Guys guys. Not sure if the guy made an other video but the problem is right. The solution isn't. It works yes but its an easy fix and it's better than a tape. On the left side of the laser (black triangleish) they is a a space shape like a u. You just need to put it in between the metal. That's it. It make the noice because the laser doesn't go under the circle when it's supposed to. Your welcome 😃
Absolute legend. My PS2 was making the same grinding noise. The ribbon cable at the laser end had come out, pushed back in with tweezers and works fine. Wouldn't have figured it out without this video, thanks a lot dude.
YOU ARE A GENIUS!!! I couldn't find any gum brands with foil wrappers but I bought some LifeSavers mints with the foil wrapper and it worked like a charm. SOOOOO thankful for your video and tip!! My old PS2 slim that I couldn't get to work normally for over 4 years now works like new!!! 5 stars.
I followed this sort of. It was corrosion on a rail stopping the laser moving smoothly for me. Used vinegar and a little ball of tinfoil to clean it. Cleaned in the plastic runners on the sled bit too. Works perfectly now. Thanks for the inspiration on the button.
Clean and strip the old grease off the two rail bars on the lens rack with contact cleaner. Use a toothbrush to clean off any old grease on the worm gear. Clean the sensor switches with contact cleaner. Re-added lithium grease on the rails only (if you use it on plastic, it degrades it) and it should work flawlessly.
Thanks for getting me on the correct path. After driving myself crazy by trying your fix, I discovered that I just had to replace the big brown ribbon cable completely. I seriously wouldn't have made that discovery without your help.
Thank you so much brother. I was my wife's hero for being able to fix her ps2. Not to find the other 4 or so we have in storage that were having the same issue.
Hey Evan or anyone that can help, my ps2 slim is making that noise and I put an piece of foil instead of gum wrapper to fix it. It did help but my ps2 still makes that noise anytime I try and to play a game. What could be the issue?
Looking to fix a fat and for some reason this video made me realize that I should check the ribbon cables thanks to 0:10. Turned out when I went in to replace the clock battery that a ribbon cable came out after putting it back together. I got it working again but it would stop after a few minutes like the cable is coming loose. Took a few attempts but I had to put a piece of electrical tape to hold it and now so far no issues. I don't know if I wasn't putting the ribbon cable all way in but I was pressing it as far as I could get it to go so not sure why it's loose. As long as the electrical tape holds I should be good.
Mine does too but the thing is that the audio in my games is messed up. You can hear the effects but not the background music. Does someone knows how to fix this?
What if mine will still grind even if I put a foil wrapper or my finger there, it will not have the red blinking like yours when I put my finger. What's the problem, if anyone knows, pls help tq.
Is the PS2 supposed to make a small clicking noises during the Smackdown in game cutscene in Smackdown Just Bring It? It doesn’t make the clicking sounds on any other game. Is something wrong with my PS2? or is this normal?
Found out what was the issue with mine, it was that brown-cable that had wasn't attached properly. If this video doesn't work, try moving the cable in the connector while it's grinding.
hmm I seem to be out of luck. the button isn't working at all even if I stop it with my finger ah I took it apart, one of connections of the button to the board is broken, so I need to soder that tiny tiny thing
I know this video is 5 years old now but you didn't need the gum wrapper. The little clear ish/white plastic thing under the silver bar is put on upside down and backwords. That is what the Lazer is hitting and preventing it from coming down far enough to hit the switch. It's easy to tell because the square part is showing on yours and it should be the t shaped bit. This means it's upside down and backwords.
that's the same way i fixed the r button on my gba sp only I put tiny pieces of duct tape inside a bit more professional but thanks so much I never wpuld have guessed that myself so weird how these buttons need to press in farther as they age
Which model is that? You're laser ribbon is totally reversed of my 90001 that I recently bought off eBay. I cannot believe you had to place something there to stop the sled before making contact with the spindle. Insane. Anyway thanks for answering a question I had, as to does the unit read from inside, out. I'm also having the disc scratching from the ribbon. So I ordered a couple, in hopes to cure that. My old PS2 was a fat model. So I never had problems. But in defense. It was brand new. Not 13. Or whatever this one is. Thanks 👍
I swear my ps2 slim scph-70012 is a hell spawn to fix every single time I fix one problem it spawns another, it all started when I got the console it turned it on and worked fine, then I got gta vice city (a dvd rom game) and it wouldn’t read but it read compact discs (blue bottom) so then I open it up change the voltage, fine right? Wrong the ribbon cable now scratches the disc I fix that it makes this problem. I’ll edit this if it makes another problem
Hey Evan, highly doubt you will see this but i unfortunately have a very similar problem to yours. It grinds just as it did in your video, although i tried the gumwrapper and it still didnt work. i then tried placing my finger early like you did in the video. That part with the laser kept running into my finger and wouldnt move back to its original spot. also my laer didnt light up like yours did. what do ii do? buy that part as new?
My laser just comes down even when i touch its sensor . i have removed the lid off and have done as you did . But the laser still comes down with pressure . Pls do help(I have slim ps2)
Same though that was on my fat PS2. I will probably have to open my slim PS2 to replace the clock battery but I got to get a power supply brick for it first.
Hi. Im javing this problem too. The first problem i had is the ribbon scratxhing the disc so i tried to fix it. But now it wont read disc anymore and it makes that noise. I tried putting my finger like what u did, to test if its the problem, mine still keeps making that noise even when im using my finger to press the little button on your video. Pls help
i had this problem and I got fixed lubricating the worm gear with wd-40, also put some grease in it, I forgot what type of grease is needed to lube this thing, and my problem was fixed
Mine is making the noise is this video: playstation 2 slim grinding noise Posted By: scbene And ONLY makes the noise when there is a disc inserted. This video shows it making the noise without a disc. Not sure if the problems are the same. :(
Its a slim model help but i share it with you maybe it helps a little. Tight the screw next to the lens to the right(on the little iron)... if it doesnt work first you have to clean the dirt from that little long roll and the end of the little piece of iron (the plastic teeth.) A little help: unscrew the small iron and clean out the plastic at the end then screw it back again completely.. BOOM easy as that...
Mine seemed to hit the thing but I tried to do this anyway including lubricating the thing the laser rides on because it slides hard still not fixed any ideas?
Had the same issue with a PS2 79001 that I recently bought it was practically new but I'm assuming the previous owner touched the laser lens I cleaned it with a cotton swab and isopropyl tested it out before assembling and it's working perfectly as of right now. Look up how to clean the lens and don't over soak the swab
@@moichamoy2274 thanks ive tried that but maybe I over soaked the lens even if I wasn't trying to can't do much right now because somehow my brand new ribbon my dad put on was working fine the ps2 was working still making that sound just not as bad ig next day wouldn't work it was the ribbon theres a tiny tear on the new ribbon
@@zacharysmith4408 I go to an electronic repair school, that was my issue. The ribbon cable attached to the laser was torn, you can either order a new one for 30c or fix it XD
Mine isn't so much as a grinding sound as it is an occasional clicking sound that fades eventually, but sometimes this cause the system to not play certain games. The only time it's persisted is when I tried to play Mega Man Legends 2. I bought it secondhand and this did not happen at first with PS2 games. The seller says they never experienced this problem. I'm not very tech savvy so I'm kind of afraid of opening my poor system up XD Also, PS4 in the background: "Stop playing with my big brother all the time! I wanna be noticed!"
Update! I merely needed to clean the disc tray again with a can duster(the system was very dusty and dirty and required a thorough cleaning when I bought it) It has stopped the clicking sound, but the minor grinding sound it makes when playing Legends 2 persists. I assume it's just a matter of the game itself.

@@reevesjustin The DVD player cable (the one with L shape that has glue below), I fixed it by replacing a cable with a new one. I also broke the connector on the DVD player so I used a small piece of plastic to keep the cable in the connector.

LOL, who designed this trash? Slim models scratching discs because ribbon tape goes too high, it got problems with loose casings there you may need to put the tape on back lid sensor and now this grind. Man, the only way to use ps2 slims is OPL via LAN.
