For both beginners and experienced aquarists, deciding whether to run a skimmer can be a crucial decision impacting the health and maintenance of your marine ecosystem. Join us as we delve into the pros and cons of using a skimmer in your saltwater aquarium.
Skimmers, also known as protein skimmers, are renowned for their ability to remove organic compounds and other pollutants from the water column. We'll explore the benefits of skimmers, including improved water quality, reduced nutrient buildup, and prevention of harmful algae growth.
However, skimmers may not be suitable for all aquarium setups. Factors such as tank size, bioload, and the presence of sensitive species may influence whether a skimmer is necessary or beneficial for your aquarium. We'll discuss scenarios where running a skimmer may be essential and instances where it may be optional or even unnecessary.
Join us as we weigh the advantages and potential drawbacks of incorporating a skimmer into your saltwater aquarium, providing you with the information needed to make an informed decision tailored to your specific tank requirements.

@@reefrookies further to my original reply,,I have a 130+ gallon tank,,only 11 fish in there,,but probably around a thousand zoas and lots of other corals,,the waste created by the fish is valuable to the zoas especially..when I did run the skimmer,,I maybe got a fluid once per week.there is massive aeration do to the sump and return pump..hope this helps.

I like skimmers I had one on my 180 gallon tank but i had another 45 and refugium on the same system so it was close to a 240 gallon system, also had another 75 gallon for years with out a skimmer, but it only had 3 fish in it. good video nice advice

I definitely prefer using them on my tanks as well. I always have better results with them than without.

i got used to turning off the skinners too at feeding could run it every other day, if i ran it to much my corals, would be effected for sure, you can oxygen to is so thats good too

OK I don't use a protein skimmer as a feel it takes out both good and bad protein/nutrients, which you then have to re add good nutrients back into the water column..., so why take stuff out only to add it back in ? I don't get it

Skimmers rarely remove ALL the nutrients from the tank. Its no different than any other form of filtration. It should be properly sized to keep the tank in balance. Generally the tank is continually creating dissolved organics that become nitrates and phosphates, so removal of SOME of these is essential to keep the numbers from going too high. Sure, its possible to overskim a tank, but its not the norm if the skimmer is sized correctly, but they arent required at all. Along with that the benefits to oxygenation and pH control outweigh the cons of running one for me.

@@reefrookiesam coming back to marine fish/reef keeping after a break of 7 years, but I was keeping various sized tanks over 15-18 years without use of any protein skimmers, am watching videos to see what has changed in the 6-7 years I haven't been able to keep tanks

@@AlexGhostDragonUK the basics are all still the same, we just have more and better products now.

I rarely had any issues with my water quality other than pH struggled to keep above 8 -8.1 and never used additives at all to manually increase anything, just well filtered and plenty of surface adjurtation via powerheads
