Our Bernese is almost almost 2.5 years old. He is a wonderful dog and strong as a horse. I worry about him breaking my knees when he pushes up against me, I don't think he realizes his size or strength. I have heard cancer has increased amoung all the breeds and the blame is being laid at the feet of commercial dog food companies. We have supplemented his meals with beef heart and a fried egg. I hope this helps prevent cancer.

Add broccoli &/or spinach to their egg yolks, with water in microwave, not fried!!

@@ericajones2537 why not fried? Can I scramble the egg?

Thanks for watching! They tend to not know their own strength so consistent training for the behaviors you want is crucial. If he’s too aggressive leaning against you, try correcting that by moving away from him each time he presses too hard. In terms of the cancer risk, a lot of it comes down to genetics and lack of antioxidants in the diet to help prevent cell damage and mutation (cancer). Commercial kibble lacks antioxidants when compared to feeding a balanced fresh/raw diet. But if you want/have to feed kibble, supplementing with foods that contain antioxidants can help. Look for foods that contain kaemperfol - examples would be leafy greens like spinach, kale, collard and turnip greens. Cruciferous veggies like broccoli, cabbage and brussel sprouts are also full of antioxidants. Berries too. Animal proteins like beef heart and egg haven’t been linked to decreasing the risk of cancer exclusively, so try adding in some of these foods too. But great job in supplementing with actual whole foods! Let me know if there’s anything else I can help with.😊

A good rule of thumb is to keep fresh/raw food bland and unseasoned. Frying adds unnecessary fat and oils to the diet that can actually offset the good you’re trying to do by feeding the eggs. And yes you can feed scrambled eggs! We do a few times a week. Just don’t add salt, pepper, a lot of butter etc.

I'm finally in a position where I can get myself a dog again and if all goes to plan I'm getting a Berner puppy early july! I've had dogs around me while growing up, and had a few rescue dogs as an "adult" but this is going to me my first puppy that I raise on my own and all these videos you and others post are super helpful! Keep it up :)

Congratulations! I’m so happy for you. I too am thinking of expanding my pack. Our Great Pyrenees really needs someone to care for and hang out with. We’ve gotten over the sticker shock of owning a giant breed. I recommend the Orvis dog beds. Expensive yes. But they are a fine product, (bought the largest tempurpedic with a bolster) because the last one lasted for nearly 8 years. But it’s worth every penny. Giant breeds get lots of attention. Get ready to be the star on your block!

@@emmabovary1228 our dogs seem to do so much better with a playmate. It makes sense with them being pack animals, but you can really see their mental health improve when they have another dog to live life with. And I second the fact that you’ll never again have a walk where you aren’t stopped every 5 feet or so! Everyone loves the gentle giants😊.

@@emmabovary1228 Thank you! She was born 2 weeks ago, so I'm picking her up in 6ish weeks, just in time for my well timed 5 week summer holiday :) Orvis seems to be kind of hard to get a hold of where I live, but I will look them up and see if I find something similar that I can get here. It wont have playmates living in the house for now, if it goes well and I feel it fits maybe she will get a little brother/sister next year. But it will spend a lot of time with other dogs since most of my family, neighbours and colleagues have dogs as well so hopefully that will be good company for a while. One of the rescues I had was a rottweiler and a lot of people were scared and sceptical of it, until they got to know him because of their reputation, so I'm looking forward to getting some more positive attention while out walking :)

@@beautyandtheberners I'll be picking her up and bringing her to her new home in 6-7 weeks so I am superhappy and excited that it worked out and I managed to time it with a long summer holiday so I get to spend a lot with here from the start :) I have a million questions and right now it's just piling up, but I think a lot of them will answer themselves when I finally can bring her home with me. Also the breeder likes to be very involved so I'm probably gonna bombard her with questions the coming weeks :) As for topics I'm not really sure at the moment, but I'm sure they will pop up once I get her here. Thank you!

I've wanted a Berner for ages and was looking for one as a service dog prospect, but their short lifespan made it a poor choice for me. 😢 So I'll continue loving them from a distance. Thanks for the great video!

Aww yes that really is the biggest downside of the breed. But the time we do have with them I wouldn’t change for anything! But I totally respect and understand your decision.😊 Thank you for watching! If there’s any particular question/area you’d like me to do a video on I’m happy to help!

I agree with almost all points BUT I would put a lil caveat on 2 of them. 1) berners do have a big will to please but they also possess a level of independence that borders on stubbornness in some individuals. you need to be able to put your foot down and assert yourself, especially through their formative years (mine is 2 now and currently has a bit of a rebelious streak). 2) they DO shed but not as much as I thought before our babe moved in. depending on the climate you live in (in my case, switzerland) they shedding will be most prominent during the seasonal fur change. while I recommend getting your berner used to at home fur care, introducing them to being professionally groomed at an an early age can be very beneficial (especially the coat blowout). just make sure the groomer knows how to care for a double coated breed properly. I truely believe berners are the best and I think I will not let my house be without one ever again 🥰

Thank you for your thoughtful comments! I do agree that some can be stubborn and you definitely need to be firm and consistent in training and manners (really with any dog but especially the big breeds). Love that you live in their native country! And yes, I would never not have one! They’re the best🥰

No cons for having a dog like me. Berners are the complete package: we are cute, strong, low maintenance (all dogs shed, so...), we guard the place and take care of it and of the people.

Another con: their very sensitive stomach, specially when puppies. Some (if not most) are even allergic to chicken.
