The occasional ant-bed popping up, but beyond that... nothing. I'm guessing it's a geographical issue. Though it was a super well established lawn. And thick as hell. The runner system was a heavily woven net under the grass blades that you had to pry apart to get to the dirt. It was always a deep forest green. And pretty much flew in the face of all the problems I hear about St Augustine. Especially considering we rarely watered it. Mostly only when us kids did summer water activities. Slip-n-Slide and what not. Never used fertilizers or insecticides on it. Pretty much all I did was mow it once a week at somewhere between 2 and 3 inches. The neighborhood did flood every 3 to 4 years. Especially during hurricanes. Which might have had something to do with it. Maybe it gave it a nutrient dump or something.

Hey Jason I live in middle Tennessee just north or Chattanooga. I have a new Bermuda lawn which was seeded in March and is thick and beautiful as usual. No shade in my yard and I e mowed it about 3 inches all year. My question is this is mid August and could I mow it lower at this point and put one more shot of nitrogen on it before the fall. How low would you say I could mow it right now? Thanks buddy.

Hey, Jason. Your lawn filled in quite nicely from those tossed sod squares! I've got a Zoysia lawn, and I have serious issues with dallisgrass. Aside from hand pulling or glyphosate spot treating, is there a product I can use on my lawn to help kill the dallisgrass? It's my biggest issue in my lawn.

What if you did a fescue under your trees? I know my tall fescue does well in summer under my maple. Gets maybe 4 hours of sun a day. I live 30 minutes north from baltimore.

I have Centipede grass in my yard here is South Alabama. One thing for sure it is NOT drought tolerant. It does NOT like city water. When we have rain it crawls like crazy and greens up nice. Centipede needs 1" of rain a week to look good. I cut my lawn at 3" and I know that's not recommended, but my yard looks better than anyone's on the block. My biggest problem is dealing with Mole Crickets and Grubs. When your neighbors don't care about their lawn, guess who's yard the insects are coming to? I use Fipronil and Merit/Dylox 6.2 to control the insects. Another problem is trying to keep Bahia grass out of my lawn. I've found no chemical to kill it, so I dig it out.
