For all of the Tasmanians who don’t know what the word “diagonal” means, it’s not the same as perpendicular. A trip from Devonport to Hobart is not diagonal, it’s predominantly perpendicular. A diagonal car trip would be from Cape Grim to Port Arthur and that trip takes more than 6 hours. I know it’s a difficult concept, but I have faith you can figure it out.
For all the non-Tasmanians who don't know what perpendicular means, you cannot have one "line" that is perpendicular, it has to be in reference to another "line".
When I was in Tasmania for sapphire prospecting it was cheap except for fuel and meat. I hope acreage is still cheap enough to get around St.Helens because I think I will start a good number of businesses in that area which would help with the unemployment rate there.
I recently moved from NYC to southern Tasmania. Bought a few hundred acres, built a home and have become a complete recluse. If I had my way I would let the road grow over so the only way in is by helicopter. The ocean view and the wilderness is simply stunning. I will never leave short of a box. Yes, the people are a bit special, but for me, in a nice way.
All I can say as a Tasmanian who has lived all over Australia in cities, regional towns, farms, bush and the outback - life is what you make it wherever you are. All places have good and bad but its up to us how we adapt/survive/thrive in new places. Some people are also just naturally more adaptable. My husband is more adaptable than me. I'm introverted so it often takes me a bit longer to settle in places. He is outgoing, helpful, community minded etc. So he settled no worries into Tassie (he's from country NSW), always helping out neighbours, elderly people etc. In response, they welcome him into their lives. We're always being left goodies on our doorstep from neighbours. What you give out is what you get back. My advice to anyone moving to Tasmania (or anywhere) is to join community groups, volunteer at local events, get to know the locals, embrace your new town/life. My husband says he'll never move back to the mainland even if i wanted to (I dont). Calls himself a Tasmanian now. It is a great, lil island with so much to offer Oh and yes its a bit odd in Penguin having a rail line go through it, but thats part of the history of the region and locals have embraced this quirky feature. Just depends how you look at things, I guess! 😊 Certainly would cost an absolute fortune of money we don't have and probably a logistical nightmare relocating the train line into the hills behind the town, even if it was a bit more aesthetic
I've lived in Tas for several years having moved from the Mainland and time in UK. You need to be flexible and adaptable. Easier if retired. Also the weather is ok if you don't like heat of the Mainland. Prices have gone up but still cheap compared to Mainland.
I’m looking at moving to Tassie from nsw (near Byron bay)…I’m looking forward to stepping back in time, slowing down from the rat race to hike,boating,hunting & seeing less traffic & people…& be in colder weather.

I’m sorry you had that experience. As I said in the video, I eventually found the normal and nice people rather than just the psychos, but that’s because I stuck it out. I’ve moved many times as a kid, including interstate, and it can be extremely difficult to be the outsider in a community where trust is low. Hopefully the move back is beneficial.
Well she has the right to share her experience and we all find it interesting and every person has different views and experiences so you don't have to comment by telling her to go home just because you can't take a piece of truth , take your nasty attitude with you when you do leave .
@@fair98fair I can tell you that Townsville has a terrible juvenile crime rate which was getting so badly out of control but think they are cracking down heavy on it now . Most cities anywhere have crime rates sadly , gone are the days when I remember as a kid Noone ever really had to worry about locking up their homes just to dash to the store nor cars .

My partner and I are looking to move to the Launceston area in 2026 after we’ve saved a good chunk of money. We’re both teachers and love the state as NSW dwellers. My partner grew up in Scotland so Tasmania really made her feel at home Watching your video and how it ended with that positive swing regarding community and relationships really felt great There’s always a silver lining!

I lived for 9 months around Hobart and the Huon Valley. I loved it very much. I could see myself living permanently there. My concerns are work and rentals. I loved how honest you spook about the pros and cons of moving to Tasmania. Very insightful. Thank you.

I’m so over the terrible traffic, the escalating crime and the heat in summer. I just relax whenever I’m in TAS, and feel the tensions melt away. Unfortunately Im not in TAS very often. Well the good thing about Tasmania is it's not nuclear active so there's no nuclear bombs pointing at it and there are 87% of the human population living in the northern hemisphere with 13% living in the southern hemisphere in the further south you go the less people there is

Thanks for this very helpful commentary on Tassy life for a new immigrant. Others have told me about lack of work and the underfunded healthcare system. Born in Adelaide, I moved here in November 1995. Tassie may be cold in the winter but the summers are great (November, December and January are the best months) and the weather overall is good all year round especially in the NW. I see you are in Burnie. I live in Ulverstone and yes the rail line runs through the town but I am fine with trains, there are only 4 per weekday and 2 per weekend day.

I’m going to be honest. I really think, having lived in Hobart, Tasmania all my life since I was 3, to this date now I’m 25, I’ve never been more miserable, lost and depressed in my entire life. Five years ago I spent a few years in Melbourne and my life started to change for the better. I realised a lot of my depression and anxiety had dissipated very quickly, within weeks, and I wasn’t constantly feeling stared at and abused driving on the road because I own a luxury car. Tall poppy syndrome is massive in Tasmania. The boganisim is out of control and Tasmanians are extremely ignorant. Not all, but my god it’s hard to find good ones. The people I’ve met here have been mainlanders and immigrants. I’ve never been able to integrate since I was little with a Tasmanian. Now we come to the weather. Hobart you can expect most of the year to be cloudy, cold and raining. I drive a lot, most times of the day, and the weather is a constant dreary theme. Cloud, rain, cloud, drizzle, cold. If you manage to get your vitamin d and natural sunlight, make the most of it because it doesn’t last long down here. The drivers are generally highly aggressive or self entitled. You expect this behaviour on the road on the mainland because of the large population, and people there genuinely have places they need to be. Then, such as in Melbourne, you notice on weekends and after work hours people start to relax and drive normally again. Not in Tasmania. Driving in Hobart on a Sunday is more stressful than driving peak hour on the Westgate bridge in Melbourne. Please highly consider before moving here, there’s a lot of what I would honestly call propaganda about this island. They need to push an agenda to keep the economy going down here. The amount of people over the years I’ve met down here who have turned from successful, motivated people to being hooked on substance and losing everything is something I don’t even want to speak about, the amount of young professionals who have left and are so happy living on the mainland, like the cloud has lifted from their eyes and they’ve realised reality now since getting away from here. Please, be careful before moving here.
Nobody hooks you on drugs. You choose. If a person doesn't like Tassie or appreciate then leave and find somewhere that suits you just as you have done. I wish you well. Many folk love a appreciate Tassie. Employment and housing are big problems around Australia..

I'm seriously thinking of selling up and moving to Tasmania with my family from Brisbane. We have to move in the next 2 years anyway as we are running out of space at our house with cars,2 kids,boat, caravan etc and need a tree change/sea change too. I'm only really worried about the weather. Everything else in Tasmania is beautiful from the fresh produce to the scenery and culture. We have been to a lot of places on holidays but loved tassie. We have just come back from a few weeks there in an RV camper Van. We are sick of the hustle and bustle and need some more space and houses are slightly cheaper in Tasmania. We love camping, fishing and adventuring but Queensland is expensive. I am an electrician and my wife is a carer/support worker so finding work shouldn't be too hard. We are looking at possibly Huonville as house prices are OK and it's close to Hobart for work. Where would be good to look for real estate with a bit of land, views, lakes, creeks(for fishing) and not too expensive yet within 40 mins drive to Hobart? Thank you - yep. I left decades ago now and wanted to move for most of these reasons. It has changed quite a bit in that time and I don’t think for the better. I enjoy visiting and still want to maintain that connection but not be immersed in it. Essentially it didn’t offer me what the mainland had to offer and it was too inward thinking and stifled me in many regards. As far as the traffic goes I rarely went to Hobart but I find the traffic in Tasmania better than the mainland. I miss the beauty of the landscapes but hey as I said I can visit. I would never discourage anyone from moving there. The people are friendly if you pick and choose and take the time to get to know. I appreciate an honest review. Everyone’s experiences are different.

Great questions, I should do a video on it 😊 The short answer is that winters near the north and east coasts are quite mild, if blustery. South and inland (Hobart and Launceston) are much colder.
Greetings from Ohio. I really enjoyed your video and learning about Tasi. I would like to hear more of your insights about Tasi. Companies in the US can be difficult but perhaps not to the level about which you were speaking. But they vary greatly here. In the US the southern and western parts are hot and I'm like you in that I thrive in colder weather like here in Ohio, which is cold but does have 4 distinct seasons with little if any extreme heat. Places like Denmark, WA seem like nice little towns but they likely lack things to do and good health care. There are pros and cons to most places.

Wow, thanks for a very insightful video. We're weighing up pros and cons of moving from Sydney to Northern Tassie or Hobart next summer for a year or so. We're a bit opposite to you in that we don't miss family (moved here from Europe 3 years ago and haven't seen anyone since). We make do with each other, don't really have friends, meet other people maybe once a quarter. I would work remotely for my Sydney employer and my partner would have a government contract (we would only move for that). We come from a cold part of Europe, but love the heat and since our arrival in Sydney only ever been to Queensland (5 times, 4 of which to TNQ)... but we also love local wildlife, wombats, penguins, seals, so we feel we would make do for a year or so. My work would require me to come back to Sydney anyway after that... while some of your experiences are super scary and I'm so sorry to hear that, I'm glad that you enjoy your life there. It makes us want to consider the move if it comes to it...

My question is,would the aged care wage be comparable to the $30 an hour she currently gets? Are there quite few aged care homes in the northern areas of Tasmania? How would you deem Tasmania as a retirement option from say 55 years onwards? My wife’s family live in Sydney and Melbourne and figure it would be close and cheap to travel by plane as opposed to living in nz?
It’s certainly very popular for retirement, and probably still cheaper than NZ. If you’re reasonably fit you could live in some of the prettier and remote areas like the east coast, or Bruny Island. The bigger towns are all very good for hobbies and social activities. It’s also responsibly easy and inexpensive to fly to Melbourne and Sydney. People do that regularly.
Be a friend to have a friend. Go do some volunteer work and you will meets loads of lovely welcoming Tasmanians. Mainlanders can be quite citified and judgemental. I've met so many people from overseas and mainland who work hard and make a way and make friends. In my experience it takes 6 months to a year to get to know people slowly. True friendships happen slowly. There are clubs and groups to join. Small populations are also wary of newbies because they have had bad experiences of being used and abused so it works both ways. If you are not critical or judgemental of others you will find like minded people. It takes time. True friendship is earned. I wish you well.

I live in Hobart and have family in Sydney. We chat regularly. All I have heard from them over this summer is how hot and humid it is and how they can't sleep at night for the heat. I've never known them complain about the heat and humidity like they have this year. I, on the other hand, send them photos of glorious Hobart bathed in sunshine while I enjoy very comfortable early 20s summer weather. They all all moving here this year or next. I love the cold too and absolutely love the Tasmanian weather.

I know there’s this supposed “tension” between mainlanders and Tasmanians, but I’ve never noticed it. I feel like when I go to Tassie, I’m walking into someone else’s house so I’m always respectful and I get respect back. Yeah… that’s kind of the point I was making about how difficult it is to move here sometimes 😬 most people can’t afford to rent an Airbnb while volunteering so they can find a job and then find a rental. It’s an almost impossible task. That’s just one reason I found Tasmania frustrating. 2. I don’t have extensive knowledge of the rental market of Hobart, you would probably be better searching the real estate sites. From my searches, it’s looks like $1000 a week is the average rent in the centre of Hobart. Which town is cheapest? Depends what you’re looking for or how you define “town”, but I’d say Queenstown is the most affordable.
I have lived in Tassie all my life. 90% of what you are saying I have never experienced or heard of. People need to keep an open mind and evaluate things for themselves.
I know a family who went to Tassie to run the Christian schools, they built a beautifull home but ended up selling it as it was too showy for the locals they then bought a tiny old house

Farmers, fishermen, working class tradies, so not Sandy Bay types etc. Of course there are dodgy people about, but I've never heard or seen anything like you've described. Its the fault of the international migrant workers deserting Tasmania for more prestige, not the Tasmanian Health Service! Its very sad, the doctors and admin, and scientific research fields are exceptional! The workers are lazy!
Without exaggeration, this comment is so true. Our health system literally is killing people, sure Tasmania has lovely views, however health care is substandard.
You've obviously never experienced 3rd world health care! What a stupid and inaccurate statement. Obviously we can't offer everything that Sydney and Melbourne can, but they have the same ambulance ramping problems etc that we experience as well. I've been here 35 years and I've always received the health care I need when I needed it.

A friend of mine Adam Gibson is originally from Tasmania. I think he lives in Australia now. The only thing I know about it is that China bought all the cattle / meat supply.
There’s a massive corner of the NW called Cape Grim which is a cattle station owned by a foreign company. Pretty sure it’s Chinese but could be multinational.
Not true Chinese investors bought some farms but many have now sold them. They did not ever have any huge numbers. They had a large dairy operation near Cape Grim.I think Adam is back in Tasmania now
...and Devonport to Stanley is a two hour drive. Plus driving to Port Arthur from Hobart is also two hours. Perhaps you misunderstood what I meant by diagonally from furthest point to furthest point?
Thank god I grew up there, my family were well respected there, and I still have family there, so I won't need to whinge all over the world when I move back! Its not that small, or that cold, and you can afford to keep a dog and travel, and study, so it can't be that bad!? Join a club, and learn to be positive! 😏🤨

I’ve made 37 videos over 4 years about Tasmania which are overwhelmingly positive and extol all the virtues of this place. Only one video actually discusses any negative aspects. You’re unable to look past one honest conversation video to see a broader view and that’s very sad, but it’s not my problem.

Lots of downsides living in Tazzie I know so please be careful those with high hopes when moving here . Climates lovely if you want to escape hot climate and seasons are lovely . Be careful with jobs and rentals please that's the catch .
Thanks for sharing, I have done the move south from the mainland too...(just before covid) I had to go back to the mainland for surgery... Then came back down... Yes there can be problems but when I went back north I just couldnt wait to come back down...( And it kept getting delayed. By many months) I'm just so greatful to be back in Northern tassie 😁.
Boy this is off putting. Planning on moving down from QLD in a few months. I found Hobart really arty and cool on a visit and it seems still affordable...
To add to my last comment just want to check out the scene before making a move to Tasmania and do not want to bump into the wrong people or end up living on the wrong side of the tracks for my family`s sake.
I worked in Tassie in a management role for a famous Tas Hotel chain there. The locals resent mainlanders, tbey bitch behind your back. Still a place where small thinking goes on with opposition to progress. Then there is the north south thing. Be grateful for your new stadium for gods sakes. You can have that plus public housing....
People like you is the reason why we hate mainlanders. Telling us that we should be "grateful" that the government is spending a billion dollars in taxpayers money on a new stadium which literally nobody here wants or needs. And you say that we can have a stadium and public housing? Then why not build the housing FIRST, not the stadium? People are living on the streets. What good is a stadium to them when they're homeless? We already have 2 stadiums. We don't need another one. And certainly not one that is paid for by the taxpayer. If you want to spend a billion dollars on something as useless as a 3rd stadium just to appease the AFL, then the AFL can go pay for it themselves. Why should ordinary Tasmanian taxpayers pay for something that they're probably not going to be able to afford to visit in the first place?
