Hi! I did NJROTC for 4 years in high school and here is my take on it:)
I was the drill team captain, a mentor to freshman, and the Cadet Command Master chief (top 3 in the unit) my senior year...
What are your pros and cons of rotc? Let me know in the comments below!

I did four years of army JROTC. I did honor guard and saber guard, went in a buck private and came out a first lieutenant. I made life long friends from there.

When I was in 8th grade I wanted to join the wrestling team. The coach told me we would be running three miles for conditioning, so during the summer, I would run three miles whenever I went to the gym and at the end of summer I would just do fifteen minutes of hard running. Now I run a six minute mile.

I am still in my Junior year at Chaparral High School's NJROTC in Southern California and I have a few pros that I have experienced. As an upperclassman it is very prideful to see something that you have taught to underclassmen and for them to take it to their own level and use it everyday. My physical fitness has come a VERY long way. In our most recent PRT (Physical Readiness Test) I got 141 Curl Ups, 76 Pushups, and a 6:19 mile. Still not where I would like to be but it is a massive improvement nonetheless. My personal niche in the unit is in drill but I still find that the same discipline that goes into our drill teams is spreading to all of our teams. This is not all of the pros but I want to keep this comment somewhat short of what I could do. The cons that I have seen are definitely lack of or miscommunication between commanders and subordinates. It is our fundamental philosophy that those you lead are the demands that you must represent, not your own. It is something called Servant Leadership and it is something that some of our commanders still need work on. Another con is the misconception that JROTC is all about joining the military and that is a massive limiter on how many cadets we can expect to join us in a single year. JROTC is first and foremost a citizen development program to create citizens of good moral standing that can help their own development and the development of those around them. The last con that I've seen is all of the sexual harassment cases that happen in JROTC specifically. It is very disheartening to see this happen (it happened recently at at school less that 30 minutes from me that I know many of the cadets from) especially because it makes all of the rest of the JROTCs look bad across the nation. I hope that if anyone reading this comment has learned something and can give their own feedback.

Don’t forget about all the teenage drama. Some of the cadets I taught just kept getting into stuff. I remember talking to my buddy who was the Corps Commander before me. She told me about a whole soap opera that I had no idea about.

So i just got done with my first year to NJROTC and tbh i really loved it and did not at sometimes but i would have to say it was great most of the time besides Wednesdays OML i hated them lol when it was Uniform day omg lol but in the end its so worth it, if i had to rate NJROTC i would give it a 10/10 bc the community is amazing! The higher ranks will teach you from the rights to the wrongs! Now i will say i LOVED drill team and i caught on it so quick but i sadly had to move school and since i joined a diffrent school so late i could not join drill :< but i then moved back to my oringle school and finshed and i know for a fact im doing Drill my upcoming sophomore year

Im a freshman in NJROTC. There is actually some differences between our units. My unit we do PT two times a week, and a team isn't required along with the 20 hours of community and unjt service. My unit doesn't do weekly presentations, however it would be nice!

I am on my second year of NJROTC i love this program but in my school our Top 3 is not my favorite i love my XO but the others could be better but yes RESPECT THE RANK!!!! I Know I have to and everyone does. In my school the drill team is optional but it is still super fun and i would not trade it for anything we are all one big family.

I want to join so bad. But I am having trouble deciding. I am 5ft in 8th grade right now (15 years old). I am 115 for my weight and I am a little over weight. I always wanted discipline and hard challenges. But I am not a physical person AT ALL. I want to be a physical person but my past prevented me from doing it. I can't even do 1 push up 😂. ITs hard for me to work on it, I don't lose weight easily. All the excuses you can think of.. I am REALLY shy and introverted. I never liked to play in P.E class. I don't talk a lot or talk loud. But I get all A's and my GPA is 4.0. I don't think I will make it to JROTC. If you respond, you I have to join in the 9th grade or can I wait a year or 2? What about hair? Can I cut my hair short where it can't be in a pony tail but its still going to be long/in the way? Will my height be a problem? I also want to be in the air force but I am worried that with the way America is right now, I will be in war. I don't want to fly planes, I want to work with mechanics like my dad did, or maybe something else. Hopefully you can answer my questions and give me some advice! Jesus loves you!
@Test_6704
@Test_6704 Год назад
I'll answer a few questions, they won't make you cut you're hair, shave (you get graded so that means you get points taken off but that's it. . If you have more questions just google them.

It’s okay to not be in great shape before JROTC. Lots of people aren’t! Your height won’t be a problem I think you would really benefit from the discipline and confidence building that the program provides! You can have your hair in a pony tail at any length just has to be a natural color. Wishing you the best!

JROTC will help you become more confident. Beginning of this year I came in as a quiet person, little to no friends, and got hella shy when talking in front of people. But now things have changed, talking to people is not mandatory but it's what you do a lot there and it'll help. PT isn't a problem, they don't mark you down( in my school at least) and the people are VERY helpful. I suggest when you start and you run a mile try and keep in pace with someone who takes things slow.
