Pruning a 60 year old Bloodgood Japanese maple

In this video I prune the oldest tree in our garden. An acer palmatum "Bloodgood" that is over 60 years old.
I prune the tree step by step in real time.
We removed it from its container back in 1992 and transplanted into our garden. It has not been pruned in all these years. There is limited sunlight reaching the tree with all the larger trees surrounding it so there is uneven growth at the crown (top) of the tree.
I trim and bring it back into a more balanced shape.

Whoa that tree is big. I have a blood-good JM in front of my property. It’s still Young. Only about 6’ tall. I’ll be doing selective pruning to keep It from getting too tall & wide. But for now it looks perfect.

Don't forget, the Bloodgood is one of the largest growing varieties of Japanese maples. Also, this is many years of growth in the garden. Selective pruning each year will definitely keep it at a lower height.

Thanks for the great video. May I ask how far away from the front porch shall I plant a ‘Bloodgood’ Japanese maple if I only want to keep the tree at 6‘ feet tall by trimming each year. Thanks.

The root system is quite small compared to other trees. I would say keep the tree 6' - 8' away from the porch. Also. the bloodgood is one of the largest growing varieties. As the Bloodgood ages it would require much more pruning then other varieties to keep it at a 6' height and may ultimately distort the look of the tree. You may want to keep it in a permanently in a container to keep it at a more manageable height of 6'. There are varieties that look similar to the bloodgood but have a much smaller footprint in size. The "Pixie" and the "Marjan" would both be good choices to plant in the ground
