He backed off because he THOUGHT it would help out his friends who were facing serious sentences for defending themselves. Also let's not kid ourselves, he also left to save his own skin. Any university that receives public funding is legally obligated to enforce constitutional rights on their campus. There is no decision or choice for the school here. If they canceled the event, the school would be in legal trouble.
