I am a merchandiser at dr pepper... i NEVER want to do blue collar work AGAIN. A desk job sounds like heaven to me, not being around thousands of customers all day.... not having to drive all day around the city... not constantly lifting 50 pounds or pushing 100 lbs. Going to school this winter, I cant wait to begin this journey🥳

I'd say a con is being stuck at a desk all day but that could also be a good thing since you're not outside in the heat or driving in traffic. I think a pro would be that it keeps you sharp because it's interesting. Another pro is the fact that you can choose whether you work independently or with others right?

@Victor Mendoza it’s a good thing , makes the job much smoothly for accountants , plus it will help accountants do their work . I have seen robots fixing patients surgeries but they still need doctors to monitor the robot if they are doing the right thing, same with accountants need to monitor the automatic system to see if things are running smoothly and accountants still need to input some transactions if needed when the AI can’t do it because the rules and regulations are always changing so we still need humans to do all the detailed work sis, plus accountants are professionals in the field of money keeping and law of the business, no one else can do that swiftly than accountants. Before I chose Accounting, I heard a lot of people saying accounting was boring, including accountants themselves. But after I finished college doing Accounting and worked for a period of time, I started wondering why in the world people thought accounting was boring. I think its just how other people perceived accounting work, because all other people see is a bunch of numbers and tables. And also, if an accountant only concentrates on making entries, and doesn't concentrate on the effects of making each entry and how it affects the financial position and how things can be improved, or how problems can be solved, then yes, "making entries" may seem boring. Accounting is a lot more than just making entries. I analyse the financial position, make forecasts, think about cash flows and recognize any problems that might arise, think about how they could be solved, talk to the management about the current and forecast financial position. Its also delightful to know that I know so much about the company, most of the time, even more than the managers. Accounting is boring if you make it boring. So far, I have loved what I'm doing and I don't see myself ever going out of the accounting field.

I worked as a chef for 13 year. Absolutely hated it after about the 5th year. No weekends off. You live at work and it's the same bullshit day in and day out. Bunch of uneducated drunks and drug addicts. And if you're not, you will be, give it time. I am 1 year into working my first entry level accounting job out of college and I absolutely FUCKING love it (pardon my French). I have fished, kayaked, golfed, never miss a sporting I want to see and I get paid more than I ever earned as a chef in my first job. You work with normal educated people. And I get to wear jeans every day. Anyone can work in a restaurant. Literally. Accounting weeds out those people. Professionals only. Best decision I made in my life

I've been in accounting since graduating but it wasn't for me after realizing it after 10 years. I've seen people who just do well with the monthly process and have nothing to complain about but are content with what they do. I realized boring not be the right term, but just wasn't the right fit for me overall. Accounting is a broad field so I wouldn't label it too quickly. I switched to programming but who knows if other areas of accounting would've fit me. Also, culturally I might've not been a fit in my view(female dominated in corporate). Too many variables.

A perk of getting a CPA is that when you retire you can still do taxes during tax season. I know someone that comes up to Chicago to do the taxes for people she's been working with for 20+ years. The money she makes Jan-Apr is her "fun" money. If you want to sit for CPA a masters in tax wouldn't hurt. Some schools allow you to do the 4 years+1 which means you get your MS in tax in a year. I believe you can get an MS in accy or an MBA the same way. It's hard work, but worth it. For anyone in school considering getting a masters, if you can do it, try to start right after your bachelors degree. Its hard if you wait cause life starts happening. I speak from experience. Its easier to put in long hours of work and school when you're in your 20s, not so much when you're in your mud to late 30s. When it hits 9 pm you wonder why you're still awake lol 🤣

Hi Shana! I suggest you do Accounting and Information Systems :) It is just a suggestion. Finance is a hard major to get a job for just because the major investment banks (JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, etc) look at the best business schools to hire. If you didn't go to a good school then it will be very hard to stand out, not saying it is impossible :). I know some of my accounting friends are doing accounting and information systems and they are heavily needed. If you could do more credits while you are in your community college, you may not need to double major. I suggest you meet with an advisor to determine if you can switch without going too much into debt. Please feel free to message me for any additional questions :)
@CalvinHodgson
@CalvinHodgson 6 лет назад
SuperShana97, a math major will likely give you more credits in math than you'll need for a BA/BS in accounting and finance. Does you college offer a transfer degree? That would be the preferred way I should have gone but didn't. Covers many of the lower division classes so you don't need to take that at the university level. Speak with your advisor or look at the general requirements for a bachelor in account/finance at a few universities. See what classes will transfer for credits and which will be essentially in the electives section. The last thing you may want is to have an extra term of classes now that you find out aren't needed when transferring.

@SaraMarie
@SaraMarie 6 лет назад
That's a great question and something I struggled with when I was deciding what to do for grad school. Unfortunately I don't have the "right" answer. From my conversations with co-workers and HR representatives, people usually recommend getting an MBA because it not only gives you the hours you need to sit for the CPA but also, if you plan to move up and become a manager, having the MBA is way better than a masters in Accounting. Again, those were just the opinions I was given, I don't know if it's truly representative of everyone. Hope that helps :)

MS Accounting is better because you only take accounting courses that will make you a better accountant. MBA has too much general business focus that will duplicate what you learned in an undergrad business program and not enough accounting specific coursework. MBA is meant for folks who did not go through an undergrad business program, such as engineers, etc. And unless the MBA is from a top tier program, it has no prestige attached to it whatsoever.
@michellei.6186

Hi Tanya! If you are trying to get your 150 for the CPA and you are close to it then I suggest to finish some courses at your local community college. You don't need a masters degree because the CPA is the masters in accounting. With a CPA you are a well rounded and very marketable accountant. In terms of comparing the both, I would probably look into IT or data base (information system) I know people enjoy going into IT audits with that. But overall to compare those two I would go with the MBA. Remember the CPA is a lot better if you want to advance in the accounting world. Most accounting firms won't give you the manager position if you don't have the CPA (big four, and other relatively large firms, etc.) Please let me know if you have any other questions :)

How much in school loans did you have after earning your BS in Accounting? How much will it cost to get your MBA? Did you attend State or Private College? Why do you want an MBA ?
@SaraMarie
@SaraMarie 6 лет назад
Jill from Funding Happy I had over $30,000 in student loans after graduating with my bachelors degree in accounting. I graduated in December and had all my student loans paid off by June. It will cost me $20,000 to get my MBA. I will graduate in May and will pay off my student loans that same month. I attended a state school for my bachelors degree and a private for my MBA. Getting an MBA was one of the ways I could get enough hours to sit for the CPA exam and it’s also highly recommended in order to move up in a company. In my experience, all the student loans and costs have been more than worth it. As you can see, in my experience, I was able to make enough to repay everything in very little time.

I'm currently earning my associates degree in accounting. Now, I know I can't be an actual accountant with this degree, but will I even be able to get a job with it? Would it pay decent ($30,000-$35,000) enough for me to live on. I don't want to be rich, just comfortable. Would it be hard to find a job with this degree? Should I just stop now, and do something else, or finish this degree?

Hi Sara! Just a quick question in regards to majoring in accounting. Long story short I discovered my love for accounting a little late (I'm currently a junior in undergrad) and I'm faced with a dilemma. I can either: 1. Major in accounting, bust out all the classes as fast as I can, cramming them into nearly 4 semesters and graduating a semester late, but with enough credits to take the CPA out of undergrad or 2. Majoring in economics and business, not have to cram, graduate on time and shoot for an MBA in accountancy to fulfill CPA requirements I already have a few internships in accounting with experience and just wanted to know if you had any advice for getting into the accounting field without a major in accounting. Thank you!
@SaraMarie
@SaraMarie 6 лет назад
Not sure which state you're in or what classes your MBA will offer but in my experience, I learned the most about accounting in my undergrad classes. My MBA was more of an overview - basically the bare minimum accounting that a manager would need to know. If I was in your situation I would take the extra undergrad accounting classes. But maybe talk to a counselor and see what they recommend? Hope that helps!!
