From amazing landscapes, tropical views and large cities, this place is insane. They've got a great culture as well. 100% recommended. Cape Town is a must by the way.

Mark 1.15 15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel. 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. Hebrews 11:6 6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. Jesus

Yeah. But he was completely wrong about the Northern Cape. Whites don't make up 40% of the population, but rather 7.1%! There is simply no region of SA where the white populace is that high. The majority in the NC is black African and Coloured. A lot of Northern Cape Coloureds are actually former Tswanas that speak Afrikaans as a primary language. (reclassified under the old system) So maybe the fact that 53.8% of the NC population speaks Afrikaans caused the confusion. Also if Will Smith (and even Beyonce) spoke Xhosa or Tswana no one would say they are Coloured. Will Smith is darker than many Xhosas and Tswanas. LOL

Corrections: -Most people classify 4 main races in South Africa: Black, White, Coloured and Indian. 76.4% Black, 9.1% white, 8.9% coloured and 2.5% Indian or Asian. -Capital of the Free State is Bloemfontein, not "Blomfentein". It is Afrikaans for fountain (or spring) of flowers. Its pretty accurate as the Free State is hella dry and Bloemfontein is known as "The city of roses". There is a whole lot of flowers and gardens there as it is the Judicial Capital of RSA, a green spot in a dry province. -Coloured people, not "colored" :) We use UK spelling in South Africa, being a former colony and whatnot. Awesome video! Can't wait until you get to the S countries and South Africa is featured! This is my country :D

Great episode, as a South African and a South African history I'd say you got about 65-70% of things right - which is really good. The biggest mistake you made is about race, but that is super complicated. Basically South Africa has five recognised races that are the legacy of colonialism and apartheid. The British colonial government implemented a governing policy called "racialism" (and later "seperate development") where they believed people of different races and ethnicities should be governed by seperate laws. They created five racial catergories: white, black, coloured, Indian, and Chinese. These groups were then further sub-divided: whites into Afrikaans and "English" people (the "English" group has actually come to encapsulate all non-Afrikaans white people, and even includes a sizable Dutch and German community who moved to South Africa after WW2); Indian people were sub-divided into Hindus, Muslims, and Christians; and Coloured people were divided between Muslims and Christians, but also actually included most Khoisan people groups. "Chinese" people became the term used to define any East Asian person (except Japanese people, who were legally considered English whites) and were such a small group they were hardly recognised. Black people were divided into "tribes", however not all African people belonged to the larger groups you mentioned and many people were simply assigned tribes by the colonial government based of the dialect they spoke or the rough area where they lived (this gets more complicated with different groups). Race also wasn't simply about decent, a lot of it would rest on appearance based off scientific racism. If your race was ambiguous the government would conduct a series of tests and would reclassify people based off the result. For example, they'd conduct something called the pencil test, where they'd stick a pencil in your hair. If it fell out you were considered white, Indian, or Chinese (depending on other tests) and if it stayed in you were seen as black or coloured. Many families were torn apart by this system and we're still feeling the affects of it today. The other big mistake you made was more a problem with syntax than actually getting a fact wrong. The large Indian population in KZN were brought to work on sugar plantations during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, not after Ghandi practiced law there. But ja, overall a really good episode :)

I have lived in informal settlements and wealthier ones, all as a 'white'. Crime is bad, but it is crime, being 'white' has little to do with it, economic disparity is a much better indicator.

Most Coloureds in the Western Cape aren't from White/Black relationships. The primary sources (diaries kept by colonists and marriage registries), in the Cape Town archives, point towards them having South Asian as their most significant part of their background. White is also significant, but Black ancestry isn't nearly as significant as some would suggest.
@Waldemarvonanhalt
@Waldemarvonanhalt 5 лет назад
@@NuanceWithNiki I doubt it's any sort of intentional thing, considering that early settlers didn't have the foresight to predict how the country would be today, to want to "whitewash" their personal diaries or government records.
@Waldemarvonanhalt
@Waldemarvonanhalt 5 лет назад
Die slawemeisies wat in die Kaap gebore is, was besonder gewild: “They were the favourites of their mistresses, who took pride in seeing them well-dressed”. Sy grafsteen is opgerig by Zandvliet, Faure in 1699. “They are associated in every amusement, they share every act of tenderness with the white children” is aangeteken in ‘n Britse dokument. “And just as their forefathers volunteered to go forth against the Hottentots with assegais, so we know their services are needed against a common (black) enemy”, word daarby gevoeg."

Wrong! Coloured as a category and Malay (Asian) simply isn't the same thing. Malay may fall under the Coloured category but the majority of people categorized as Coloured are clearly African-Asian creoles. The number of African people re-categorized as Coloured in the 20th century in particular is significant. (which one would think is fairly obvious to anyone actually in South Africa)
@danianmay
@danianmay 4 года назад
@@agrid2608 I think he's referring more specifically to Cape Coloureds. Being one myself, I have Javanese heritage and the blue eyes of my German/Dutch/English heritage. There was previously (have not checked if it's still like that) a distinction between Cape coloureds, and coloureds from everywhere else. Also, may coloureds were re-catgorised as white back in the day - Which is how my grandmother lost contact with her cousins, as she was no longer able to see them. As for Cape Coloureds, the mix is predominantly Asian and European.
@agrid2608
@agrid2608 4 года назад
@@danianmay That represents only a portion of Cape Coloureds. An Asian-European mix makes up only a small part. Anyone in Cape Town can clearly see that the bulk consist of Asian-African mix, and reclassified blacks. The Indonesians mixing with blacks goes back centuries to the days of the Dutch East India company. Also people who were previously culturally Xhosa a few generations ago make up a large portion of people who are today integrally Cape Coloured. I think you and I both know that statistically a blue-eyed Coloured (or even one with skin that isn't some shade of brown) is firmly in the minority.

Hi Ryan, this is a little difficult to explain in Dutch at this stage. Firstly, everyone who is born in South Africa, are South Africans, so I am a South Africa. Seeing as I am from the Afrikaans-speaking culture within this country, I am called an Afrikaner (the name refers to the language I speak and not my skin colour). However, when referring to race in South Africa, I am a white/Caucasian/European African while the black people are called black/coloured or African. In our country, Afrikaner does therefore not refer to a race, but to the language group. I am 100% South African with my ancestry as German settlers. However, I cannot speak German. Because I visit the Netherlands on a regular basis for work, I can also (more or less) speak Dutch and it was easy to learn as it is similar to Afrikaans. In other words, when the Dutch people speak about Afrikaner, they refer to only the skin colour, but it also refers to the Afrikaans-speaking culture in our country. Not sure if all this makes sense, hahaha.

I’m only a quarter South African but I’m bloody well proud of that quarter. South Africa has a had a rough history worse than some other countries and has a few modern problems nowadays. Nep Nep I didn’t say the place was perfect, but I’m still proud. You can’t tell someone they can’t be proud to be Russian because the government and quite a few people are homophobic. I was born and raised in the U.K. I’m still proud of that even with brexit.

@Nep Nep The government has not openly stated that. There has been a lot of hysteria created through this propoganda, an an intentional misrepresentation of what the government DID say, so I'm afraid you're mistaken. I do, however, thank you for your concern for our farmers. The truth is, they are the safest people in our country with their murder rate being 3% of the murder rate which stands at 50 South Africans daily mostly urban and mostly black.
