I'm enjoying every second of my time in Malaysia, I could've added way more to the list. What's your best PRO about Malaysia? 🤩🇲🇾

U are spot on...as a malaysian, we are more laidback and relax and chill...everything is average...im kinda appreciate it...no crazy night life...means more chill and peaceful...and im sure our country is much safer than neighbouring countries...more crazy nights, means more crazy crimes, and etc...

I lived in Malaysia with my family when I was a child from 2006 to 2010. I loved it and miss it tremendously. I miss the vibe, the laid back family friendly cosy vibe. The food, the nature, the people... I had an amazing childhood there. It must have changed a lot from since then... we lived in Lankawi, Putra Jaya and Kuala lumpur. I hope to move back one day.

Lepak culture in Malaysia helps relieve stress from work, hard life. Our lepak culture does not equate to night lifes in clubs but more at mamak, cafe, beaches, shopping malls

Why do people go to other countries and insist on hanging out with other foreigners? All the countries I've lived in apart from my own I've made friends only with locals 🤣

As a Malaysian here in Australia.. i miss Malaysia so much.. friendly environment..yea couldnt agree more with most comments here.. Thailand, Philippines and Indonesia are the options for cheap entertainment...Malaysia basically more into family vacation type and good business hub.. not too expensive like Singapore...

Great video as always, I value your pros & cons series a lot since it was really on point back in your Vietnam series (I live in VN so I could "check" lol). Malaysia really sounds like an ideal place for family vacation, you clarified much of my early doubt thank you!

Just go to Bangsar, Bangsar South, Mont Kiara, Damansara, Ampang, there's a huge expat community living there. Malaysia is more balanced, I mean we do have night life but nothing too cray cray like in Thailand or other SEA countries. It's suitable for normal living, for young families with kids, or retirees. There's nothing too obscene here, or too extremes, much safer than some other countries too. People are friendlier, and more diverse than the other neighbouring countries, widely spoken English and of course a heaven for foodies.

As a Muslim living in the US, I will retire on Malaysia.

I appreciate your pros n cons. I'm a retired solo traveler now resided in Siem Reap. The pros sound great, and the cons do not affect me. I don't understand why someone wants to travel but desires to live their personal lifestyle abroad. I appreciate your video. I need to check out KL.

My guess is expats in Malaysia tend to mix around with the locals more compare to Thailand (for example), since english is widely spoken here. Therefore expats here probably don't feel the need to hangout with other expats all the time. I could be wrong of course, but that's just my guess.

So glad I found this video! Thanks for posting, looking at other places to live from the US and am going to give Thailand a go. Will have to visit KL.

There' are not many expat communities because KL is not the preferred city for headquarters set up for international companies like Singapore. Another thing is, KL is a hidden gem in SEA. Not many people know about this city and country, so let's keep it that way. As a Malaysian, I would prefer our city kept in current way instead of being filled up with pubs and nightclubs that looks noisy and sinful (like Thailand) because of foreigners. Try to visit Malacca and Penang and their old towns, you might like them.

I agree with the lack of local clothes stores here especially in retail setting in KL. My take is because of the ridiculously high rent, its really difficult to survive just by selling niche local brands here, so most seller opt for fully online stores like instagram instead. If you see one in KL, most probably they gonna charge very extravagant amount a piece just to keep the shop afloat, and locals usually don't buy from these stores and we're also not their target audience lol..

After spending a year in Thailand and endless party nights and fun, I started to appreciate a more relaxed and laid back atmosphere. Malaysia is sounding more and more like my place.

Visited Kl over the weekend, fell inlove with the city its like Japan safe and clean!

Yes! Malaysia is more suited for family oriented living as compared to Party life in Thailand

Hi Skye like the vids I am interested in visiting Malaysia around April next year with the intention of moving over there later in the year .I would really like to have a catch up with you to get an idea of cost best places to stay I currently work remotely and plan on 2 weeks of travelling around then will try a week working remotely to see how things work out great keep up the vids hope to hear back from you

'local shopping' should be done in individual states around Malaysia, outside Kuala Lumpur. But if you still insist in looking for some local shops there are a few places within Kuala Lumpur in which you could do some 'local shopping' for instance, Pertama Complex or Kenanga Mall. Have a go.:)

There are bars where they sell cheaper alcohols but they are not in the central KL. Try going abit outside of the central like Bangsar, TTDI and Damansara. The average beer price would only be around rm11-20 and a bottle of wine around rm120. Some of the places i can recommend u are; Elephant rock (TTDI), RYU by Lye110 (TTDI), Baratas (Bangsar), Bilique (Bangsar), Brewhouse (local franchise bar) all around KL n Selangor, BATS (Damansara) and also in Mont Kiara and Hartamas where you hv a lot of nice bars/clubs. Also all these places stated are below 30 mins by car from the central.

As for "local shopping" u need to go to the outskirts of KL or the suburbs. Most locals don't actually shop at the malls foreigners/tourists usually go to in the city centre because it's just way too expensive. Locals still go to those malls but mostly for the atmosphere and to window shop. Actual shopping is done elsewhere

MALAYSIAN WELCOMING EVERYONE TO MALAYSIA, BUT RESPECTING OUR CULTURE AND BELIEF OF RACES. ENJOYING OUR VARIANT AND BEAUTIFUL KL CITY.

This country is family friendly. No weed here unlike thailand. But for partying and drinking better to visit bali or thailand. There are a few islands here that are tax free islands eg pangkor, langkawi. Yes visa is free, also you did not mention we never charge atm withdrawal fees like some countries in south east asia. But the sin tax is imposed on alcohol and cigarettes. To control consumption. Food and transport is never an issue here depending on what food you eat. If you go to bukit bintang to shop, it will be expensive compared to outskirt of town. It is like 5th ave new york city.

@skye samuels hey i watch your vidoes as i do value your opinion and value your advice, more of the city and places you're speaking of would be better than an 8 min video of seeing you speak. More footage of places, food, markets, etc makes it more interesting.

Skye, try go to a mall called SOGO at jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman…there u can find many local brand goods such as handbags, clothing and shoes n household furnishings…it is more of a medium range pricing goods and they always have sale…locals love going there…do check it out.

Hello, could you please someday make videos on historical places around KL city such as the national palaces (both old & new), museums, memorials, monuments and perhaps cemeteries too? Thanks in advance!

One con also is the mindset considering cleanliness, most cheap hotels will not have been maintained well and the cleaning is badly done in most homestays and hotels iv'e stayed in. Public toilets are a nightmare too. In comparison, in Vietnam or Thailand for example you will get an impeccable hotel room for half the price.

Hi. For local clothes you can go to Sungai Wang. There r quite a number of boutiques selling traditional as well as modern clothes there

There's an expat newsletter aptly named Expat. And I there's one expat society called Ibu Society. It used to be active but I'm not sure if it's still is. I used to borrow winter clothes from them.

Good video Skye. I have been checking out Vietnam & Thailand for a while & learned quite a bit, considering never being in either. I like S.E. Asia so much that I plan on going there & never coming back. Problem is, as you obviously know by your comment about 3 month visa being a godsend, staying in either is a real burden. 1 month in Vietnam, 3 in Thailand. Cambodia is much easier, but not my favorite place; no disrespect to the country. It's ok in many ways & the ppl are fine. To each his/her own. So as you know one has to bounce around. I never considered Malaysia simply because I was preoccupied with Thai, V & Cam. I like what I see! #1- 90 day visa. #2- food, I'm a gluten. #3- rent sounds ok, but further research needed. #4- transportation #5- Malaysian food & drink. Don't need western. #6- English widely spoken! Don't expect that either. When in Rome. Sounds like an easier language to learn than others in region. #7- all the cons you mention are pros. Don't care about seeing other foreigners. Don't object to other foreigners getting together, just not a priority. Less active lifestyle than Thailand is nice contrast. Thailand is great & a stone's throw away. I look at the region as a great source of variety. Agree 100% w you on little mom & pop stores!!! I love that. Chain stores certainly have their advantages, but not at the cost of cutting out the little guys. Even if prices are higher, nothing beats that personal touch. I believe Malaysia will play a big part in my travels. I'm 67, married & in pretty good shape for my age. I have my priorities & offset them by handling what most ppl consider burdens. Low rent is import, but not by sacrificing quality of life. I'll walk up 5 flights if it's a nice place. Not near public transportation, no big deal, older building, not much English, no convenience store nearby...you get it. Alcohol is expensive in bars, but bottles in liquor store I assume are more than other countries in the area, but much more affordable than the bars. Right? I will be checking out whatever other videos you've done on Malaysia. Is K.L. much different than Singapore? Let me know! & any other input you might have for me. 👍🇲🇾

You talking about nightlife.. I still remember, during the 80s & 90s, there are many live band concerts in Msia. Local rock bands. The ticket so cheap, around rm5 to rm10. Venue, they play music in the Halls, Funfairs, Public parks, stadium, parking lots, etc.. I miss that era..

I'm from the UK myself, and been to Malaysia 6 times and Thailand 4 times. Even though I have visited islands in Thailand that is known for its parties such as Koh Phangan, Koh Phi Phi and Koh Samui, I would never go to parties, bars and clubs because it isn't my thing. I didn't like Phuket much but loved Krabi though and Koh Lipe too. Both Malaysia and Thailand are amazing countries and you are right about the pros and cons in Malaysia but overall I think Malaysia suits me better on many levels. KL and Bangkok are actually 2 of my favourite cities that I been to and I have travelled to many around the world.

You can try to go to a Restaurant called Brew House. You can get a nice affordable Western food there

Although the cons she mentioned are true but within a positive reason malaysia isn't Thailand or Bali...it's a family relaxed place and above all it's officially a muslim country

Kuala Lumpur is a great place to live & work in. We intend to relocate to Malaysia very soon as the quality of life is so good.

Expat groups are in affluent areas like Mont kiara, Damansara Heights, Bangsar and Kenny Hills

3 months visa on arrival is the only pro worth mentioning - all others are much better elsewhere in the region

Especially In K.L Local brand item not really inside the shopping mall, it's locate outside mall. (Mall is maybe expensive to rent for local people )

Mont Kiara and Penang are two places that you can easily find those expats. They are living there for a long years now. Alcohol and parties are not the most important thing here in Malaysia as a Muslim majority country. We offer a lot and variety of FOODS! ✌🏻😁

You can go to malls like berjaya times square, sogo etc etc....and pasar malam to purchase cheap clothes.

Layback place for ex-pats other than KL, in my opinion, Damansara Heights and Mont Kiara. These places are accessible by trains or the Grab app.

There are a lot of local brands but they are not usually in malls. Their boutiques are usually in shop houses, shop lots etc and are situated in local shopping areas rather than touristy ones.

if you like to party you can go to thailand.. if you want comfort and good facilities malaysia is the place..

Yeah.. Depend on what tourist want on their vacation.. Malaysia for me just could offer more on family oriented vacation or tourist that want beautiful and unic scenary and new good culture... because Malaysia literally is muslim dominan country, so its a little not to 'very open' culture like thailand and other country can offer.. like naughty2 party, alcohol and so on.. so for Malaysia, we are just being us... And proud what we are/have

For me, of course it's food...so many varieties of food...not just Malaysian food...it's easy to get Korean, Japanese, Thailand, Vietnam, Western, Arabian, Mexican, etc...actually Western food is quite cheap...most of food in KL is expensive 😂😂...at my place, you can get chicken chop/chicken grill from RM5 to max RM15...if you happens to visit Malaysia again, you should try to spend time at Terengganu, Kelantan, Kedah, etc (east coast of Malaysia)...their food is not spicy n more suitable to foreigner...for more scenery and nature vibe, you should spent more time in Sabah & Sarawak...try make friends and contacts with Malaysian...the next time you come to Malaysia, ask them to take you to local place...hope to see you soon k 🥰

Hi Skye, I just came acrosd over your video. I am a German-Turkish expat living in New Zealand currently. My partner (a new zealander) has to travel for his job quite abit. And he got an offer to work in Kuala Lumpur for 2 years for the company he is working for. It came out of the blue tbh and it makes me quite nervous as I don't know about the culture and finding a job and well the food option in supermarkets (I have a few allergies 🥲). Could you tell a little bit more about how it is to live/work there? I heard Muslim is the main religion their. Coming myself from Muslim origins I know how friendly but also very strict people can be (I hope I don't offend anyone here😣). Could you tell more about how it is to live there as a woman? Ya... If you want to find local clothing shops in KL I would not recommend going to the big shopping malls. You would have more luck trying to find local shops outside of Central KL in the more locally part of KL

how about cooking at home fresh fish , fresh veggies, fresh fruits, fresh eggs ? also if you dairy free is there any nut milk?

As for cheaper options in Malaysia for backpackers, they can go to Penang , Ipoh, Taiping, Melaka, to name a few...

I lived in Malaysia for 17 years. Loved it but didn't love my Malaysian wife. It's cheap for the level of development and infrastructure. The food is fantastic, places to stay are cheap and a shopping paradise. Good family place.
