Protan's experience in Green roofs goes back to its Nordic inheritance of supplying waterproofing materials for traditional turf roofs across Scandinavia since 1985.
Green roofs are increasing in popularity in the UK for recreational, aesthetic and environmental purposes, particulary as focus increases on the Carbon footprint. Protan's PROGREEN roofing systems offer significant benefits to the environment and to a building's performance.
PROGREEN roofs are suitable for new build and refurbishment projects and can cater for the requirements of any roof size, from large commercial to domestic projects. The pitch of the roof and the load bearing capacity of the structual deck will determine the type of green roof system that is most suitable.
1. PROGREEN Extensive Roof System
2. PROGREEN Turf Roof System
3. PROGREEN Intensive Roof System
Benefits of a Green Roof:
SUD's benefits in the improved managment of rainfall
Increases the usable space of the building
Protects the building against the effects of rapid temperature changes
Improved fire protection
Improves the building's thermal and acoustic performance
Reduction of the heat island effect particulary in built-up urban areas
Visually attractive with a range of flower and foilage
Additional habitat for wildlife
Local bio-diversity benefits
PROGREEN Membrane:
Developed specifically for green roof applications (excluding intensive roofs which use Protan GG membrane)
The membrane can be loose laid on all green roof systems unless the ballast weighs less than 80kg/m2 or if the roof is to be left exposed for a period of time when it must be mechanically fixed or if the pitch is in excess of 15o.
Accredited to FLL testing on root resistance, the PROGREEN membrane offers a fast and safe way of covering large areas without the use of adhesives. This also ensures the system is fully recyclable when the roof is to be replaced.
FLL Guidelines:
The FLL have been working on standards for green roof technology for 25 years. For many years, these guidelines have been the only source of reliable information for green designers. Their 'Guidance for Planning, Execution, and Upkeep of Green-Roof Sites' reflects the acknowledged state-of-the-art technology.
Although the guidelines do not give solutions for all green roof problems, it has become the recognised industry standard for the construction of reliable high quality green roofs.
Sustainable Urban Drainage:
SUDS is becoming increasingly important in terms of planning. Its aim is to ensure rainfall is managed across all areas of construction, particuarly green roofs.
The sedum or wildflower mat and the growing medium soaks up the rain, significantly reducing run-off and consequently reducing the risk of flooding. The rain is filtered naturally through the system build-up and is released slowly back into the watercourse at ground level.
All of Protan's PROGREEN systems contributes to the SUDS requirements, particulary the Turf Roof System which has a minimum of 170mm depth of growing medium.
