As a member of the Gen Y/Millennial group, I feel you about the younger kids being triggered so easily. I became a Kpop fan in 2008 when a friend in college introduced it to me in my second year through Super Junior, TVXQ, and SHINee. Back then, nobody in my friend circle cared what anyone on the internet was saying about the artists. We just enjoyed listening to the music and watching the music videos or concerts for the choreo and hilarious interactions between members. I now work at a high school, and I can tell you that the vast majority of the students are sooooo triggered when anyone has any opinion that is different from theirs. Once I was in a classroom where they were supposed to be having a lively but respectful debate about something as simple as which theory they agree with that explained the disappearance of the crew of a US Navy ship back a hundred years ago, and they were horrible about being respectful and waiting their turn to talk and give their rebuttal. They thought they had to try to interrupt and jump down the speaker's throat with their own opinion, and these were juniors!!!!! Stuff like that and what you talk about in this video are reasons why I really never look at Twitter except for very specific things like my artists' posts, I only use Instagram to follow my favorite artists and look at the pictures they post (and then it's pretty hit or miss in terms of how often I actually look at them), I only use TikTok to watch my favorite artists post dance challenge videos or other funny short videos, I barely ever look at anything on Facebook unless I'm looking for something specific, and I do not have a Snapchat account (why should I share my every thought or action with the world? in general, no one gives two craps). Sometimes I wish I had more in common with my age group, but sadly as a 34 year old female who is single with no kids and a huge Kpop fan and scifi/fantasy/superhero nerd, I've lost most of what I had in common with my high school and college friends because most of them are married with kids and their families are their whole lives--those who were Kpop fans have basically ignored it's existence ever since starting a family. When I found out about Jonghyun it made me soooo mad at his crappy therapist who did nothing to actually help him--in his case, I don't think it had so much to do with hateful comments but more internal mental problems, even possibly something like a chemical or hormonal imbalance in the brain that went undiagnosed. For Sulli, I was heartbroken for her because of the hate she was getting from people for being a little different from the norm for a Kpop idol and actress. I think if she'd done what a few other Kpop artists have done in unplugging themselves from social media and doing other stuff it may have helped her see that what they were saying wasn't worth taking to heart. I think that was what Jungwoo of NCT did during the later half of 2019 when he took a break from activities with the group after a lot of people were giving him hate for things he had no control over and were decisions made by SM. He came back at the beginning of 2020 a much more confident person who I believe came to the conclusion that it didn't really matter what the haters said because he had decided himself that he was a worthy addition to NCT and was loved by those who really mattered--his family and his fellow NCT members.
People are WAY more sensitive, that is a fact, but saying second and first gen fans or people in older age groups, and especially KPOP fans were chill, is a lie. BLATANT LIE. It's almost funny remembering some of the stuff they were going on back then lol. Fans were much worse if you ask me, but social media were not as widespread and the fandoms weren't as big and diverse as they are today, thus why many times there were actual physical attacks. They were sending literal dangerous sh*t to people's and "rival" idiols' houses. People back then were as extreme as they are today, it is just easier for them now, bc of the internet.
@@NotAnotherAccount735 @maximilianosoto-kq5vi I wasn't talking about older KPop fans IN GENERAL, I specifically said "MY FRIEND CIRCLE" didn't care about rumors and such on the internet. It probably helped that all of us were IN COLLEGE, not high school, there were only about 5 of us at our small non-party private school (still paying for that education 10 years on), and we all lived in America, so it's kind of hard to send shit to the idols' houses in South Korea even if we wanted to, and none of us wanted to spew hate at groups/artists we weren't into so we just ignored their existence; why take time to do stupid shit like that when we were all worrying about our college classes' grades more than anything else precisely because we were spending so much money on them? Plus we were all multi-stans before that was even a word, we were all interested in other things besides KPop, like Japanese music, anime, manga, American TV shows like Hercules, Xena, and Dexter, etc. Our lives did NOT revolve KPop or around one specific KPop group/artist, and the super crazy fans everyone talks about the most are those whose lives DO revolve around one specific group/artist. If we're talking about Sasaengs, they've been an issue since probably the very beginning of Kpop in the late 1990s/early 2000s because there have been super-delusional "fans" since the beginning of popular music, and there have always been crazy fans in every generation (thinking especially of Beatles' fans in the 1960s, dang were they nuts from what I've seen in video footage of the time period). MY FRIENDS AND I did not participate in fanwars because it was a waste of our time when we could be doing something that actually helped our education or made us happy in other ways.

The fandoms as fandoms are very much the same in the way they interact and how easy it is to interact with other hardcore members of the fandom. You said that younger fans are getting triggered more easily and I can answer easily no, lol. Considering how many more people are involved with K-pop now, I would expect it to be worse than what it was in 2008. I remember back in 2010 some fans (especially bg fans) were freaking savage warriors about A NY THING. The fans are pretty much the same, most are chill, and some are crazy, but very loud. The thing is that now it is easier for them to be loud and also there are many MANY more fans in general since K-pop is not as niche as it was.

There are yt channels like Ploopy (that's the only channel I could name at the top of my head rn) who rehash the wild shit that went down in the earlier days of kpop. Moreover, I'm in a lot of nerd spaces too and the drama and fanwars in the 70s and 80s about ships, trekkies vs Star Wars fans, rankings of most powerful comic book villians and heroes, etc are no different from the fanwars of today. As you said, just the scale and magnitude of the discussions have changed. This video is so helpful and has so much compassion put into it. I love the internet, I am on it a lot because I genuinely love having conversations (no matter how mean and messy they can be tbh lol I don’t mind being insulted and will hold myself accountable if I am called out), but it’s important to remember the internet is just so much noise at the end of the day. I’ll defend my favs, but I don’t need to, my favs are going to be ok, EVERYONE’S favs are going to be ok, following their paper trail is cruel and meaningless.
Such a well thought out and presented video. I'm an older person who's been into Kpop since 2010 and I've definitely had to learn to pick my battles when it comes to online interaction. Brushing things off, or choosing your words - really thinking about how you want to represent yourself, and curating your timelines on social media is imperative as well. Growing up and all through my life I've always had friends of different ages so I suppose I'm more used to that, but I do agree ppl should mostly stick with their age range, while also remaining open to the influences and wisdom of others. We can all learn things every day of our lives. Anyway, well done.
As another mid-30s kpop fan, I think part of the reason that people don't think we exist is because we are (mostly) just getting on with our fan stuff in our own circles. I watch channels, barely comment, check instagram for idols i follow, and talk about kpop with my same age friends who like it in private chats. And i think that's how a lot of people my age do it - just gonna get on, buy stuff, maybe have a circle of contemporaries who are into kpop but not get too involved in what the kids are doing. I will say i do think it's important for young people to have friends outside of their age group! But i think there's a difference between having older friends who will help you out or educate you and - even well meaning - older strangers coming in to correct you when you're doing dumb shit. And this whole thing where the internet is just a public forum for everyone to comment on your stuff even when you're being a fool is so unhealthy. Nobody is meant to broadcast their every thought and action to thousands+ people, but we seem to have come to a point where people expect that if you have social media. Like, the number of times I've seen people dismiss others because "ugh, private account" is concerning, honestly. When did it stop being a good thing to want to have some control over who sees your life and thoughts?

I just saw this scam account yesterday I commented on one of the ktuber's community and what I saw after some 6-8 hours was this account commenting the same shit on every comment of mine
I hide his comments from my channel whenever I see accounts of his popping up. Can’t speak on behalf of other KTubers and whenever or not they’re doing anything to actively keep his comments off of theirs.
