I got to try the Playstation VR 2 system with Horizon: Call of the Mountain. It was an incredible experience, even if it wasn't a perfect one bradsmells.com... #playstation #psvr2 #ps5
Pre-ordered a month ago. People complaining about the price, I don't get it. It's going to be one of - if not the best available when it launches. People spending $1000 on a video card but oh a complete gaming system *AND* next-gen VR for $1300 is a bridge too far...?
You do know people who spend $1000+ on video cards typically are not console gamers right…PC gamers and console gamers sometimes just can’t co-exist…Plus with the current macroeconomic environment, even gamers who used to play both are trying to be cost effective(why invest two systems when u can get most of it from one)
1300 for VR + the console price which may vary. You're getting into 2000 dollars. You can buy a Quest 2 cheap and get a nice pc which will handle VR great for that money.
@@OverbiteGames You should also consider a majority of gamers live in third world countries and and/or are children that don't have any of their own money.
@Jovan Spasović why would you want to do all that when you can buy a top end console with a top end VR just for 1000$??? If you want a PC that handles VR well, this is the price you will pay for a video card alone, and you will get a worse experience with quest 2. That just doesn't make any fckng sense
*One of the clearest, most rational & non-hysterical/-hyperbolic PSVR2 overviews I've yet seen.* *No wonder you & Sebastian are my ONLY go-to trusted sources for VR hardware info.* *Well done, Bradley!!* 🙂👍🏻
It's true. Those VR youtubers that do that end up just saying all the VR headsets are good and cool and it makes their opinion pointless if they are not descriptive or objective.
I'm less certain about Sebastian tbh. Felt he shilled too hard for the HP reverb personally, and that was more of a sit down sim headset, despite him saying it tracked as well as Quests/ Rifts etc
Sounds like leagues better than the first PSVR headset, which is to be expected, but it's nice to hear. It's also interesting that they _didn't_ go with pancake optics, but then considering how expensive those headsets are, maybe that's not a negative thing. Thanks for your coverage Mr. Bradman.
There's no question in my mind Sony would have chosen pancake optics today. At the time PSVR 2 was designed, pancake lenses as far as I can tell had not been proven in the commercial space and would have been a lot more expensive back then.
@@dtrjones pancakes are still really expensive and you need to pair them with even more expensive/power hungry screens because of the light efficiency of pancakes
@@Clara_Page my suggestion is, let's first try that psvr2 that hasn't come out yet, and then consider whether new glasses are even needed. After all, Sony has talented optics engineers (they have a whole advanced digital photography "department" and bought Minolta in the past with additional engineers) and from what I've read the patents they developed these fresnels from scratch to minimize their weaknesses.
Hope this sells well so Sony keeps making and advancing VR. I could only imagine what PSVR3 or PSVR4 would looks like for PS6, and PS7 respectively. The future of VR is going to be incredible if its still supported.
@@gigoo6420 hahaha it won’t bro, it’s future and this set is one of the best on the market! You will be happy with it probably for 6-7 years with PS5. Don’t let price foolish you, because you need a PS5 also, that’s called marketing so you need around 1200$. Now you can see how good PSVR2 will be. Ordered mine yesterday for GT7 can’t wait!!
Console always have one killer advantage: they have a huge market and can focus on optimization to really get the most out of the hardware. PC is always generalized and from software developer to screen there is a lot of performance lost. I was super impressed with the PSVR1 for what it was, Sony do amazing stuff
Also.....the fact that it JUST WORKS. PC's biggest downfall. It might not work even if your system is good enough and assembly may be required. Aka, tweaking.
@@claytonyoung1351 couldn't have said it better. I just got a vive face tracker, and I had to jump through all these hoops just to get it to work with my Oculus quest 2 wirelessly whilst still letting me use my vive trackers and index controllers. This was such a pain because my vive trackers used to float everywhere while face tracking was in use. That, and my SteamVR is being extremely buggy. Whenever I try to play SteamVR via air-link or VD, SteamVR just decides to freeze whenever loading into something or when opening menus. For example, SV freezes when starting up, opening VRChat, loading into a new world, and opening Google Chrome or other apps. It freezes for like 2 minuets and goes back to normal. This doesn't happen when I use a link cable, so I'm inclined to believe my wifi might be the issue. I have great wifi, but recently things have felt slower, so maybe that's the problem. Does anyone here know a solution?
Very nice to get your particular expressions, Brad. It's so close now and I'm so excited. 2023 is gonna be a cool VR-year for sure. Cheers to that smooth locomotion! Thanks for pointing that out. Peace
GT7 is definitely going to be the killer app for PSVR2....photorealistic graphics of GT7+fun and realistic driving model+Steering wheel controller+PSVR2 = maximum immersion
@@luisreyes456 hahaha no it won’t you idiotic liar!! Full game will be in vr2… Only reason they didn’t do it before was because od ps4… So kid shut up and read!
Brad I highly doubt it would be sanitary for many to test the included earbuds at a loud ass trade show. I'd rather know that higher end audio is a worthwhile an option or not. The thing about added costs that nobody talks about to me with the Quest 2 hype, is that it comes with a shitty headstrap, stock faceplate and lack luster built-in audio that they don't factor into upgrade costs. Not to mention if you pile on extending the battery life. And or buying a USB-C Link cable for PC streaming and or a decent wifi router for wireless streaming. I don't know, $950 for a working foveated rendered eye tracking HDR VR system with haptics on everything including the dual-sense controller for even regular gaming sounds like a bargain to me.
This is a great point that not enough people are making. I completely agree with you. On top of all that, some of these added costs are items that a lot of people already have, like headphones... or PS5's... 😉
For sure if you own the console that would make things cheaper than $950, $550? They really amped up restocking PS5 as of late. People should probably wait for a smaller redesign. Supposedly the next model will sell the optical drive as an add on if rumors are true. I’m holding out for valve to save us. At least more headsets are coming. The new HTC XR Elite is already taking preorders.
The headphones in the box are stereo only not the tempest 3d sound like the pulse headphones are . Same headphones that came with the psvr1 are in the box with psvr2
I have a Quest 2 and a PC, but some of the best VR content will be exclusive to PSVR2 on PS5, not to mention all the extra bells and whistles (and inevitable PC support). Ease of use can't be understated either imo. Got mine preordered and looking forward to playing GT7, Call of The Mountain, and RE8. And probably Switchback. The launch line-up is actually pretty amazing. The big question now is what comes after, and based on what we know teams are working on and what we can speculate on, it's gonna be a good time. I just hope we don't have to wait for E3 time to get a showcase. (April at least, please Sony!)
I also own a laptop 3070 and quest 2. Bought a PS5 2 years ago so happy with it and now preordered PSVR2 with call of the mountain. I agree 100% with your assesment that PSVR2 could push VR gaming further than it has ever been. I wish everybody that likes VR would at least support this by stopping the spread of bs FUD. I so want VR to succeed the potential is enormous. Have you ever tried horizon zero dawn VR on PC?
PC support is not inevitable, it's unlikely, they are selling the psvr 2 at a loss they are making their money back in first party game sales and third party store sales tax, they won't be getting any of their money if they support PC, only modded support is inevitable
@@s3rv3r3rror8 Haven't tried HZD in VR yet. I have a rare(?) bug for at least a month now that makes the Link encoding stutter every 5-10 seconds, and Air Link and VD make it better in some ways and worse in some ways (in terms of stutter). Found 100% the exact issue I have on the support forums. Support acknowledged it even. But multiple updates later and it's still happening. I might not ever use my Quest 2 on PC again depending on when PSVR2 on PC is figured out.
Thx for ur feedback, PSVR2 is definitely going to push VR gaming for more 3A/2A experience, just finished Sony’s new God of War game , if ever we can get first party studios from Sony to make a VR game, they’ll probably even surpass HLA in terms of Wow moments.
Awesome video Brad, thank you. Really hyped for this! Even though I have a decent PC and Index I feel like Sony is going to bring A LOT more AAA VR games than PC will ever have ( still hoping Alyx and Boneworks/Bonelab makes its way to PSVR 2 at some point ). I have a question about the controllers. Are the face buttons capacitive touch or is it only the triggers and grip buttons?
That would be perfect, and getting ps vr exclusives on steam and steam vr on psvr 2 would be amazing and a great step forward for vr. But that will never happen unfortunately.
@@kayraerdem2410 Valve has the largest gaming platform and the best vr game. Sony is already porting exclusives like The Last of Us, Spiderman, and God of War to steam for nothing in return from Valve. Plus who gives a shit if it's "not fair". Everybody wins from a move like that.
Sony is expecting to offset the cost of this headset through game sales. It is unlikely they will send their users to a different store for content. Sony wants the 30% cut and they aren't going to willingly give it to Valve.
Its a shame that the environment was messing with the controller tracking, that would be one thing I'd be interested in given the new wraparound shape. Looking forward to your views when you get time with it in a more controlled environment, just to see how well they actually track to the sides and below you.
After switching to the quest pro controllers I don't think I can go back to IR tracked controllers now but i would be interested to find out how accurate PSVR's controllers are when out of line of sight of the headset
I wish consoles had mod support and free multiplayer. I get plenty of FPS of my quest 2 and PC setup but it seems like PS5 & PSVR2 might be more optimized since theyre built to work together.
Ps vr 2 has been the headset that I’ve been waiting on for many years. I loved the oled screen on the ps vr1 but the tracking and move controllers held it back. This fixes all the issues that I had with psvr.
Games this really needs: - Half Life Alyx - Boneworks/bonelab (preferably a $50-60 bundle) - VRChat - SairentoVR - Dreams (updated for PSVR2 or a PS5 version of the game) Also, I do hope this sells well enough to get a lot of developers to make big games for it, because we really need good VR games on PC beyond the scope of the Oculus Quest. PSVR2 succeeding would be good for the whole VR industry (unless Sony starts making BS exclusivity deals)
I support PlayStation VR2 and I don’t mind that it only on ps5. Why? Because they’re losing money making these headset already and trying to push virtual reality into a positive light. NO gimmicks or sample size game. We also getting the most futuristic with eye tracking and rendering. I want to support company like these. They are go-getters, trying take a step forward. Why support Facebook that does nothing for VR gaming. I own a Quest 2 for 2 years now….. Nothing to show.
No backwards compatibility is disappointing for sure, but I think the launch lineup itself is very strong. If you compare it with a console launch, was there any where you could play as many flagship games on day one? Sure most of them are existing games, but I think this strategy of adding VR modes (for free) to existing games is the way forward as long as the motion controls are implemented well
Definitely a strong lineup. I'm kind of happy they're already existing games because I just picked up RE8 for $20. Deliberately held off buying the game so I can play in VR.
Moss 1&2 have been ported over to VR2. Taking full of advantage of the VR2's resolution, FOV, Eye tracking, FR, Motion Tracking controllers etc. I hope Astro Bot Rescue Mission gets the same treatment. Maybe even Resident Evil 7, A Fisherman's Tale etc. Why let them go to waste when you factor in that the VR1 sold only 5+ million units?
This was great, thanks for the info. It has made my mind up. This was the perfect "RU-vid informational video", just you talking giving us great info. I wish all of YT was like this! Personally I'm praying that the haptic feedback is strong. Beat Saber feels great on the PSVR1 partly due to the excellent vibrations through the move controllers, far better than the meek feedback on the Index controllers. I really hope they've made these new controllers capable of proper vibration. Other than that, I agree that getting ports of the PSVR1 library games quickly onto the PSVR2 will be critical. Nothing harms a great system more than a lack of great titles. Though GT7 VR mode sounds promising.
The fact that they already have 3 AAA games at launch is promissing. They are doing their part it's now time for us to do ours, support will only come if we buy the products. Often people wonder why some products don't get support from these companies like the vita, but if you look at the sales wich where abysmal and the weak software sales. I don't blame them after all they are a full profit company🤷🏽♂️
@@BenRU-vid25 agree however it's not that I wouldn't buy a PS5 (cuz I really want one) it's more that I have a library of VR games that I won't be able to access
This helped me a lot, thank you ☺ Regarding the library: from a VR enthusiast point of view you are right. Having owned Quest 2 and a PCVR Headset, the enthusiast has played most games. My point of view as never had Quest 2: >Star Wars and Resident Evil are also games I never played before. >Walking Dead Saints and Sinners: I stopped playing on Pico 4, because in dark areas I could barely see something. So again PSVR2 comes in. >Gran Turismo VR. Unfortunately I have no more space in my pc room, was driving Dirt2 with a little wheel rack. Again the PS5 helps me cause it is movable, don't want to carry my gaming pc through the house ;-) I am convinced there are many more like me nnnnn
I get that the Sony reps might be giving you a better than out-of-the-box experience by having you wear headphones over earbuds but it might also be a hygiene thing. It would be kind of gross to share earbuds with all the people testing the PS VR 2, even if they wipe them down after each use.
Thank you, Bradley, there is no doubt that you are the best of the best (and the hell with the rest)... in your class of world-class VR tech journalists, and VR news reporters ... keep up the great work!!!
For spending $1050 on a great console system and an optional vr add on this is still below prosumer grade pc vr cost. Sony is playing a long game again here. And if you wern't around or forgot about their bluray win then you probably didn't learn that. The specs, the entry level price point and where both target the market are what's important to point out here. Every other option is either too far above or too far below price point and/or performance. I'm pretty sure they're on to something again. It's possible here that once pc mods come out to take advantage of this low cost high quality and feature rich headset that non ps5 owners might flock to it because it will be good enough at the right price point. Remember, this is SONY. They have a high standard for quality, innovation, and putting their weight in places that gives themselves and consumers no other better options.
The PSVR1 mk 2 and the PSVR2 have built in ear buds for audio and they work fine for PSVR1 mk 2, that's what I use. You can't expect to share ear wax with everyone going to a show demo though, which is why they plug in headphones for demos. Both the ear buds and headphones support Tempest 3D audio with headset position tracking.
Thanks brad, this was a great comprehensive over view and youre my go to man for all this stuff that I cant research. Appreciate you and im pretty excited to develop for this headset. I think my next title will be ps2 vr compatable.. ready for it
Brad, I'm SO grateful for your impressions 👍. I had a PS VR1 headset, a PS4 PRO and a load of games. But the artificial blurring between native frames (basically the AI/artificial image reproduction) literally looked like seeing double-image trails during fast moving scenes or fast movement, and kept giving me serious headaches after a couple hours, to the point of feeling nauseous. I know there are perhaps quite a few PS VR1 users who don't experience this, or are not sensitive to low frame rates (in the VR context of frame rate requirements of course). Some games had those problems much worse than others, and I think it has something to do with how high the native frame rate of a particular game is, as it was never a 'VR legs' issue, IPD adjustment issue, or faulty headset issue (I had tried two PS VR1 headsets after sending one back to Sony). I even went so far as to buy prescription lenses for about £75 from VR Wave for the headset. But ever since Heaney from Upload VR and that dude from Kinda Funny Games mentioned from their hands-on that PS VR2 still has this issue, I've basically been holding back. I'll try this headset out before taking the plunge on the console and headset as I would only want it for VR. Understandably, if some or most people don't experience this issue, that's actually a really good thing and I'm glad that they will be able to enjoy this headset to the fullest. Unfortunately for me, it's *definitely* not a case of 'looking for faults', as many others who don't experience this issue simply like to chalk it up to.
I know u mentioned some to the visuals but would u say that even beyond all the conference mess around u would u say that u felt like u were actually in that environment, like would it blow someone’s mind who isn’t familiar with vr? Did the tall neck actually look and feel tall
I'm super hyped! Can't wait for Feb 22!! I got one for my nephew as well!! He lost his shit 3yrs ago when the 5 dropped and I was handing them out like Willy Wonka. He's gonna surely loose it over the psvr2!! God I luv being that one Kool uncle 😆
This headset has the potential to be the next best selling PC VR hmd if somehow it is properly modded to be STEAM VR compatible. For sure, this would happen, but how good and how legal? We'll see!
I hope it sells well so we can get atleast 20 AAA, 40 AA games and 60 Indie games in the next 5 years. Sony only needs to make 10 of those. If it sells well, developers will get on to make more.
Sony will also most likely be subsidizing more third party AAA games to include VR support for their games like they did with RE7 and are now doing with RE8!
Hi Brad. First time viewing your content. Very balanced and non hyped. Question. In terms of the visuals. How would you rate it to flat screen horizon 2. Is it on par with or noticeably lower fidelity? Cheers and look forward to more in dept analysis.
Well, it's quite an unfair comparison because the PS5 has to render a view twice rather than once. Also at a much higher frame rate. So the quality you can push on a "flat game" at 30-60fps is gonna have way more detail than a VR game on the same system That being said: the graphics were quite wonderful. And felt AAA
@@SadlyItsBradley thankyou so much for the prompt reply. Yes that's what I thought. A while back when the first round of journalists got hands on time...one guy said it didn't feel like a vr version of a horizon game... It felt like an actual horizon game. Which prompted my question. But also the fact that I thought that for hybrid games like this, I had initially read that the idea was to save costs by using the same in game assets etc. I do like how you didn't hype it up to the nth degree. Cheers mate and keep up the fab work :)
How was the HDR? I might be wrong but I believe the PSVR2 will be the first headset available to the consumer with a HDR screen. How are the black levels and overall contrast and colour? How natural is the vibrancy? Cheers Brad.
I feel the vibrancy was taking so huge artistic integrities (same as the non vr horizon games) so it’s hard to judge that aspect. But I felt the color space was really notable
@@SadlyItsBradley Were the Blacks 'true' black this time around, or were they a dark shade of grey like with the PSVR1? I just wish they could eliminate motion judder and blur completely.
PSVR2 can be used with the $399 PS5 DE and PSVR1 (if you bought the camera + 2 Move controllers) was not really much cheaper than PSVR2 which includes the controllers.
I'm hoping they have eye calibration profiles. If my wife or a buddy comes over fairly often, I'd like to just select a different calibration profile rather than needing to reset it every time.
I wonder if it might be linked to your user account. So if your wife or buddy have their own account on your PS5, they could log-in and have it all sync up.
With PSVR1 you needed to face the camera at all times, which meant you had this cable hanging from the back of your head, going across your side (or between your legs) to where the console and camera are placed in front of you. Am I right that with PSVR 2 it doesn't matter which position you're facing? So you could face opposite direction of your console which eliminates having a cable going along your side, which prevents getting entangled with your hands during quick reflex games like Beat Saber (and less pull on your head)?
As someone only interested in VR for gaming, and knowing how refreshingly brutal you are compared to other VR influencers that are scared of upsetting anyone that might send them free shit, this video has me justifiably hyped for PS VR2. That you highlight its weaknesses and unknown factors yet still enjoyed it and recommend it is very high praise. I hope PlayStation can deQuestify VR gaming over the next few years, with studios targeting PS VR2 and PCVR instead of primarily Quest. I can understand why PS VR2 headsets can't officially be supported by PCVR with the economics of closed market ecosystems like consoles are based around, but I wish Sony and Valve could come to some kind of agreement to release each other's first-party VR games on each others platforms. Even if it's by means of timed exclusivity. They could both afford to greenlight bigger AAA games with a combined market. Gamers on either platform would benefit. Let's get Half-Life: Alyx on PS VR2, and Horizon: Call of the Mountain on SteamVR. Let the Half-Life: Alyx on PS VR2 sales contribute towards a follow up title, and vice versa. Together they could rule the gelexeh, and make VR games not always some cartoonish small scope Unity powered Quest title.
Nice review. I have to ask, did you get a chance to try the newest crystal prototype , and if so have they addressed any of the negatives from your last review ?
Hi Brad, since its not pancake lense, does sweet spot on the lense satisfying? And also does haptic on the controller strong enough to satisfy you? Thanks Brad
The fresnel lenses used in the vr2 aren’t normal fresnel lenses they are a special kind sony developed and panted a while back, of course they aren’t as good as pancake lenses but the sweet-spot has been increased and things like god rays and glare have been minimised to a great extent
Why is everyone complaining about the “PlayStation VR Headset” not being PC compatible? It will most likely never be compatible since Sony want customers in the PS Store and which is where most of the profit will come from as I truly believe that they are losing money on the hardware but are hoping to make money on Games and Software.
I’m gonna get one for sure. I got the psvr 1 in 2021, and the exclusives like Iron Man VR, Blood and Truth and Astro Bot Rescue Mission are incredible. It seems like Playstation is just turning all those good things up to eleven. It’s gonna be a huge upgrade with games like Horizon Call of the Mountain, Re8 VR and GT7 VR! Especially considering this is just the beginning. Talking about the price, it’s not unreasonable imo. It’s gonna provide experiences and technology that are equivalent to those of a pretty high end pc VR headset. Pcvr costs a lot more to setup. So, considering it’s specs and the games it has, psvr2 is not unreasonable.
The reason why they use headphones to people trying it in the booth is mainly for noise cancellation and hygienic reasons. Earbuds would get dirty quickly.
Too bad to hear that the reprojection blur is persisting. Excited to get mine, but this is the thing I’ve been most concerned about. Good first impression!
Not gonna lie, the one thing from this video that has recently bothered me is the comment on reprojection. I don't think I've experienced it much, maybe won't even notice it, but I want the best experienced possible. There are 3 ways I could think of where reprojection won't be an issue. 1. The devs better optimize the game. Course, there is only a month left so if they were to better optimize it, it would take a while in a form of a patch or update. 2. Give us graphics option. An option where the refresh rate is true 90-120 fps, but graphics is turned down. 3. If there would ever be a ps5 pro, that's when the devs take advantage of that system's power and we get the true 90-120 fps. Honestly, I think I just wanted to vent you know? Does make me feel better. Either way, still can't wait to get my hands on them and hopefully most games won't rely on reprojection, well as long as it isn't an issue to me and is implemented right.
I wish it had detachable cable. Pico 4 with VD just raised the bar for me in terms of comfort and freedom. At least PSVR 2 has eye tracking and the games will be well optimized for it
From what i've read the cable is detachable (probably due to snags etc and it wearing out) but fingers crossed on a wifi/bluetooth add on in the future.🤞
