I got a tiny Kalenchoe over a year ago, and it is now massive with like 5 super long "legs", but has never bloomed again. After watching this, I have a game plan to prune it back, and hopefully it will get fuller and bloom this year!

Both plants have done well and nearly a year later, need to be separated. My kelanchoe has gotten leggy and so the tips on how to prune it was definitely needed. I’m going to prune and repot it tomorrow thanks to your instructions. Btw, mine rebloomed just from general watering and providing it sunlight.

That's excellent 👍 hopefully it responds well to pruning. The African Violet should probably have its own container as it has very specific requirements, the one plant I've never had luck with, the kalanchoe cuttings root easily so you will have many plants to share

I had received a Kalanchoe Plant from my daughter for Mother’s Day and there wasn’t no information nor a name for it, so I was in the dark of what kind of plant it was and how to care for it! But after a lot of research and not really getting anywhere! My sister told me to use Google Lens App and got more info then any other Apps that charges you every month and still don’t actually shows you exactly how to prune back and transplanting to bigger pots with the right soil and fertilizer to use! Some of the videos from others, they just say a few words about caring for the plants and not really giving you much details about them! Once I got the Name of what kind of plant it was from Google Lens App and it also free but you can do lot more with searches for anything you need to know about whatever! So I got on You Tube and found you, Thank you so much Dave for showing and giving more details about Kalanchoe Plants and it was really nice to know that you can also what you trim off you can use make them as starters as well for more plants!! Again a big THANK YOU for your Videos you do Dave!! 😊

Only I had no idea what kind of plant it is, and since it's no bigger than one of your cuttings with leaves half the size and completely dehydrated.. Plants freshly bought from the stores are tightly packed and have a mix of big leaves and small leaves. They look as if few have been pressed hard to fit into one pot and the growth pattern looks very untidy. Those you filmed in the video appear to have uniform leaves and look very balanced. This made me think I will try to make new cuttings, and once they root I will remove the large leaves. I will try to prune the cuttings as they grow and shape them into compact shrubs or succulent bonsai. I noticed that Kalanchoe Blossfeldiana shrubs which are allowed to grow naturally look very different from the ones presented in stores.

After I learned how to make it flower it’s finally got some small bunches of buds. However it’s way overgrown its pot and needs drastic pruning. My question is should I wait until after it blooms or can I cut the stems below the air roots and repot them with the flowers unopened buds? Will this injure the flowers that haven’t bloomed yet?

Dave, I love the video. I am also a Kalanchoe lover and have had my share of disappointments. I have am curious about a couple of items. It did not appear that you let the stem callus over before planting nor did I notice you using Hormone dip , also are you using any special method to force the plant to blossom or you just letting mother nature take its course ? Please comment when you can, Thank you Hwc in Los Angeles

I keep my soil damp. Not moist or wet. So the cuttings usually take at 80-90 percent. I know many people say to let cutting dry out for a day or two but I think that’s more for actual cacti and succulents. Overwatering is an issue so don’t do that with these. Too much love is a bad thing in this case. Take care

Why am I not seeing any aerial roots on my plant? Mine is very healthy looking but no aerial roots. It's become very leggy so I'm looking to help it get bushier.
@DaveTheHillsideGardener
@DaveTheHillsideGardener 9 месяцев назад
High humidity. Do you mist or spray your plants or have a humidifier in the room? Those will help. If the plant is healthy they’re really not necessary so it’s not necessarily a bad sign.

Not seeing roots..... Can you put a contrasting paper behind them so they show up? All I can see is your scissors mostly covered up with leaves. Can you show them after the cut is made? You put the cuttings away shielded by the plant. Are they thick like orchid or super fine like hairs??? Long? Short? Color??
@DaveTheHillsideGardener
@DaveTheHillsideGardener Год назад
You can cut and place into damp potting mix right away. Don’t get the soil wet or let it dry out and you will see new growth in a week or so. It is a very easy plant to propagate

I planted all different types of colors of kalanchoe from just the leaf of it and they grew but I don’t know why they all grew as yellow flowers, I planted lots of colors pink, red, orange but when the flowers are opening I noticed they all grew as yellow flowers and I don’t know why do you by any chance?
@DaveTheHillsideGardener
@DaveTheHillsideGardener 2 года назад
What I have found doing research is that they can change colors depending on light levels and growing conditions. also, I know sometimes when commercial growers fill pots they may stick several cuttings in one pot for sale. If you took cuttings from several different plants that may be the reason as well. I suppose it's normal for the blooms to change ?

I brought a little cutting back from vacation. I put it in water to root. A few weeks later the top of the stem was covered in tiny black bugs. I don’t know where they came from. I rinsed the bugs off but in another week they were back. I rinsed them off and put some insect dust on them. I would like to have it as a house plant. Does this plant attract bugs?
@DaveTheHillsideGardener
@DaveTheHillsideGardener 11 дней назад
It can attract aphids if outdoors or if the plant was infected you took a cutting of. They can get bugs but mine never go outside so unless you have another plant with issues I’d say you brought them in with the cutting

@DaveTheHillsideGardener

As the plant puts on new growth it will be away from the original cutting so that gives it room to expand towards the center of the pot. Thanks for asking

These succulents enjoy their haircuts; more than other succulents. People have in the back of their mind, Succulents, let them be or you can kill them. However these beauts will grow like a vine if left on their own, reaching for sunlight. I have seen some that have grown to over 4' in length that snapped in two with the lightest touch. I used to grow mine for cut flowers, as most of my family and friends do not want to tend to plants anymore. But as with most gifts, it is best not to overdo it. As you receive the snotty comments, "is that all you can give me?" So, I make the bouquets for my home and garden. Some of them have grown accustomed to my habits and bloom in the Spring so I can display them in my garden area.

@@GreysAnatomyFan1994 Yeah, friends and family can be harsh with their criticism but they are easily forgotten. Kalanchoe are very long lived as cut flowers; they last as long as they would on the plant. I have gotten phone calls from those that I've given a bouquet to asking, "do I throw these out?" "There are roots coming out of the stems!" I tell them what to do but they just come back to me which is fine. In case you were wondering, Kalanchoe Blossfeldiana like to be planted together en masse which makes an awesome display. Especially out in a patio or balcony setting; I have had humming birds visit them sometimes when they're passing through. I have mine near my doorway so they are out of the wind. But every summer, the hummingbirds seem to find them.

@DaveTheHillsideGardener
@DaveTheHillsideGardener 6 месяцев назад
They will only bloom around Jan/feb time typically. Which is why you see them sold around Valentine’s Day. You may want to wait a month or so just to be sure you’re not removing any flower buds. If you don’t see any I’d prune back and put the cuttings in the same pot to promote a bushier and fuller look.
@KL-sf6jx

@@DaveTheHillsideGardener thanks so much for the quick response! I don't see buds, each stem does have something that might be buds, but they are pointy, so I think they will end up turning into leaves. I saw small roots along the big stems so I changed to a bigger pot so I could cover the roots with soil, they ended up even growing longer and taller and instead of growing up, now they are growing side ways. Is it because the stem is too heavy so it is filling down?
@DaveTheHillsideGardener
@DaveTheHillsideGardener 6 месяцев назад
@KL-sf6jx the plant naturally wants to sprawl out. It really doesn’t grow tall per se. that’s why I let mine trail down over the edge of a pot or even in a hanging basket would work too. Nothing to worry about
