Ask This Old House landscape contractor Roger Cook helps a homeowner prune his crabapple tree.

Time: 4 hours
Cost: $50
Skill Level: Moderate
Tools List for Pruning a Crabapple Tree:
Pruning saw [amzn.to/2mQG47N]
Pole saw [amzn.to/2mxtkTl]
Bypass pruners [amzn.to/2mxtKcn]
Pole pruners [amzn.to/2lgO0z0]
String [amzn.to/2mqugJi]
Grub hoe [amzn.to/2mZ2PGT]
Leaf rake [amzn.to/2mYCsAR]
Drill [amzn.to/2mSflaY]
Shopping List:
Mulch [amzn.to/2mTAWzO]
1/2 inch spade drill bit [amzn.to/2ltg2qO]
Steps:
1. A crabapple with brown leaves may have apple scab disease, a fungal infection.
2. Roger recommends removing any branches that are low enough to be bumped when mowing the lawn.
3. When removing a large branch, use the three cut method. First, make an undercut about a third of the way through the branch.
4. Next, make a top cut a few inches out from the undercut. This allows the weight of the branch to fall without damaging the bark.
5. Finally, cut a flush cut just above the branch collar.
6. Roger also recommends removing any branches that are rubbing together.
7. Use a pole saw to cut any branches that are out of reach, using the same 3 cut method.
8. Small branches, called suckers, can be removed along the large branches.
9. Remove grass within a 4 foot radius of the trunk. Use a string looped around the trunk to determine the circle’s size and pull the grass by hand so as not to damage the tree roots. If no roots are present in the top of the soil, a grub hoe can be used.
10. Spread mulch around the tree about 2” thick using a rake, keeping it away from the trunk of the tree.
11. Where water can collect and cause rot, drill a _” drainage hole.
Resources:
All tools used, including pruning saws, pole saws, pruning sheers, and pruning poles are available to purchase at the local home center.

back in the day they used to just show the homeowners how to do it and then film the homeowners doing it. now most work is installing something new where the warranty gets voided if the pro doesn't do the install so they basically have to have the pro do it.

Bruce A. Ulrich Yes it even works on existing rotted "holes". We have a maple tree with a 4" rotted hole (from unhealed cut) and it was full of soil, literally. I cleaned it out, made an hole and washed it with hose. It's dry now and at least slowed down the rot

This is very bad practice to drill the tree. Water pockets cause no damage to trees. I love this series but this time he got it wrong.
@sergeybebenin
@sergeybebenin 6 лет назад
malcolm chaffer I guess you also think that tree houses are also bad practice? Because there are many holes that are even bigger. Trees live on though
@75MalcolmX
@75MalcolmX 6 лет назад
I have worked with trees for 25 years as a profesional arborist. I have drilled trees for cabeling, endotherapy and tree houses. I have also cut trees down and examed the damage many many times. Some trees block the rot well others do not. However I have never drain a cavity for two reasons. 1, If there is rot I will make it worse and 2. Fungi need oxygen to grow and a pocket full of water does not give them that. This is my experience, obviously I read it in text books but I also looked for myself during tree removals. Next time you have a chance to cut a tree down that has had a drill hole cut it horizontally and vertically and you will see how the rot spreads. You may also want to look up CODIT in trees if it intrests you further.

I have never heard anyone claim grass could possibly prevent a tree from getting enough water or nutrients. Most trees roots spread many, many feet down and out from the trunk. Furthermore, I'm fairly certain rain cannot cause a living tree to rot, even if a couple ounces pool on it.
@patrickkennedy3786
@patrickkennedy3786 5 лет назад
True, but mower and weed wacker damage at the base can seriously imperil a tree. I believe for ease of maintenance a moat would be around every tree so lawn tools can safely navigate around them. Grass can also hide girdling or sinching roots, which can strangle entire portions of a tree if not caught early in a tree's development.
