My forest is in need of a spring pruning, it's been growing for 8 months now!
These trees are styled to look like African Baobab trees so I'm creating more scars on the trunks to look like elephant damage.
Stay tuned for bonsai updates at the end!

I like the train in the background. Chain saw no problem. Always great to see Dr. Saunders in the operating room during surgery.

Be the elephant! Scare from bottom to top in big swoops. Scaring down is not the way to go. 😁

I was wondering how the scarring on the jade tree healed from last year. It looks great and will add a lot of character to the tree in the future. I am looking forward to the development of the desert rose forest.

Am happy to see that the trunk scarring was successful. It is a bit unfortunate that Portulacaria have these distinctive rings on the trunk, but what can you do? Nature moves in a mysterious ways 🙃. Wish my portas would thrive like yours, maybe one day I found out why, not overwatering so must be something else. Cheers everyone.

Oh these came back beautifully! I always dread trimming my ports even though they look nice. watching your videos has helped me push down that fear because each time they come back I never regret it 💛 *knock on wood*

Loved watching that scarring work with the scissors. Very creative and it's really creating an authentic look to the trees!

If the main goal is to thicken the trunks for the baobab look (hence the major chop every 5 years) and the vast majority of the branches on these trees will be cut off with the big chop why not just let the trees grow all summer and trim them once a year to get them into the plant room? Then when the trunk size is where you want it do your last big chop and start developing the branches? It seems that these regular prunings are counterproductive to your long term goals and slowing you down.

so soothing hearing the music instead of the saws. I kind of play a game sometimes trying to guess your cutting decision while you are pondering Doing pretty good at guessing right these days. My tiny Portulacaria Afra have a long way to go!

Man, Nigel. Have you ever seen FernGully: the last rainforest? Well some of those examples you show in this video look like Hexas, the evil sprit, trapped in the tree.

Hi Nigel, I think you might find this interesting about this plant! You have mentioned before (if I remember correctly) that Porticularia Afra, known locally as 'spekboom' here in South Africa, has amazing CO2 sequestration capabilities and can tolerate extreme climatic conditions. These capabilities of Spekboom are being used to restore 1 million ha of degraded thicket in the Eastern Cape and part of the Western Cape while also sequestering atmospheric carbon and storing it in the soil. It is a massive operation that I am involved in. My goal is to ask my colleagues to bring me a bonsai specimen!

I understand it would be a lot of work for you but I'll shoot my shot. What are the chances you would send some of your port cuttings in the mail? Your port forest is my favorite bonsai you have and is what brought me to your channel. I'd love to have a cutting knowing it came from your forest. Of course I'd cover any expenses.

I’ve wondered the same! Just can’t find them here and when you do the price is exorbitant. Since they do need to be dried a little asae would work. It does mean extra work for you but you receive a lot of presents from your fans and this would be a nice way to give back to some loyal fans. Please don’t be offended but I really would like some afra and ficus cuttings as you seem to have a lot of these. I will gladly pay for postage and handling and as I live in Ottawa we don’t have any restrictions. I met you at the Toronto bonsai show very briefly. Thanking you in advance. You can contact me be email.

How about considering your head as a ‘bonsai’ project. Time to trim. Ha, ha. ha. That would be neat. You are too young for he bad Einstein-look. Just saying. My 2 cents which of course does NOT change the Bonsai content & your incredible knowledge, just the presentation.
