What exactly is medical tourism? How safe is it to travel to another country for a medical procedure? And what about mixing a little vacation with some dental work?
As of 2020, approximately 1 in 10 people in the US under the age of 65 are medically
uninsured. So why is health care so expensive in the US? Our friends from @TwoCentsPBS stopped by to help us explain what’s up with the rising cost of those medical bills. And before you pack a suitcase and throw on a “Hi, I’m a medical tourist” t-shirt, Alok and Sheena share some of the risks associated with medical tourism. "As a CUSTOMER, your relationship with the hospital..." This is disgusting. We should never have to be consumers to receive health care in the first place. As an American, this is terrible.

I can flly to India and do 2 root canal under 800 euro. So my family visit is planned around my tooth ache.

It's sad this even needs to exist =$. I remember reading a cost comparison years ago of cancer treatment in the US vs moving to Spain for a year, waiting for Spanish Medicare eligibility then getting it done there and returning home ... moving turned out to be cheaper.

On the other hand, getting quality-of-life chronic conditions treated in Canada is no easy feat. The US’s system is not ok, but nor is Canada’s for all patients.

So glad I don’t live in the USA. The only thing I pay is €19 per month for the woman who comes each week 3 hours to clean the house. Yes, that’s also medical costs. Just like the woman who comes 5 days to help women who just give birth. American expats are very enthusiastic about that.

My husband and I are paying $300/month for a bronze plan Obamacare (will only cover catastrophic illness). We are very healthy, we have no comorbidities, but receiving a cancer diagnosis could bankrupt us. We aren't paying for an entire family. In that case, our premiums would be > $1,000/month.

That's great care to have access to! Do you know of any Europeans engaging in medical tourism to avoid waiting lists or is the phenomenon fairly nonexistent where you reside?

@@pbsvitals Can't speak to Europe but I've never met anyone who has done that here in Australia. I rarely hear about it on those gossip news sites either. In my experience, the waiting lists aren't terrible even for non-emergent surgeries,thpugh granted, I haven't ever had myself, or anyone in my family have a condition that required more than half a year to treat.

In other countries they have a mixed health system so you can get private healthcare as well as public healthcare. For example you will be seen and get your knee replacement in maybe 6 months publicly or you can pay privately for the same operation which could be done by the exact same surgeon as some surgeons work in both public and private. The good thing is you do not have to go private and if your need is deemed to be greatest you will be seen ASAP

And now, after the ruling, there will be A LOT more people travelling for healthcare. Maybe they even face exile if they would be criminalized upon coming back home. >8(

Some people in my country have to go abroad to get specific treatment that isn't available in the country at all, and I can understand it though it's not really OK either. But this sounds super wrong.

It feels a little bit condescending to make it sound like other countries don't provide quality or safe healthcare and that Americans need to be oh so incredibly worry about that foreign healthcare. Yes you should obviously be looking for a clean and sterilised environment with trained health professionals but these absolutely do exist outside of the US. A good percentage of medical staff in any country are from countries other than that country itself. People also confuse clean with brand new and sparkly. A lot of hospital services are performed in buildings which are fairly old however that doesn't mean they are unclean or the staff are not professionals
