The Prussian army in its heyday was considered one of the strongest armies in the world and served as an example to follow for many states. After the German Empire emerged, it became the basis of a powerful German army. And today, we will consider the first stage of this path, when the Prussian army went from a small military formation of the Prince-elector of Brandenburg to the elite military machine of Frederick the Great.

I appreciate your coverage so far. Seemed well balanced, and you covered a bit of every aspect of the military, from kings to corps to global allies. What is your accent? Russian? Ukrainian?

Just watched your first video, and you sound Italian in that one. I give up, as an American, I don't get all the European accents.

@Simone Streeter Hi, you're right, I'm originally from Russia but I haven't lived there for almost 20 years, so when I talk to people from Russia, they say I have German accent or so :) I'm working on my pronunciation, thanks for your feedback

My distant relative was one of Frederick the Greats curiassers. He was in all the famous battles but got shot in the neck at Chotusitz. Napoleon was an artillery specialist. I wonder if the increasing use of firearms and artillery reduced the cavalry to target practice. Except maybe in the vast distances of Russia and Poland where the mobility and success of the Cossacks is legendary.

That sounds pretty accurate to me, I would think so. And, that's really neat about one of you ancestors, really neat to have such history in the family; it's amazing what a little digging into lineage will uncover. From what I can gather, semi-automatic and machine guns in WW1 put an end to cavalry, but I would say quality long range ordinance with defenses did play a part in the loss of many mounted soldiers.

I think mainly cavalry only became majorly affected by artillery once breach loaders came into use, but without a doubt semi auto rifles and machine guns like the comment above said, definitely ended cavalry aside for the Russian civil war where cavalry became extremely effective.

Is that ragtime music playing the background and competing with your narration?

The Prussian Army by the Seven Years War was large, but largely made up of said conscripts, however this meant the quality of men was greatly reduced. These initially were not professional soldiers, they were for the most part an army of drunkards, criminals and vagabonds. However through the leadership of the army and the men who had a say in the developing Prussia's military doctrine; they sewed the very fabric of the army in around 30-40 years. So that by the Napoleonic Wars they were already steadily becoming the most professional land army in all of Europe, just behind France and Britain - who for the longest time dominated in military prestige. Then, of course, by around 1870, Prussia had the largest and most feared land army in Europe, and arguably the world.

Genuine question - How many Fredericks, Wilhems and Fredrick Wilhems were there in Prussia ?
