The most common form of prostate enlargement is benign prostatic hyperplasia, giving rise to bladder outlet obstruction causing lower urniary tract symptoms.
personal experience, a year ago. Had horrific prostate problems, numbers high, and was told I most likely had prostate cancer. Was scheduled for the dreaded biopsy. Found out from the Mayo clinic that there is a multi parametric MRI that is 98 percent in finding prostate cancer down to the size of a grain of rice. Found out after I had this I had hernia mesh movement onto the uretha tube and the back of the prostate. After a 6 hour operation to remove the old mesh, prostate returned to normal. What I'm saying is check all possibilities before you let some jackass lead you down the wrong road.
@Deco Electra wow that’s a quick reply. I hope you can get some prostate relief soon. If you don’t mind me asking, what kind of issues do you get? Thanks 🙏🏼
And I have an appointment for prostate examination at my local hospital tomorrow. Just as well we live in the 21st century, this must have been bad in the 19th C and back. Like so many other illnesses. Also been watching Dr C's coronavirus videos and MedCam's, too.
You are the best Dr Campbell. Best thing about this pandemic is that I found you laugh out loud. I'm 49 and only last month noticed this distinct change in my urethra while at the pub. This gives me all the info I could hope for ❤ A perfect youtuber and a natural. God bless and thank you.
Your depth of medical knowledge is very impressive equaled only by your ability to present it without dumbing it down or shortcutting the science. Goes without saying you've been our go to trusted source on all things Covid. Thanks so much Dr. Campbell.
Thanks Dr. C. Been watching your COVID 19 series. Thought I"d branch out to your other videos. Found this straight forward info about prostate probs that I can use to explain to my 81 year old Dad, with recent diagnosis of prostate issues.
Dr.John... sincere thanks for taking the time to make your excellent / informative videos. One's presently 59 years old and intermittently suffering with 'urgency' and / or a 'reduced flow'. Having watched your video on this topic, one suspects that a visit to ones GP might be in order.
What a great teacher! I taught for several years and see so many so call teachers in the system. Simple. Go from know to unknown. Especially he did not use the plastic body parts.
Like a boxer or a dancer, light footed, in key to mental acceptance for the viewer and crystal clear. Did I say thanks a million for the, by times, hilarious way of presenting the facts? Great video and I'll keep it in mind for the next 45 years, or so. Thanks and enjoy!
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge , you never failed to make a complex subject simple and easy to understand. I enjoyed all your sessions , well done !
I find there are two wonderful thing about getting old: 1) There is always something to talk about. (Health) 2) ALL the ladies are getting more beautiful.
I suffer from BPH and had just accepted the problems as part of aging .After having a scan to look for prostate cancer it was noticed my bladder was enlarged and I was retaining lots of urine.I then got sent to learn how to self catherterise to empty my bladder twice a day (was still carrying 350 to 400 ml after going to the toilet)then got booked in for the TURP op and since having that my life has been transformed and I can now urinate the same as when I was 20 ,no more dribbles and straining.Great thanks to the specialist, surgeons, nurses and staff at Bradford hospitals for getting me through a problem I had accepted and making my quality of life much much better.
As a woman, whose father died of prostate cancer, brother just having it removed, other brother having the dreaded biopsy operation, my fathers two brothers having their prostates removed and all male family members getting tested yearly, it’s appreciated that you are educating men to know what is happening to their bodies and how to care for themselves. And it is also appreciated and interesting for me to understand male health issues like this, to be able to talk to my partner and son about this and direct them to your videos. Thanks Dr C 🙏
Thank you, Dr. Campbel. I had these prostate problems until 3 month ago. I took a double dose of Saw Palmetto and a double dose of Nettle Root for two weeks and after a few days I slept all night without the need to go to the toilet! After the two weeks I continued with both products and now I also have a normal pee frequency all day: not more than 3 times a day. (that was before I started with saw palmetto and nettle root every hour and during the night at least 3 to 4 times "in a hurry". ) My age is 77 !.
I started a Reishi mushroom supplement from Costco as a health tonic, and noticed greatly improved BPH symptoms in 3 months. Wasn't taking it for the prostate, but I noticed that Reishi is an ingredient in a prostate supplement promoted by Walmart. Further investigation I found several medical journals articles confirming Reishi is indeed beneficial for the prostate.
@@hansmolders1066 The oft used term "toxic masculinity" is more made-up commie speak. Being masculine is perfectly natural, as is being feminine. Your boss may be an asshole but that's nothing to do with his level of masculinity.
Diagnosed in 2009 with prostate cancer, Gleason 6, at age 70. Chose active surveillance with no drastic treatment. Last year in June was told that my cancer had resumed growth and was advised to seek treatment. Underwent HIFU (High Frequency Focal Ultrasound) in Sarasota, Florida, USA. In and out in one day with zero pain. Am currently being monitored and so far, so good. Will turn 81 in May.
While I have, so far, been lucky in having only very mild symptoms of BPH--slightly reduced flow, less effective 'pinch off' causing a bit more dribble and occasional disturbance to sleep (if I am woken by another cause--noisy neighbours!-- in the early morning I need to urgently urinate before I can return to sleep but if undisturbed will happily sleep without problems). What I was unlucky enough to suffer a couple of years ago was acute prostatitis which is by far the most painful condition I've ever had. Not only was it painful on urination, as we would all expect, but it was painful to sit or even lie down. It took the most judicious use of pillows to prevent pressure when sitting and very careful positioning when trying to sleep. Unfortunately, the normal movements in sleep inevitably woke me in agony; I didn't have an undisturbed night for weeks. Even with heavy duty painkillers I was laid low for nearly a month. The antibiotics came through after that and the pain gradually subsided. Don't want that again!
Thank you again Dr. John. Your brief and informative videos have been of great influence in leading me to pursue a healthy preventive regime to keep my health intact. I've had this problem for the last 10 or 12yrs. I'm 64 now. I have a background in natural physical health as a Retired fitness trainer. Natural supplements were a large part of that. I've learned what works for me and what does not. The combination of Saw Palmetto 250mg and Pygeum 350mgs twice per day works very well for me. It's cheap enough and I buy it with regularity to cause a fairly good supply for the tough times. When I have been at my worst it typically takes 2 days to restore a mostly full flow. Others it may take longer. I also take it with a full glass of water. I'm not saying anyone should try it. I'm just saying it's what has worked best for me. Do your own research and make an informed decision.
Excellent video. I was diagnosed with BPH when 55 and tried medication.By 60 it had gotten bad enough I needed a TURP. That was 2 years ago and all is well.I highly recommend all men find a GOOD urologist and don't wait too long!! It's not as scary as it all sounds. Eat well..keep fit and see you dr. at least once a yr.
Wow. I'm 56 and have all the symptoms of BPH. You described everything FAR more lucidly and comprehensively than my own overworked, hurried GP. I now have a good understanding of the dribbling, peeing at night, and urge incontinence. Thank you!
@@bekabeka71 , herbal remedies, such as saw palmetto seem to be helpful. But if urine blockage becomes more acute, I would think surgery might be advised. I have not heard of any treatment, yet, which would actually shrink the prostate down to its normal size. Perhaps, one day, with the advancement of medical science.
@@Ottee2 we’re so behind time right? Nothing really has become advanced when it comes to surgeries or avoiding surgery. I heard edging is very bad for men’s health is that right? And also heard that those who are sexually active don’t get prostate problems even at old age.
@@bekabeka71 , Yes, it would be great to get more advanced therapies for the prostate, given that every male on the planet will eventually have problems with it. Thoroughly appreciate all the COVID updates - the voice of reason! Have also been interested in watching your other videos, specially ones related to prostate cancer as my husband was diagnosed with it 19 years ago when he was 50-years old. High PSA numbers initially, followed by biopsy and then prostatectomy. A year after that PSA levels started rising again and followed then protocol of radiation treatment; short period of zero PSA, but after further rising PSA levels was advised to proceed with hormone treatment - that continued for about a year or so before electing to cease treatment due to adverse side affects. The entire treatment plan was undertaken in USA which on reflection may have been too aggressive but you do rely on the doctors to guide you in the right direction. Having had no discernible PSA for a few years, my husband’s recent test was recorded at 4 - not having a prostate it should ideally be zero. He’s having a hard time getting this across to his GP in the UK and wondered if there’s any advice about further diagnostics or treatment.
Thank you Dr John . At 67 years i,m pleased to know this is part of the normal ageing process as i have some of the symptoms . I have been checked and found negative for prostrate cancer . At 47, I had multiple new health issues crop up. I fly long flights frequently so hemorrhoids is a cruel fate. Hyperthyroidism on my dads side, hypothyroidism on my moms. I've had BPH for a few decades now. For most of that time saw palmetto kept things on an even keel. I also have ha edema in my legs and was prescribed HTZ and Potassium to counteract HTZ' from stripping out all the potassium and the resulting muscle soreness. Recently the benign part became a bit less benign. At about this time my DR told me I could stop taking the HTZ if I wanted. I did so and also discontinued the potassium. After a few weeks the urgency increased to I took more saw palmetto even that was not enough. I also noticed my leg muscles were geting sore and that would sometimes wake me at night After some though I bought some 550mg Potassium supplements and that seems to have fixed things and I was able to go back to the old saw palmetto dosage. I suspect the potassium effect on muscles also includes the sphincter that controls the flow of urine. The joys of getting older . . .
I have had BPH for about 4 years (I am 63) and my annual ultrasound scan showed growth to 75 mm then 115 mm (normal size is 35mm - about the size of a walnut). The doc advised medication but warned of potential side effects of; erectile disfunction, lack of ejaculation due to reversing of the ejaculate (where it goes back into the bladder and is peed out) and reduction of libido. I told him that was a no-no and I preferred to avoid prescription drugs and could he advise any natural remedies to try first. He said some of his medical colleagues with BPH use a natural product branded “U-Go” which I have used for the last couple of years (costs about €24 per month). I also adjusted my diet to avoid processed foods and definitely removed sugar as much as possible. I exercise with a 5-10 km fast walk (with 25% jog) two or three times a week. The result is that my prostate has reduced to 60mm, my bladder fully empties most of the time (it was empty at my last ultrasound) and I can sleep over 6 hours without needing to pee. I still feel the urge quite often during the day but I probably drink too much coffee and water. I try to avoid coffee after 6pm and just a small glass of water around 9pm. A very manageable improvement. Hope this helps.
Here in Spain they check every year if your over 50yo. I've had enlarged prostrate for2/3 years, ( I'm 66), the urologist said not to worry, when it becomes a problem, we have medication. Last Dec, I had a check, he said come back in 6 months, and I've noticed a change in flow, and increase in frequency. I decided on a multiple attack. Exercise 15/20 mins every day on a cross trainer, cut out dairy products, ( estrogen producing), a daily natural supplement specifically for prostrate problems, (added to the vitamins I take ). The natural tablets are available most pharmacists and health food shops. I also sprinkle my cereal with both pumpkin or calabaza seeds, plus flax seeds. Been doing this for two or three months, but in last week or so, my flow is improving, and frequency decreasing. For instance, my regular Sunday night playing pool with buddies I had two mugs of tea, and two cans of a soft drink (no added sugar ), and went 4 hours without needing to pee ! So I'm looking forward to seeing the doctor in July, hopefully he can tell me the prostrate has either not grown or is shrinking ! Good luck to all.

I started having this problem at age 46. By the time I was 56 I was waking up once or twice per night to go to the washroom “urgently”. I came across information about fixing this with zinc. I started taking 100 mg of zinc per day. 50 mg after lunch and 50 mg after supper. What a difference. It’s been two years and although it took two months before I noticed a change, I no longer get up in the middle of the night. I can sleep right through until morning. It may not work for all men but zinc worked wonders for me. It’s worth a try. It can’t hurt! I’ll bet most men will notice a difference after taking zinc for 2 months. Some may need more than 100 mg per day. I don’t know what the limit is. You’d need to check that. Zinc can cause an upset stomach if you don’t take it after eating. To start it would be good to take only 50 mg per day for 2 weeks before jumping up to 100 mg.
My brother had BPH. He went to a urologist at IU School of Medicine in Indianapolis who used a homium laser to resect the enlarged prostate. Outpatient surgery. Nearly painless. A huge success! You may want to look into it if you need surgery. Only a few docs around the US are doing it this way last I knew. Not sure about Europe.
Just had a TURP it's made a tremendous difference. I live in Leeds and have been monitored for a number of years but the last 6 months became painful and urgent just as you described.
After thinking about it a little I must express a little concern about your description of the TURP procedure, I believe you may have understated how it is carried out. I was taken to an annexxe of the operating theatre and asked to sit on the side of the operating table, the aneasthetist and his nurse explained how they would carry out the spinal block, THEY LIED, the nurse said she would spray my back with an antiseptic skin aneasthetic; it might be cold, She then hosed my back down with water piped straight from the Artic, "Oh that's good she said, most people flinch", too right I didn't flinch I was bloody frozen and incapable of movement. Her Master then said he was going to give my back a local anastheatic, well it was only marginally worse than the dentist probing my jaw with a syringe, he then said we'll wait a few minutes for it to work, a few seconds later I receive a six inch nail to the spine, "Do you feel any pain?" he gently enquires knowing full well I've gone into terminal shock, "We'll give a little bit of oxygen to revive you." he gloats. By this point I'm paralysed from the chest down, so they drag me round and throw me into some warped position as though I'm about to give birth. Then the Spanish Inquisitor moves in, nobody expects the spanish inquisition and I certainly didn't expect what came next. A nurse erects a screen across my stomach preventing my direct view of the operation but ensuring I can see it reflected in all it's bloody glory on the side of a stainless steel instruement trolley. The Inquisitor then plants himself like a gynacologist and bounces the theatre trolley around to position me for best access, he then thrust the hose of a jet wash down poor John Thomas and switches it on, at least I knew it was brand new 'cos the B&Q Karcher box was thrown in the corner, he then brings out some devilish tool to heat a carving knife to red heat with which he proceeds to thrust down the side of the 1" pressure pipe and carve out the inside of my prostate. I'll give him this; the slices were neater than when my Mother carved the Sunday Joint. After an hour of enjoying my predicament he suddenly yelled, "Bloody Hell, is that the time." stood up, said to me " that was a big one, I'll see you in three months." and buggered off at high speed. A spare trolly was then brought to the side of the operating trolley and I was asked if I could move myself across to the other trolley, I was paralysed from my chest down, I couldn't bloody move! So three female shot putters came to one side and heaved, I rolled like an empty tin can across both trolleys only to bounce back off a safety rail into the middle of the second trolley. I was then hauled off to a ward for an overnight stay, I'd starved from midnight till 5p.m. and all I got was two ham and cheese sandwiches, hardly enough to replace the two gallons of blood I'd lost. BUT I did get two bourbon biscuits, so thank you St James Leeds. You have been warned, pre order the sandwiches.
Thanks for the well-delivered news, Sir. We don't like it, but there you have it. My Dad had this problem, fairly seriously, at 62. He was a big smoker, had cocktails a lot, ate lots of meat. I've been mostly vegetarian. Nearing 80, bph yes, but I can still sleep through the night so I figure I got another 10 or so years of life by being 95% vegetarian, drinking lots of water, especially a quart before breakfast, and peeing three times a morning! Fair trade off, I'd say.
I have seen two US doctors on youtube and they claim that a Keto diet would help. I'm not sure if that's necessarily vegetarian. Dr Eric Berg and KenDBerryMD
@@Carnabwth Yes, we watch the same videos, I'd say.. I'm not yet sold on consuming animal fats. My main defense in not switching to Keto is that I never stopped meat on purpose; I simply no longer crave it. I grew up in a family that fasted on Wednesdays and Fridays, with no meat on these days. So I do what feels good. I have a semi-vegetarian diet and eat brown, not white rice. But at my age, 79, as Dr. Campbell notes, most men (in the Western Hemisphere) have overgrown prostate glands. So we watch and keep track of things.
I am 74 and in good health . Non smoker and drinker all my life. I have been taking an aspirin a day since I was 30. I don't if my good health has been luck, genetics or life style. Just a baby aspirin every other day since I turned 70 . Love your videos !
I think it would have been hilarious if you drank some of that at the end of the presentation. Good lecture, thanks Your corona-virus updates are very useful. I did enjoy the description of the Washington man's symptoms and treatment. It's good to know a bit about what happens if this might happen to me or people around me.
Thanks for your humorous, fun, and for encouraging understanding of all things "medical." I shared and quoted from your videos on the lies of the Coronaviruses many times. As to this one, I am a kidney/pancreas transplant recipient of 13 years, and at 68 years old (tomorrow), I know of the struggle to get the lemonade into the cup, BUT, the use of Saw Palmetto has reversed it completely, and to such an extent that my kidney physician began to ask about it at every visit. March 24th, when I saw him last, he confided, I have started advising others to try this natural product, and says that results are very interesting, in a positive way. When someone gives me lemons, I can really make the lemonade flow! Thanks again for all you do.
I was just 70 when BPH caused difficulties. Digital examination was not positive. PSA was always below 7 and under 5 at 50. A TURP was done and biopsy demonstrated a 3+4=7 Gleason score. MRI, after the fact (TURP) showed large tumor on the right lobe. This was accidentally seen after TURP. Digital exams are not very effective in diagnosis of cancer. Just a FYI.
Before I had had a vasectomy I had no idea what was involved and what changes I would experience. I was interested to note after the operation that there wasn't a vas deferens.
I'm 58 and have just a blood test , absolutely nothing detected(or any diabetic issues either)so it's mildly enlarged and having heard the sound effects I'm off to the loo! Still, a very useful vlog.
I watched a video with Russell Brand where you talked about the placebo and nocebo affects. In this video you said that all men will have these prostate issues if they live long enough. I'm concerned that since I'm 63 years old without these issues and since I consider you a good source of medical information, I may develop these issues due to the nocebo affect.
This is very useful and interesting. Would also like some discussion on prostatitis Suffered from this on and off (just recovering from a bout right now I hope) and it is very concerning when you get it. Urine flow stays good but you have this discomfort... In my experience paracetamol seems to calm the discomfort (rather than aspirin or ibuprofen) but your mileage may vary. Can you do a discussion on that one Dr John
I'm on Tamsulosin Hydrochloride and Finasteride. The former works by relaxing the muscles in the bladder and prostate so I can pee more easily. And Finasteride, a common treatment for male pattern baldness, also has the long term effect of shrinking the prostate, thereby relieving pressure on the urethra. So far so good, the combination works well for me and there is no sign of my needing surgery - yet. Your experience may vary and these drugs could be inappropriate in your case.
Eventually it will become less and less effective. Look into the PAE procedure. There are some cancer warnings with Finasteride. You can get off of both of these drugs rather safely.
Finasteride is also Proscar, used for male pattern hair loss - 1/4 of 5 mg tab every 2 days. Someone told me after he started taking them he diveloped nocturine, but his GP had said Proscar could not be the reason.
@@jackieblewett641 My dosage is 1 off 5mg per day. Obviously to have the desired effect in my case the dose has to be much higher than required for baldness treatment. No significant increase in nocturia.
When a man's testosterone is at his highest (teens-20's) there's little to no chance of enlarged prostrate, but when a man reaches his 50's and his testosterone is greatly diminished, we say enlarged prostrate is due to testosterone. I think it's more a variety of factors as opposed to testosterone. Lifestyle and diet are more likely the cause than a greatly decreased testosterone level.
Thank you for this. Some years ago I was referred to an urologist and a 12 needle biopsy was done. Nothing malignant. On the debriefing I was told to live with it as it is normal. Also said that I have no stretches on the bladder, but if that can happen if I apply too much pressure. His advice was to be patient. Sit on the toilet and relax. Another interesting thing, for me, is that you have a voluntary and involuntary urinary duct valve. The easiest way to describe this: You urinate before the off-load, and as you relax, your bladder gives much more. I'm happily living with this condition, being informed by persons like you.
dr berg advised men to avoid dairy and sugar; makes total sense; ingesting the hormonal fluid from another species, a large female animal that has been injected with chemicals to make it MORE estrogenetic to give MORE milk I cannot see HOW any male of ANY other species ingesting THAT hormonal fluid can avoid problems to their OWN hormonal system which includes the prostrate gland. makes TOTAL sense!!
My experience as a 35 year old that has suffered prostate issues for over 20 years. I was raised on soy milk thickened with carrageenan. Took me decades to realize this but cutting carrageenan out of my diet completely has given me almost normal function back, perhaps in the 50 year old range. In my teens there were times when I couldn't urinate for days. Nothing would come out at all. Doctor put it down to me being shy of course. More recently I've discovered the benefits of NAC supplements which appears to have me on track for a 40+ year old's prostate which would be amazing.
Soy = estrogen supplements. Not helpful for males, not healthy for women either. Even eating animals/eggs that have been fed soy has negative health effects .
@@qwanyin6423 soy has phytoestrogen in it, or plant-based estrogen, which hasn't scientifically been shown to cause significant hormonal changes in men or women when consumed in regular amounts.

Your covid-19 vids introduced me to you and ran across this. I'm enjoying the pleasures of an enlarged prostate. Been trying Pygeum the last month. It seems to be helping, I don't wake multiple times a night having to urinate any longer.
I have been suffering from this for a while now. One thing I have noted though as I've dealt with back pain is that Cannabis seems to either reduce the swelling a bit or just relaxes me enough to get passed the hesitancy John talks about, not sure which. When I smoke, I noticed that my stream is better and I seem to empty the bladder pretty good.
You never tells us the reason behind BPH; I have read many articles that the consumption of sugar and also refined carbohydrates make the prostate enlarged. I have noticed on myself that ever since I am on a ketogenic diet the symptoms have reduced considerably. Can you comment on this?
@@GarfieldTheater It has been since January for me, and so far so good. Not sure if it is a permanent fix or not, but nothing to stop me from going in again if needed. I am still off the meds though.
@@Jack-2day I delayed the post op MRI due to the Covid, but during a break in between surges, I got the MRI. Result was no visible shrinkage of the prostate however flow, although slowly becoming worse is still better than before the procedure. I still think that the PAE is a good option but there are risks and side effects that should be considered. In my case, they indicated that no second PAE is appropriate. So sooner or later it will be robotic surgery to remove the organ entirely. In the meanwhile, I have returned to an occasional as necessary usage of Flomax and cipro to resolve periodic flare-ups. No way to know how many years this will suffice.
Dr John, thought you might find interesting. My doc put me on MetFormin as preventative cause insulin was on rise. a month or two on metformin my BPH has mostly disappeared. i think inflammation from insulin brought on my BPH.

The prostate can also sometimes grow into the bladder, reducing capacity. The popular drug alfuzosin leads to reduced blood pressure which can cause dizziness and tiredness. Finasteride and some substances with similar action can delay the growth, gaining up to ten years. A side-effect of TURP can be retrograde ejaculation.
Please see: www.priory.com/med/saw.htm and www.nih.gov/news-events/nih-research-matters/no-effect-saw-palmetto-urinary-symptoms - to summarise; clinical trials show that it's no more effective than a placebo, at treating prostate problems, but can reduce PSA - which is a problem, because it makes it harder to detect prostate cancer. (Not a doctor, but those references are written by doctors and clinical researchers) This is taken from that first link: "However 5-alpha reductase inhibitors will reduce the PSA levels by average of 50% after 6-12 months of use, invalidating this study on PSA. Consequently of most significance is the lack of well planned "long term clinical studies" concerning the effects of saw palmetto on "lowering the PSA" levels after 6-12 months! Any interference with PSA makes this test useless as a diagnostic tool for prostate cancer. " The rest of that page has some relevant advice about going on a low fat diet, instead.
