The protein C test measures the amount of protein C in your blood.
The function of protein C depends on the anti-clotting proenzyme of vitamin K. It circulates in the plasma and is activated to form protein C. This active form acts as an anticoagulant and inactivates coagulation factors V and VIII.
Protein C prevents blood clots. Normally, your body forms clots in response to any injury or bruise. If protein C levels in your blood are too low, blood clots will form too often, which can block blood vessels. The clot can form anywhere in the body and travel to the lungs. If the clot reaches your lungs, it can cause a life-threatening condition called pulmonary embolism.
If your protein C levels are above normal, there is no risk of any problem.
Protein C deficiency is a genetic disorder. Sometimes this deficiency occurs due to other reasons in life. The deficiency can be mild or severe. People who have mild symptoms may never develop life-threatening clots. However, serious clotting problems may occur in the following conditions:
Surgery
Pregnancy
Certain infections
Prolonged inactivity
Whether protein C deficiency is hereditary or acquired later in life, this test can also help find out how to prevent clots.
Why is a protein C test done?
Doctors may usually recommend this test in case of a thrombotic (clotting) condition such as thromboembolism. This test is usually recommended in the following conditions:
Blood clots in people under the age of 50
Excessive clotting
Clot formation in unusual places such as in the blood vessels of the kidney, liver or brain
Newborns suspected of having a serious clotting disorder such as purpura fulminans or disseminated intravascular coagulation
Family history of protein C deficiency
Family history of clotting
Since it is a genetic disorder, it is also used as a screening test in people who have a close family member with protein C deficiency.
This test is also done to check if a woman is having recurrent miscarriages.
