I work for a roofing company and let me tell you we highly don't recommend doing shingle over just cause there's honestly more disadvantages than advantages whereas tearing off the old shingles and having a new roof has more advantages. The guys in this video covered it with the advantages which is that it can save you some money and there's also less trash but shingling over an existing layer honestly isn't worth it in the long run. There's more disadvantages than advantages with shingling over shingles. We try to talk most homeowners out of it but if the homeowner or homeowners insists that that's exactly what they want then that's what they're gonna get.
Honest question. If a shingle roof is old but has not started leaking, and an overlay is done with new flashings, how could the underlayer leak? Doesn't the new top layer protect the underlayer?
The new top layer should not leak, but when it does, the leak may present itself farther away than the origin of the leak on the top layer. This is because the water may travel to a different spot due to the 2nd layer. This isn’t always the case, but I’ve seen it. Also, the base layer can get saturated with water and start rotting large sections of decking.
We try to not be biased and not be pushy but I will say I recorded this video like two years ago. I highly do not recommend you do a layover. The whole point of the video is that there are very few situations, and I mean very few, where it makes sense to possibly consider a layover
@@roofingtips need to do research on the roofing products available now. They're many companies that manufacture shingles that are designed for roofing over an existing roof.
@@brettsurrett4596 nearly every manufacturer has specs for doing layovers, but it doesn’t mean it should necessarily be done. There’s some situations, some, that it may make sense, but it’s always better to do a complete tear off. That’s my opinion. We are both entitled to our opinions. Thanks for the convo
