In this video I show you how I go about pruning some Maples.
The way, we find, to grow strong maples is to let them grow for a period of time before pruning them. I shape a number if maples in this video.

i don't know the weather and light conditions you have for your trees, but they may be completly different than those in the UK. If you have really high temperatures for instance the trees just stop growing if too hot and may start again once it gets cooler a bit. Not sure if your altitude in Denver plays into there as well, but it could be. But overall I wouldn't worry too much. 6 inches is quite good, I would start worrying if they only get one leave out or none and then stop.

Hello Peter. Thanks for another great video. So nice at this time. I will be trying an experiment wiring maples with insulated electrical wire to minimize bare wire damaging the bark. Karl
@h.b.1421
@h.b.1421 3 года назад
it will be better if you wire the branches with an open coil instead of using an insulated wire, as even then the insulation is harder than the bark of the branch and will therefore grow in as fast as with normal wire. An open coil you can imagine like wiring a branch which is 2-3 times as thick as the branch you are wiring in reality. The effect is that the branch is loose inside the wire cage. If I remember right you use a slightly thicker wire when using open coil wiring.

Do you ever return any trees back to the wild? Maybe edit it in such a way with bends or back budding or design or whatever so that if someone with a keen eye and knowledge sees the giant tree in the future they will say "Hey... This tree was definitely shaped by man". Is there any way to make the trunk or main branches a big circle? Or maybe twin snakes rising twists?
@peterchan3100
@peterchan3100 3 года назад
I once heard a story of a bonsai guy who was caught collecting from the wild without permission. The authorities fined him and made him plant the tree back from where he got it.
@h.b.1421
@h.b.1421 3 года назад
over time it wouldn't matter the initial shape the tree had been when replanted into the wild again, as this shape will outgrow really fast. You would only be able to see a tiny bit of this shape after you cut down the tree. A lot of trees have ingrown fences or other items which were close to a tiny tree grown big

Dear Mr Chan. Thank you for this video. When do you apply autumn fertilizers for better autumn color of your maples? Are these organic or mineral fertilizers? Thank you in advance for your answer😊
@h.b.1421
@h.b.1421 3 года назад
the colors of the leaves aren't that important (although they may be nice to look at), they are mostly set into the genetics of the plant, though with variations. What is important with autumn fertilizing is better winter resistance against cold and a better start into the new year for the tree. The old leaves don't need to be fertilized as they will fall off in autumn anyway. As there are quite a lot of different fertilizers available throughout the world, the best is to look up which nutrients are needed for your plants at which time in the year and then using the appropriate one at the right time. And it is a good idea to mix organic and mineral fertilizers if one misses specific nutrients

too many variables can come into play here. Too much or not enough water, not enough light. The wrong fertilizer, missing nutrients like iron. Bugs on the leaves like spidermites or aphids or grubs of weevils in the earth which eat the roots for example and so on and so forth. It would be best to take your plant to a nursery if you don't see anything of these and ask what other thing it could be. Good luck

Why should he cut the roots? Peter Chan didn't repot the tree nor did the trees needed to be repotted. You only need to cut roots every few years and only if the tree is too heavily pot bound. Some trees like pines and so need to be repotted every 5-15 years So why should he need to cut the roots?
