Protect and Survive - Action After Warnings

"Protect and Survive" was the title of a series of booklets and a Public Information Film series produced by the British government during the late 1970s and early 1980s, dealing with emergency planning for a nuclear war.
The purpose of the programme was to provide members of the public with instructions on how to protect themselves and survive a nuclear attack. If such an attack had been deemed likely by the Government during any period of international crisis, a copy of the 'Protect and Survive' booklet would have been distributed to every home in the UK, and the films would have been transmitted on domestic television. The booklet and the films detailed a series of steps to be undertaken by the public to improve their chances of survival during a nuclear attack. These included the recognition of attack warning, fallout warning, and all-clear signals, the preparation of a home "fallout room" and the stockpiling of food, water, and other emergency supplies.
'Protect and Survive' was simply designed, easy to understand, and similar to the advice of most other emergency planning authorities of the time. In the opinion of some contemporary critics, however, the 'Protect and Survive' films were deeply and surprisingly fatalistic in tone

Patrick Allen recorded the voice over at StageSound(London)Ltd. in Covent Garden. I was the assistant sound engineer under Dick Warman. Patrick recorded the whole lot - plus other stuff that I have never heard again - in just two short days. Most of it in one or two takes. He was appearing in a West End play at the time so had to fit the work in around his other commitments. The special sounds came from the BBC (probably the Radiophonic Workshop) with which StageSound had close ties

This is way scarier and more depressing than any horror movie! Having watched "Threads" and "The Day After" it is clear to me the best is to get killed in the blast and not having to endure the true definition of hell on earth the survivors always do.

Once, back in 84, when Threads had just been shown and things looked edgy, they tested the siren in my suburb. It was on top of the library. I was out with friends sitting in the sun and we all just froze. We didn't seek shelter or anything. We just sat staring round-eyed at each other as four minutes ticked by. Then we figured no bombs were coming that day and all relaxed.

My best friend's father was a founding engineer of the local nuclear power plant. Their house was barely 2 miles from the plant. When people would ask, "Aren't you afraid to live so close to it? What if there was an explosion?", she'd tell them what her dad told her: The closer, the better. If anything did happen, they wouldn't even have time to say, "What the f---?". Better to go instantly, than agonizingly over days or weeks.

Much like the "Duck & Cover" film in the US, this advice is for those further away from ground zero. Closing light colored curtains or painting over the windows with white paint will reflect much of the flash, so as to avoid burnination inside your home. Now, if you're close enough that the wood ignites instantly, then, yeah, closing the curtains is just p***ing in the wind. Again, this sort of thing is to reduce casualties further away from ground zero.

the only time they did make the airwaves was on a bbc tv show called PANORAMA back in 1980 ish.... the presenter said that this would be the only time they would be shown unless there was a real danger of world war three taking place.... thank god it never happened! oh and one of the clips did make a apperance on "THREADS"(bbc tv..shown in 1981 on bbc tv)

Just saw this yesterday as it was running in one of the exhibitions at the imperial war museum Manchester. It was scary as a kid of the 70's seeing this sort of stuff. As mentioned by others, this was purely just to give people something to do and ultimately was completely hopeless. Its almost laughable the suggestions made in an attempt to survive. Lying on the ground with a jacket over your head or sheltering under a table surrounded by suitcases and mattresses?

Ref the curtains comments:- Heat will set them on fire before they are blown in with the blast wave & even if they dont catch fire, how many curtains can withstand high speed debris & the pressure of a nuclear blast? These films were designed to give the masses some hope for survival, the reality is that you would have no chance & the best place to be would be directly under the first one to go off.

How naive we must have been to think any of that information would save you life. Don't come out for at least 2 days!, close windows and curtains! lay on the ground!...lol It should have said "If you hear the attack sound stick your head between your legs and kiss your arse goodbye" for all the good that public information film would do.

i love the idea people were supposed to believe some doors and a ridiculously massive amount of luggage will protect you from a nuclear bomb. The fact all your doors are off their hinges probably makes the fallout risk greater as it makes its way freely through the house. They shouldn't have bothered telling people so that in the case of a bomb, only the strongest, cleverest and most inventive people survived, thus rebuilding a better society.

It's curious that several posters here apparently "remember" this being broadcast on TV. In fact, it was *never* broadcast, but very short sanitised clips were definitely featured in topical programmes of the day such as World In Action and Panorama. This particular film wasn't de-classified until the 90s. It was most definitely *not* scheduled after Rainbow!

The attacking country would strategically detonate low to mid yield warheads in the upper atmosphere, (above centres of population) theoretically disabling a huge area. Also, the defending country's communication/broadcasting/surveillance satellites would have been disabled/destroyed in the first attack wave. Then the attacking country would destroy military targets, then, ultimately destroy industrial/civilian targets as well as centres of mass population.

Apparently these films were made but not to be shown unless the prospect of a nuclear confrontation became a real threat. Why then do I seem to remember them being broadcast? I've asked a few other people I know, and they remember them too, mainly because of the haunting music at the end of each film written by Roger Limb.

the best thing to do in that attack would be, just get as far away from the blast as you can. i.e. if the blast is in london and youre in like, essex, head as far north as you can
@divinedegenerate
@divinedegenerate 13 лет назад
@planejunky You probably remember them from the harrowing film 'Threads' which dramatised the period leading up to, and after, nuclear attack... that was the first time the public got to see these films which, as you rightly note were only to be shown when an attack became likely. In the film, they were broadcast continuously in the days leading up to the attack on all TV and radio stations... nothing like terrifying the population in an already scary time, after all :)

The world is more dangerous than ever and having at least a basic knowledge of civil defense, radological protection, improvised fall-out shelters and having the ability to survive on one's own supply of food and water are all needed as much in 2010 as they were in 1950.

@123aycaramba It could save you from major burns from the initial flash of the nuclear blast. A person could be burned badly from the flash of a nuclear explosion even if they are far enough away not to be killed by it. Even something as thin as a curtain could shield you at certain distances. Of course, if you're within a certain range of the blast, it won't do any good to draw the curtains.
@Vladcara

They'll slow it a bit. Not much, true, but if you're far enough away from the impact site, that tiny amount could be enough to save your life. Anyway, these were produced 40 years ago. Give them a brake if their particle physics wasn't quite up to scratch

yardelli, I was in grade school in the US in the 1970's. At least where I grew up, in a rural community, they didn't discuss nuclear war that much, even though it was in printed literature on emergency procedures. When I was about 10, I asked my Teacher what this was about. She turned pale and refused to discuss the matter.

A NUDET is survivable if you are far enough away from ground zero, but if I were so near a primary target where a multi stage thermonuclear warhead was going to detonate within four minutes, the probability of survival would be so low and the risk of horrific injury so high even if you did survive, I would likely head to the closest point to probable ground zero. Just a flash, and you wouldn't feel a thing....better than roasting alive in a half baked shelter that will be turned into a furnace.
