In todays video I want to talk about a new PlayStation 2 adapter I just bought. The PORTTA component to HDMI adapter.
Does it work on a PAL PlayStation 2 system?
Is it any good?
Using an Elgato HD60 S with this adapter is a little frustrating
as I mention in the video. Some games also seem blurry in the game
capture but when connected to a TV/monitor the image looks really good.
Don't know why the capture seems so blurry with games like Outrun "3D" and Golden Axe "3D".

Yeah I've noticed with some Adapters, you plug it in and the display becomes very dark, to the point where it was better to stay with the component cables rather than the HDMI converter. I hear the SUNNATCH converters are good though.

Which portta is better for ps2 ntsc u american/canadian region the 1 with usb cable or the ac cable plugged to a wall outlet?? As the power source to the device

Portta should be an ok option, an even better option should be ElectronPulse from Electron Shepherd, but the absolute best option should be a Retrotink 4K but that is expensive.

A good cheap option that would allow PS1 games is RAD2X, the downside of it is that 480p gaming on PS2 doesn't work, but you should be able to play any PS1 and PS2 game on it as there isn't a 480p only game on PS2 as far as I know.

Thank you for letting me know about these adapters 👍😃 I will have to see some reviews. Specially for the RAD2X 😄 100% agree about the Retrotinks, looks like they work very well but are expensive 😅 I like the PORTTA adapter quite abit to just play the games. I just made a video about the LevelHike PS2 HDMI which is my main adapter for RU-vid. This adapter also works quite well with PS1 games. Thank you for watching the video and taking the time to comment too. I really appreciate it 👍😁

Hi mate, i know you touched on it a little bit in the video, but is it better to change the display to 4:3 in the ps2 settings? I can also change my monitor display to 4:3, but im new to all this and am not sure what's best. Thanks

Hello there 😃. Well this depends on the game really... The PS2 itself cannot be set to a 4:3 aspect ratio. You do have a 4:3 setting in the main options on start-up but that doesn't change the aspect ratio itself ( weirdly 😓 ). The games settings are what usually denote what aspect ratio you need. Alot are set to 4:3 but others can be set to 16:9. I would say either/or is good to use. I have an adapter with a 4:3/16:9 toggle (not the PORTTA) and I use the hardware ratio switch all the time as some games display in widescreen 😃 If I am using the PORTTA adapter just to play games then I use the TV setting to set the image to 4:3 😆 If you have an adapter with a 16:9/4:3 toggle this is pretty good and easy to use ( the PORTTA HDMI does not have one 😓 ). The TV 4:3 settings work but always seem to not display the image properly, depending on the TV. The image always seems a little narrow and usually stretched vertically but display the image in a 4:3-ish ratio 🤣 It all depends on how you want a game to display. Do you want a facsimile of 4:3 or just not want the image stretched out on the whole screen. I use both 4:3 hardware switches on adapters and/or TV settings. I hope this makes sense and helps 😂. Sorry for the long reply 😅. Thank you for watching one of my videos and commenting too 👍😁

@QuesterMage really appreciate the reply, I understand now 😅 can I ask what hardware you use that has the 16:9/4:3 toggle?

I'm glad I could be of some help 👍😄. I am not an expert by any measure though, I just enjoy playing older games and tinkering with what works with what 🤣. For the channel I ususally use the LevelHike HDMI adapter. I am working on a video for this adapter too. There are good things and bad though... If you are in the PAL region using a stock PS2 then games that run at 50hz (most games) do not fully display on screen. Some of the image is cut off. If games run at 60hz then the adapter is pretty good to play games and use with an Elgato HD 60S. It displays using RGB and not component so the image quality is not as good. The adapter heats up a bit too when in use. Some good things are a hardware 4:3/16:9 toggle, works with Elgato HD60S well and is compatible with PS1 Games which is great 👍😃🏆🥇. These are more things which I will talk about in the video but I am taking my time to check it properly. Hopefully you will find that useful too 👍😁

Thank you so much 👍🥇😆 These are the conversations I enjoy most, people that enjoy the same hobby helping each other 🥇🏆😃 I find that the adapter needed also depends on the monitor/TV too. The PORTTA is very good just to play games as it can play 50hz, 60hz and use progressive scan. But no PS1 games 😓. Currently working on a Rampage PS2 and No Man's Sky Switch video which hopefully will be out soon 😅. The LevelHike video I will prioritise for you so maybe next week 👍😃

Sorry for the long response in advance 😊. I hope this helps 👍😁 Please keep in mind that this was tested with a PAL PS2 using the adapter. I measured these with a measuring tape for each corner and the dimensions were a little difficult to read, so these measurements are approximate values. I tested the PORTTA Component to HDMI adapter with 3 games, on two types of screen a 27" Monitor set to full aspect ratio and 27" Curved TV set to 16:9 (with the adapter it did not allow me to select screen fit) as I thought this might have different results. TL = Top Left TR = Top Right BL = Bottom Left BR = Bottom Right Dragon Quest VIII: 50hz Monitor - Border TL - 1.5 inch / 3.8cm BL - 1.5 inch / 3.8cm TR - 1.7 inch / 4.3cm BR - 1.7 inch / 4.3cm Curved TV - Border TL - 0.9 inch / 2.2cm BL - 0.9 inch / 2.2cm TR - 1 inch / 2.5cm BR - 1 inch / 2.5cm SEGA Mega Drive Collection 60hz ( 50hz - has borders ) Monitor - Border TL - 0.5 inch / 1.3cm BL - 0.8 inch / 1.9cm TR - 0.5 inch / 1.3cm BR - 0.8 inch / 1.9cm Curved TV - Border No Border - Full screen Tekken 5 60hz ( 50hz - has borders ) Monitor - Border TL - 1.4 inch / 3.5cm BL - 1.4 inch / 3.5cm TR - 1.4 inch / 3.5cm BR - 1.4 inch / 3.5cm Curved TV - Border Vertical Border only - 1.7cm / 0.7 inch each side After checking this for you it seems that the PORTTA adapter reacts differently to different screens. So it would be difficult to say how much of the game screen you would be able to see o your TV/Monitor. I still hope this comments helps 👍😁 Thanks again for watching the video, commenting and waiting for this reply 🥇🏆

Like I said it would be difficult to know how the PORTTA adapter would display on your TV 😓 As you saw in my last reply, I tested three games with two screens and the results varied. I don't know of any other way that this could be fixed... Sorry 😔 Hopefully, someone more knowledgeable with these adapters and TV's will see your comment and will recommend a "fix" for you 👍😁

So I bought 2 of these after this video. And this thing is awful. There is noise all over the screen. Now I’m down 40 bucks and I still can’t play my ps2 or original Xbox on my oled

I have unplugged everything in the room but the tv,console and portta. Even tried another tv and a few component cables. Same results.
@QuesterMage
@QuesterMage 2 месяца назад
That's weird... 🤔 What type of noise are you getting on the TV? What games did you try? (If I have the same games I will test them) What type of PS2 original or slim? Games at 50hz/60hz? Progressive Scan on or off? Are you in the PAL region? Please let me know so I can test this and potentially make a follow-up video.

@@QuesterMage they are vertical lines moving horizontal across the image. NTSC 60. I tried jak and daxter. Pryzm. Gauntlet dark legacy and hunter wayward. My ps2 is the original model from launch. But I also have a soft modded original Xbox. The issue persists across all games on all emulators I’ve tried.

Thanks for replying 👍😃 Comments like yours are a big reason why I ask for viewers to comment. We can then discuss any issues for other viewers to see and potentially inform us of a fix 🏆😄 So from what I gather the lines are moving diagonally across the screen... 🤔 I did not see this while playing any games so far on a PAL PS2 original. Maybe I didn't see this as I am using a PAL PS2... Either way, I am going to test this more to see if these lines appear and what is causing them. Unfortunately, I don't have any of those games 😓 Do they use progressive scan or are you running them native 60hz? (Super jealous that you have Gauntlet Dark Legacy 🤣) I would suggest you return the adapters for a refund though. Don't loose out if you don't have to 👍 Also I would say to leave a review with your experience if you bought these adapters online on the website you bought them. Thank you for watching the video and for taking the time to share your experience. I really appreciate feedback 🏆👍😁

I'm very much considering nabbing one of these adapters. Playing some games on the PS3 through backwards compatibility is so hit or miss and a massive pain in the arse. Cheeky question - but you wouldn't happen to have the link to the adapter at all, would ya? Many thanks, and thanks for the incredibly informative vid!

Thanks for watching the video and for leaving a comment too. I'm happy if the video helped 👍😁 I don't have the link but if you type something like Component to HDMI Converter, Portta PS2 into Amazon that should bring up the PORTTA PS2 to HDMI adapter 😄 Also, make sure your have a good set of component cables for your Playstation 2 too 👍😃

@@QuesterMage Sounds good, much obliged! I think I still have the cables floating about somewhere, if not they're fairly cheap, they usually pop up on Amazon with the whole "People who bought this also bought this" so I'm sure I'll be sorted! Another question, not sure if you'll have the answer, but I have two capture cards, an HD60 S which I use for the 360, and an HD60 X for the PS3. Would it be more ideal using the X or the S?
@QuesterMage
@QuesterMage 4 месяца назад
Glad I could be of some help 👍😁 If you want to capture footage for online videos/streaming, like I said in the video the PORTTA is a bit finicky... The quality of the capture is good but it cuts out alot due to the resolution changes whilst using an Elgato HD 60S ( which is what I use ). I have also noticed recently there is some shadowing artifacts when playing 3D games during capture too. Unfortunately, I have no idea about the HD60X... 🤔 Is it any good? If you get the PORTTA adapter do let me know if it works well with the HD60X 👍😄
@Dan-Bartlett
@Dan-Bartlett 4 месяца назад
@@QuesterMage The X is really good, it captures the PS2 footage through the PS3 crystal clear. Of course, you need to use a splitter to bypass the HD encryption. But I've noticed with the S there's some picture grain and things do look a bit fluffy around the edges, as I noticed with Forza 2. But, (don't worry I'm not advertising) if you have a gander at my MotoGP PS2 vids, which is being played through the PS3, it's really sharp. The only thing I need to do is slightly stretch the image because of the black bars top and bottom. But the S and X are both fantastic in their own right, the X is just more sharper quality
