Topping pepper plants is a topic of much debate, with some growers saying it's a fantastic way to boost production, and others saying it's not necessary at all. So, who's right? As with most things in gardening, IT DEPENDS!
Pruning peppers removes top growth to promote more branching and bushiness. By doing this, you sacrifice your earliest peppers in favor of growing more vegetation and a sturdier plant, which can then lend itself to more flower and pepper production later on down the road.
I prefer to top lanky plants to bush them out myself, especially if I'm still early in the season with plenty of time to let those peppers produce. On larger peppers like bells or banana peppers, I let them be - it doesn't seem to do much besides slow down production.

Pepper pruning tip of your own? Lemme know what works for you ⤵️
@xalapa61

Epic Gardening IMO, depends on your growing season time and pot size. In general,Top early if it is leggy and vulnerable to wind etc. otherwise save the time and let it be, and enjoy! Also when topping you can attempt to clone the toppings.

For me it’s; never top peppers, prune everything below the fork and side shoots looking inside, and support plant if necessary

@@xalapa61 I was going to ask about cloning. Can I clone like we do with tomato plants or does it has to be the top?

Yaria Samavan Carlan I believe it must be a cut at a node, in order to clone more easily.if the plant has a v shape you may be able to cut 1 side of the V shape with out completely topping the plant.

Here is my experience....bell peppers I would NOT prune. Hot peppers prune. My bell peppers were half sized fruit and the plants looked big and bushy. The serranos and the jalapeno plants thrived and produced lots of fruit when pruned when young. Just my experience.

In my experience, topping my peppers is the ONLY way I can get a decent yield. I’ve been doing it for about 4 years, and for many years before that I was lucky to get a few peppers off each plant. Now my plants are at least double the size and I get WAY more peppers. Works with both sweet peppers and jalapeños. Last year I topped 1 jalapeño plant and left 3 others unpruned. The 1 plant I topped grew 2 or 3 times larger than the other 3 plants which were all the same size. I also pinch the flower buds off all my peppers to delay blooming until the plants are large enough with many branches to support the weight of multiple peppers. That’s a critical step because otherwise the plant’s growth slows once it starts fruiting and you won’t get many more branches or new fruit forming after that. The plant should have as many sturdy branches as possible before you allow it to set fruit. Pruning AND pinching buds leads to more branching.

o good i pinched blooms on the peppers since i was doing the tomatoes too, then decided to look up after if it was good/bad to do to them LOL they are still pretty tiny (peppers have not grown much bigger since planting in the ground, they just went right to flowering so was hoping pruning the flowers would encourage them to get a lil bigger first)

I get mostly midday sun, and the evening sun and morning get shaded so the side leaves of my plant don't get much light but the top does. So pruning will help give it a bigger footprint and increase its light exposure for me.

Personally I try to top as a seedling when it gets 3 sets of true leaves and normally only top once. By topping early u don’t let the peppers waste energy growing too tall before u top and no one wants a single stem pepper! Also, I make sure to trim off ALL fruit for the first 6 weeks or so after planting seedlings out into raised beds so all energy goes into building plant infrastructure....fruit production drains a HUGE amount of energy from a plant. Will get much more production over the entire season by doing that.

Thanks so much for the video Kevin, by coincidence I planted my first peppers recently, other than the pumpkin I have growing in my backyard (knuckleheads, which was accidental too as I was just trying to compost 2 pumpkins left over from Halloween that lasted through December) these pepper plants (cayenne and Hungarian wax) are the first real potted plants that are fruit bearing I've ever done. I call it coincidence because I was looking for a video about pruning when they started to fruit (because mine have become extremely bushy from topping, which I heard about doing since I started my seedlings late) but thank you for mentioning pruning after fruiting, it was very helpful! Most plants were toped at the 3rd leaf node to help with bushing out to encourage pepper production. So far so good, record # of peppers ripening for me. A couple were not pruned and they are way behind on pepper production and height. All get the same nutrient and sunshine..they are all hydrponicaly grown. Thankyou for your video, great info. This year planted 18 tobasco, 12 seranos, 92 cayenne, 4 red bell the 5th turned out funny as I ended up with a kung Pao pepper. I topped everything and I have such an early crop this year on seranos I'm picking alot to save on the heat stress while letting more energy into flowers n more fruit it keeps compounding exponentially. Topping is way to go I tried to top once I had established about 8 main leaves on my plants. Next year I'm getting Anchor, jalapeno, habanero, into my rotation. I make a lot of salsa Verde, fire hot salsa. Love my plants!

In my experimentation over the last two years I think I would agree with this. Just topping the very top is enough to stop growth on the main stalk and encourage more nodes to shoot out stems. That said, if your plant is hella lanky, chop dat boi down.

I've often thought about the fact that we tell everyone that pests love plants that are damaged or stressed, then we are told to cutor top the plants. Here in Florida, if I prune in my gardens I get white flies and aphids. If I prune my tomatoes, I have tomato hornworms way worse than seasons I dont prune. I'm sure the intense heat doesnt help either. Just my observation.

I don't typically top my pepper plants I pinched all the baby leaves out of the top and pinch all the buds off while it's smaller.... I then take cotton string and tie one piece around the rim of the pot and then I tie each branch down almost 90 degrees... This gives each branch an equal amount of sunlight and space to grow... I do this while the plant is young and pliable and I adjust the strings out towards the tips of the branches to keep them widespread from the main stem..... pinching the buds off makes it put more energy into bushing out and pinching the baby leaves off of the top of the Y seems to be faster than topping and makes it bush out just as much

So I have a dog, and he is a big boy. One day, he was walking past my Fresno chili plant, and his powerful tail literally chopped the top of the plant off. In the days and weeks prior, the plant had been dehydrated, and damaged by harsh winds, so I figured that my dog just put the plant out of its misery. However, this led to a ludicrous explosion of growth. It is now starting to flower and is the most successful looking pepper plant I have ever done

From local indonesian farmer: if you plant for yourself, no prunning is ok, you can't eat all peppers yourself and it will look prettier in your garden. The fruiting will be slower but you will have good peppers when you need it For massive gardener or to sell, pruning will increase fruiting, but you will get peppers laterer in its life

I'm always reluctant to prune heavily, however, I've been watching a ton of Roots and Refuge lately and Jess prunes her tomatoes like nobody's business. So I've adopted that technique as well and I love the air flow it offers my plants. I tend to plant a little closer together than what is traditional, so pruning has helped the health of my plants. HOWEVER...I can not bring myself to prune my pepper plants with the exception of a snip or two on an unhealthy looking plant/leaf. This year I'm noticing that I'm getting fruit setting while the peppers are super short (like approx. 12 inches). It looks odd to have a bell pepper growing on a 12 in plant. Is anyone else noticing this? I've never had fruit set until the plants are at least 2-3 feet tall. And it seems to be happening on all of my pepper plants, irregardless of variety.🤔

The plant is getting too tall and it seems wasteful to have such a long bare stretch below the Y- fork, so I would like to prune it below the fork. I am worried however that as the plant will then have no leaves, it will die. What do you guys think? Keep in mind I live in Northern Europe and the growing season is coming to an end now...

The nodules below the two leaves are trying to break through but the one at where I thought was the Y is not doing anything. Should I just cut them down to the producing nodules and hope for the best or is there another way to save this plant? Topping peppers just to top them is kind of silly. Topping has less of an impact than the nutrients and light available. So take care of your soil if you want lots of yield. Or nute it to death with your preferred method of organic or non-organic. But with good soil that's unnecessary. As one of those pepperheads with decades of experience I never top my plants and I get over 100 pods per plant every year. Yours are super small plants compared to mine, which are 4 ft tall right now. Some years I get them up to 6 ft tall if I go heavy on the nutes. I quit fertilizing a few years ago and went to a "no till" kind of concept but I use containers. The bigger the container = bigger plant = more pods assuming all things remain the same. But if you want REALLY big yields, use two and three year old plants. They aren't putting as much effort into roots so they fruit out earlier and more heavily. Once you go into growing plants for multiple years, your concept of pruning really changes shape. You prune to control the size of the plant, not to force it to yield more. If you really wanna go advanced, defoliate the leaves on the bottom 2/3rds of the plant (lollipop it) and that will make it branch out more as the light hits the stem stimulating branch buds to form. But if you top the plant, you kill it's final height.

As a beginning gardener who is interested in peppers, this was helpful. I feel silly to say I didn't even think of growing a pepper plant for years. I guess I always thought the whole plant died at the end of the season.

I top once my peppers have 4 real leaves. It’s amazing the difference. topping once theyre starting to mature is pointless. A good rule of thumb is if your young pepper looks thin and tall, top it. If it naturally already has a bushy look to it with multiple chutes, don’t top it!

I topped out a cayene pepper and a hybrid striped pepper plant, and both seemed to stop growing at all. It seemed to stunt them.

I have small peppers which started to bud some flowers out. I live in Toronto and was wondering if I should cut them off to promote plant growth rather then fruit growth. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

I always have a hard time growing bell peppers for some reason. Leaves always turn yellow to early or the flowers turn yellow to early and fall off. I'll be lucky to get only one tiny bell pepper. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

Does it really matter how you prune? Cutting at an angle or a straight cut?

Yes the water can sit on top

Great info. Thanks! I have a question, any help would be appreciated. My garden was just damaged by a strorm that came through. I live in zone 6, is it too late to buy some veggies from a nursery to replace the damaged ones?

My peppers have been in seedling stage for what seems like forever. I seeded them around 2 months ago and they still are in the dicotyledon stage, any suggestions on what I’m doing wrong? I live in South Georgia near Florida in zone 8b.

I have no luck with peppers at all I'm in zone 8b and I thought peppers liked the heat? This year all of my transplants died so I direct sowed just to try it and I only have about 10 out of probably 100 plants coming up. They are about 2 inches tall... any advice? Since I direct sowed so late should I prune when they are big enough?

*I need help* , I started growing 4 green beans in a pot for about a month and they were doing so well, and today I found a big brown caterpillar who finished eating two of them completely and was just about to chop off my third one, half it’s stem is eaten (thick wise) but it’s still standing straight and my last and smallest plant is still alive but had yet to grow any leaves, please, I need to know that my littler bean poles aren’t a lost cause despite one being almost chopped down like a pine tree, what can I do to keep pesky caterpillars from entering my pot again?
