I love the forjars lids. The sealant is thicker than ball. Lately ball lids, the sealant is very sloppy. And the last 2 cases I have opened the lids have been dented on the rim. Any time I open a case I replace the lids with forjars. I have never had a failure with the forjars. Plus forjars came through when Ball literally dropped the ball during the election infection

I didn't know that I thought they made them at their address? BTW. I ordered their new regular and wide mouth funnels. I received two regular mouth. MY issue is I cannot get a response about my order from ForJars. I sent photo of same regular mouth funnels. I went to chat, I emailed, I called them, All I get is NO response. The chat all says sorry we are out of the office.@@mariayelruh

Thank you for this. I'm about to fill up the last of my "jar shelves" this season and my goal is to take an accounting of each size jar I have and get reusable lids for each next spring (tax return purchase)... I have about 1300 jars, so it's going to be a major purchase. I've had a preparedness goal for a long time to have a years worth of food on the shelf for our entire family at all times. I developed the goal 15 years ago after struggling to recover after a major surgery; and, just being unable to help put dinner on the table, as a Mom, hit me in a painful/ helpless kind of way. When the lid shortages came about in 2020 it reignited my stagnant goal.

I inherited boxes and boxes of Kerr lids from my grandma (and her canner!) from the 70’s-80’s. Those lids have always been 100% success and also re-used with great success! The rubber is nice and thick.

Thanks for this video! I bought some tatler lids from the Amish store and he said to tighten them really tight or they won't seal. He said the men tighten them for women. Lol what a difference. @RainCountryHomestead
@RainCountryHomestead 9 месяцев назад
@@michelewilliams6241 That is very wrong and dangerous. Just as I explained in the video above, that is a good way to cause the jars to explode as they must be able to vent during the canning process, the tightening down only happens after removing from the canner. Even if they do not explode, they are unlikely to properly seal as they were not allowed to vent, which is necessary to pull the air out, like vacuum sealing. The way I showed in the above video is the right way and it works

As avid canners that was definitely some enlightening info. We generally use ball lids and usually can reuse them multiple times if they were water bath canned. Usually can't get a second seal if pressure canned. Just our experience there. However we will likely look into these other brands now after hearing your experiences. Thank you for the info!

I also use my canning lids to vacuum seal after I can with them. I was use a brake bleeder for years, but I just got the love moment vacuum sealer and it’s my favorite. It’s small and portable. It makes it so much faster when I got several varieties of peppers dry. I put it on a jar and start it, while it vacuums I fill the next jar.

We are sold on Superb lids, we also have old Ball lids purchased when they were cheaper. We bought a big bunch of Superb lids on a trip to Ohio in Walnut Creek, they were a "managers special" at a store there. Weve tried some odd brand China lids inthe past that would not seal water bath or vacuum seal, totally worthless.

Dollar tree sells canning lids10/$1.25 minimum $30 online, they work! I have a nice supply of new lids, but I reuse lids, b/c I want to “learn” the boundaries. I am noticing a trend with a generic gold lid with a button in the middle that I bought in a paper sleeve. They occasionally do not seal, I will have to keep my eye on them, to figure out the problem.

It seems almost every RU-vidr recommends the ForJars lids. Some say that's all they'll use. I personally choose to not use them until they're made here in the U.S. I'm not saying they aren't high quality, I just prefer to buy made in America whenever possible. I know people say they love the ForJar lids and that's fine. I will continue using Ball and Golden Harvest. Both are made in the U.S. at the same factory and both work perfectly for me. Also, the Golden Harvest are half the price of ForJar lids and when you do HUGE batches of canning, that makes a big difference.

I do not think many even realize they are made in China. It is not advertised and on some of the boxes it is very hard to see where it says that, I am sure that is intentional but that was the first thing I looked for when they sent me the lids for free, totally unsolicited. I was very wary of them at first for that reason but they do work great.
@his-sweetie

Yes, that is my preference too. I always look, thats why I won't use Purr or Roots or two lumps of Sugar. Seems like there's a bunch now made elsewhere. And it matters to me I'll pay a little extra. Luckily, as you stated, Golden Harvest is a great price, great product and a very pretty gold color.

@RainCountryHomestead China will make whatever quality you want to pay for. Forjars is ordering quality. The counterfeit Ball lids that were showing up in 2021 were never meant to do anything but grab cash from unsuspecting Americans. I will stick with Superb, who has managed US production.

My first canning experience with Tattlers was great. All the jars of chicken broth sealed. Sadly over about a six week period, they all unsealed themselves. I had been waiting on another order from Tattler to be shipped so I called to attempt to cancel the order before it shipped. The person who answered the phone was the owner of the company’s wife. She was shocked that I wanted to cancel the order and insisted that I speak with her husband. He called me and discussed the seal failures with me. His answer was that I didn’t clean the tops of the jar properly and probably didn’t tighten the lids enough after canning. I am absolutely anal about cleaning the rims and tightened the jars the best I could. I was able to cancel the order. They were very nice but couldn’t believe that I actually didn’t want more.
@RainCountryHomestead
@RainCountryHomestead 6 месяцев назад
The cleaning the tops of the jars would not have been my first thought, it would be if they were properly tightened both before going in the canner and after coming out. If you do not tighten them down after taking them out of the canner, they will not hold a good seal if they seal at all and if you tighten too much before going in the canner, they will either explode (lose their lids) in the canner or will not properly seal. They are tricky but once I got the hang of it, I have not had any issues and am glad I have plenty

I have been getting one bad seal almost every time I use the tattler lids. I haven’t tried 4 jars but will look into them. The Ball lids are getting more cheaply made, I noticed dents in the sides when I take them out of the box, and the sealer sometimes slops up over the edges. I think Ball is resting on it’s name and getting a little sloppy. Many Blessings!

I have not needed to buy lids in years but I know that more and more people are having issues with the Ball and Kerr. I am wondering if they are now made in China. Heidi: Yes I do mean the chamber vacuum sealer. Most of the glass jars that I reseal for shelf stable items are pickle jars, jam jars, salsa glass jars and prego glass pasta sauce jars with metal lids. I have a Vacmaster 230 and it was expensive, but I feel it has already saved me the cost of the unit, with the cheaper bags and the meat being protected from freezer burn it has turned out to be a good investment for my family. We no longer toss out leftovers, I bag and seal them and they get re-heated later and eaten. You can vacuum seal wet items in it. I often prepare pre-cooked meals and vacuum seal for later use. Our food waste has gone down to less than 10% and that includes the peels and cores and usual parts of loss due to prep.

I gift a lot of canned items and the Superb are pretty and I have personally never had a fail. But rarely do with the others either if i remember to straighten the fold that seems to be on two or three if the Ball or Kerr ones. I realy like the Golden harvest, but have had one or two fails on them the past year or two. Typically, a fail doesn't bug me just gives me the opportunity to use what I've been doing. I have tried the forjars lids and have been disappointed. Every batch I've done in the pressure canner, and a couple in the wb, I've gotten at least one buckled lid. I have also struggled a bit with the tattler lids. My seal rate averages 50/50 with them. I am sure that it is user error and will continue to try and learn from others. My main preference for lids are the no name ones I get in bulk from the Amish store or Lehman's. Reusable, sturdy and reliable. I love Tattler and Superb. Azure Standard carries Superb lids. I won’t buy or use ForJars because aren’t transparent about being made in China on their website. I want to know that info BEFORE I buy, not find out after I’ve spent $ and read it on the box. They have been called out on that fact several time and have gone back and forth on their website from being upfront about it to being shady about it. Just having an “office” in Florida doesn’t mean anything, nor does years of saying they are going to build a factory in the USA to make them. If they were simply committed to be upfront, I would have considered buying their lids. I don’t have a lot of $ but I’d rather pay more to support jobs in the USA with a company that I respect. I love the reusability of Tattlers. I have had good success with them after getting through the learning curve. I have been able to reuse Superb lids, never had any problems with that, but usually reuse after pressure canning them only for steam canning jelly/juice.

@michelleHotchkissArt - if you go to Suttons Daze youtube channel, ForJars have done at least 1 or 2 of her Monday night lives. They are very upfront about having to make them in China right now. They explained their operation in Florida too. I've had nothing but success with their products, and I agree with Heidi, that even though I try to stay away from Chinese products, she's right about the start-up costs, etc. & being able to get started making them in the USA. Take a look at those interviews & give them a try. I ONLY use Ball lids for vacuum sealing because for some time, when you open a new case of jars, the lids act like they're sealed on already & have a ring invention like they're used. These lids are some of the only failures I've had in the last several years after years of canning with them. Good luck & God bless you & yours.🙏🙏

OH! Forjars made in China. So are those new Azure jars. We should be appalled. What are chances that when they get their American factory sometime that they will be the same price? or even near it? They just can't make competitively priced items with labor rates and taxes and and. What is their motive for moving to US when everyone doesn't mind their source? Such lighthearted dismissal of our manufacturing crisis is scary to me. When suddenly everyone praised Forjars to the sky on every channel, receiving lots of free supplies, I cringed. Love Tattlers and I wish everyone would move to them, Nothing compares to reusable. The price of any metal lid is ridiculous. I am from the 19 cent per box era pre 1973.

I doubt any company is going to be able to come back to the US for production while the current government is in charge. With high taxes and everything else that forces them to either go to another country, or go out of business.

My issue with forjars is they have been saying that for over 3 years and they now make jars so it appears they are making $$. Just my 2 cents and I wish they would follow through with what they have claimed. I don't have issues with superb being used more than once, but I also simmer them for a few min to soften them back up. I also use harvest guard and like them, but there is a learning curve for sure.

I have had a lot of seal failure with Orchard Road lids compared to name brand Kerr and Ball. Last batch, 6 of 10 lids failed. They bent a lot after taken out of water bath and failed to seal. I had bought them during pandemic when lids were scarce, big waste of money. Have not tried ForJars.

Do you have a video of your ‘experiments’ reusing metal lids for water bath or pressure canning? I do save these for dry sealing dehydrated foods but I’d like to know your tips and tricks or observations. It would be great information if we got into a situation when we had to reuse those lids without other choices. For now I repurchase new every year so this would just be for emergency purposes. If I tried it I would for sure keep those can goods accessible to check the seal weekly.

One more comment, when visiting the tattler lids site I see they have a new **disposable** metal lid with separate rubber ring, I like the look of those because they have the button in the center to show when it’s sealed, do you know anything about these and is the *disposable* a hint that you could possible reuse these much like the plastic lids but not marketed as such because of regulation?

I haven't used ForJars lids yet, but have had some viewers tell me that they can pull the lids off with their fingers, so aren't confident in the seal. I've already read of people finding the lids were rusted on the inside after they had been sitting in the pantry for a year or so. I did reach out to them regarding where they are manufactured, and they told me China, but are working toward having them manufactured in the U.S. I'm leery of the long term effectiveness of them, so between that and the China thing, I'm waiting on using them.

Heidi: Have you tried using the Superb with a Tattler ring. Pam over on RoseRed Homestead used the tattler rings with regular canning lids when there was a shortage and they seemed to seal and stay sealed just fine. That is because I never agreed to be an affiliate, one has to do that in order to offer a discount. Is anyone else having trouble with the regular size rings? They are difficult to get on, then almost impossible to remove. All the fails I’m having now is due to the rings. Why? I think the newer rings are slightly too small. Not a problem with the large mouth rings.

I did buy ball jars new with lids and rings, half pints. They went thru pressure canning well, one puffed up with dents! But once cooked, I couldn't get the rings off! I tried putting in hot water, using a gripper, had to resort to a jaw type opener that tightens a I turn. That one can crush threads if I'm not careful.
