Dear Nigel, I’m very happy you take care of yourself, and put on a fan when you’re working in so warm greenhouse. Never worry about sound, health is the most important, and heat stroke is no joke. Stay safe and well hydrated like your trees 😃 Thank you for work and updates 🥰

Nice work today Nigel. This heat is oppressive. Today and tomorrow (when Dave is in my backyard!) is going to be killer hot with T-storms. Hydrate.

That's right Nigel, it's difficult to grow lots of balanced branches on a kapok tree, there will definitely be dominant branches and the smallest branches will be weak and lose, but I once did Nigel's experiment, when I finished pruning my kapok tree, in the next few days when the shoots started to grow , I noticed that if there was a dominant shoot I would cut it a few cm from the top, this succeeded in balancing the growth of the other branches, and the branch that was cut earlier would immediately appear new shoots without any problems because it came from the tallest and strongest branch, in the end all branches grow in balance. and that's just cutting to balance growth, not cutting to form the tree structure. Structural cutting is carried out in a few months after all the branches have been cut and shaped.

@@TheBonsaiZone I'm sorry Nigel, I forgot to say that I did this experiment on trees planted in the ground, I don't know whether these tips are effective on trees that are in pots, but it's worth a try, I haven't tried it yet because my kapok tree is still in the ground directly, not yet. I put it in the pot

Around where I live there are these old willow trees that grow next to a river, and when they get too old they fall over but keep growing new branches, so they grow in kind of a natural raft style. I think that would make quite an interesting inspiration for a bonsai. Maybe not with a willow but rather a willow-leaf ficus?

Have you ever tried an Aeonium? Another succulent suitable for bonsai. I have a really nice one that I've managed to keep small with branching and a really nice trunk, 5 years old now. It grew some aerial roots at one point but when I tried to grow more on purpose the trunk rotted, but it survived standing on those roots, and now it's a root-over-rock style!

I have lots of Portulacaria afra's and 1 that's been training as a Bonsai and have two Baobab that are 2 thick cuttings that rooted and starting to side branches. I'm South African, love how you develop woody succulents as Bonsai's. My rule is you can apply Bonsai tactics to any plants. I love to experiment. Currently trying our Sausage Tree (Kigelia africana). They germinate quite easy from seed. Semi fast growing and can handle heavy root pruning. My oldest Sausage tree is almost 2 years and the base thickness is already almost +20mm. You should try get seeds of them. Wish I could send seeds. But Im not close to any facilities to send them.

Great catch up on some awesome trees nigel. Hope your cashew tree sprouts new branches from the chop back. Interesting to see them develop. Would you not try to plant top as cutting .

You're going to show the schefflera with big leaves just to be a contrarian to those who hate on you, I know it. It does look charming with the big leaves, though!

that Korean maple is turning into a great little tree. i haven't seen many examples of K maples in shows...perhaps an underrated species? i love J maples but i have to admit it gets monotonous when every maple is a J or a trident
