Awesome vid. My PS4 pro was loud as fuck to the point had to turn my tv up to max volume just to hear it. Took my PS4 apart and the thermal paste was dry so changed that put it all back together and was quiet for a few mins then back to being loud so took it apart again this time took everything out to get to heat sink and that was packed with dust so no wondering it was heating up cleaned it all and put it all back together now pure silence which is awesome 😎. Only replaced the thermal paste on my PS4 and honestly there is a night and day difference in how different the noise profile is. Fan still kicks in during intense demands but subjectively this is at least 50% quieter. Amazing, thanks.

Still a very useful video in 2023! here are some pointers for anyone who wants to do this. For starters you can just get away with new Thermal Paste! the factory thermal paste that is on almost anything, be it a PS4 Pro or a AIO Cooler are just meh lol. With wear and tear over time, it loses it's effect with the amount of heat a PS4 Pro produces. For reference my thermal paste was barely even on the APU when I disassembled my PS4 Pro!! Tip 1: Start by disassembling the Power Supply first, this way you won't rip it off the motherboard!, if you disassemble the Power Supply and it still does not want to come out, you can keep everything unscrewed in the power supply area and start undoing the motherboard, I found that when I had both the motherboard and PSU unscrewed, the PSU easily came out on its own lol. Tip 2: Organize all the screws neatly somewhere you will not lose them! Tip 3: Take your time!, anyone can do this, even you that is reading this. It is tedious and will take time but will be worth it. Tip 4: Make sure to take photos to remember where what is connected!, this will help you out a ton!! Finally when I took apart the PS4 Pro to clean it and service the thermal Paste, it was surprisingly clean and I was shocked lol. I definitely recommend replacing the thermal paste as maintenance, BTW for anyone wondering, I used Noctua thermal paste!, good stuff!!

my ps4 pro was running even louder when I did this so I open it up and apply slightly put more paste and I notice something. the original thermal pads were not on the Vram chipset they were attached to the clamps that push down on them so I removed them and placed them back on the ram chipset, I don't know which one did the trick but WOW is running really quietly now.

Today i did the same to mine first release of ps4pro. Used both thermal grizzly pads and paste, but the second one was conductonaut. After an hour or so in stress mode i finally can't hear jet planes landing in my room :> Thanks!

The output heat should be higher if the thermal paste is better. The Core Temps is what should be lower, unless you have a thermal probe attached to the APU, you won't be able to tell.

I replaced the thermal paste on the APU and did a much cleaner job than factory standards. Ps4 Pro (2018) was almost dead silent and never overheated again.

Just did this and it seems to have worked wonders! Go figure the only part I broke is the first part, the dang hard drive cover. Oh well $5 on amazon for a replacement compared to $350 for a new PS4

Okay guys bear with me through this comment as I am excited haha. So I have had a pro now for a few years and it has always sounded like a space X rocket, I have tried thermal pads, fan maintenance, too quality thermal paste and nothing worked. I have taken apart my pro 16 times to analyze how I could resolve the over heating and loud fan. Step 1: Okay if you look on the back of your pro right above the connector ports there is a detachable center piece with vents and that section is where the hot air is flowing through the power supply and out. I removed this. Step 2: if you take of the top shell of your pro and look in the back you will wee more Vent, Now after much testing I realised that with these vents my pro is forcing hot air up into those vents and back into the pro so I put masking tape across the top of these vents and put the shell back on. Results: I played Assassins creed odyssey for 5 hours straight, Then death stranding, then ghost recon breakpoint and Each time the console Never over heated AND the fan never kicked into overdrive. Honestly it never even got loud enough to hear.

My PS4 pro is extremely quiet now from a really really noisy device! Thank you. In case anybody wondering, I didn’t put thermal pad and it’s still very quiet. Actually literally there is no sound with just thermal paste. I play games like COD and FIFA which are known to make the ps4 super loud

To anyone who is scared or on the fence to do this: I’m super clumsy and not very handy and I was able to do it and it makes the biggest difference. My launch model Pro is super quiet now.

The thermal paste application is completely wrong here - so please don't follow that bit of this otherwise nice video. PS4/Pro have an 'exposed' die with no heat-spreader. This means you must use the "spread" method where you cover the entire CPU/APU die with thermal paste. The pea-sized blob method shown here is for CPUs from the likes of AMD and Intel that have integrated heat-spreaders installed over the die.

I'm pretty sure you've put the thermal pads in the wrong place... I was following several guides while doing this myself and noticed that the pad placement doesn't make sense so I put an extra pad on to see where it would stick and it was the smaller chips that are recessed. Nonono who applies thermal grease like that? Put a drop of thermal grease on the APU and spread it with a plastic card so it is distributed as a thin layer. Then and only then your thermal grase is applied right.

Hi. Please check the video at 7:00. That are not memory modules. In fact, those are chokes. They do not require cooling on the ps4 pro. It's the vrm's that need it(the little black chips a few milimeters above. So you have put the thermal pads on the wrong place. It may fry your ps4 pro. The thermal paste usually is to put on top of the apu and not the heatsink. But the way you did it works also.

There are 2 screws from the bottom that holds the power supply you didnt mention to remove it. You mentioned it after you removed the power supply.

My paste will just have to do for now lol too tedious doing all this and putting back together. I have built many of custom PC's no prob. But this is different. The last time I tried working on a PS4 it didn't go so well. Too many things to go wrong imho. Will just have to settle for air compressor which I'm sure it desperately needs by now 😉 as far as new paste, yes I know it would help alot, I planned on using Arctic silver 5 as I always have for PC chips, but this bitch will have to lay where she is as far as im concerned, In that dept. As a PC player, that factory paste was just...oh god. SSD seems to be hit and miss. Some say it halves the time, other say it reduces by a few seconds. So I'm not fully convinced. I'd go with a Samsung 840 Pro though, but that can suck as it's only 256gb.

I've just had a go at this. It is not for the inexperienced. Don't try it if you can't afford a new ps4 or to have it repaired. My console wouldn't start after I did it but thankfully it was just a bent plug on the PSU

Just did this myself and now my Pro is whisper quiet even on God of War! It was pretty easy and only took about 30-40 mins and was well worth it. Great video!

What if you are trying to put the old heat pads back on cause some fell off? Is there a way to get them to stick again; i.e glue?

Not a lot of people know this but in the us they can't legally void your warranty because you removed the sticker and opened the PlayStation. That violates federal law and Sony allows it to be opened without voiding the warranty now. Google it. Those stickers are illegal.

Thanks to your video, I cleaned up the fans and heat sinks. The interesting thing was, there wasn't much dust in there. Replacing the Thermal pads and Thermal Paste really helped a lot. My PS4 sounded like a jet when playing Doom. Now it's much quieter and my fear of it melting down has subsided.

You should a added that you don’t have to remove the power supply first it took me 40 min or because i was trying remove it up just to come right off taking the back side of the PS4 apart by taking a step ahead now my PS4 cuts on for 2 seconds and cuts off smh

Thank you for uploading this! I bought this stuff, applied it in the correct places (saw/read your mistake, were all human) and wow its different alright! And my system was repeatedly cleaned out so I knew it wasn’t dust making the fan go crazy! Thanks for taking time to make this. Personally I would edit this video and have small arrows or something showing people where to put the first set of pads. Mind you, when you take the originals off it should be obvious where the new ones go, directly in their place 👍🏻

Shame that a lot of people (myself included) are watching from smart TVs, etc. where you CAN NOT SEE COMMENTS... there are so many mistakes in this video it just should not be on RU-vid... almost tore my PSU apart trying to remove it when I realized there might be something wrong with the video, and there was (this guy forgot to tell us to remove 2 screws on the other side). Also, he got the screwdriver type wrong, it's not JUST a T8, it's a TORX T8H (with the hole in the middle)... thought I was ready to go through this but nope, had to leave the whole thing on the table and go buy that goddamn screwdriver. And then the thermal pads... didn't have to read the comments to figure out how retarded that was, and RIP other user's consoles (assuming they reached that step). Disappointed.

Wtf.. where do I put the thermal paste on the CPU on the motherboard or on the shield /cover opposite the cpu like you did? So many have said you have to put it on the CPU.My brother in law successfully cleaned the heatsink which was God awful dirty, but he messed with the thermal paste, cleaning everything off without replacing it with new paste, now my PS4 makes more noise and shuts down and gives an error because of overheating. When the heatsink was full of dust , it worked fine though it sounded like a jet engine now the fans and heatsink are clean and now it overheats, oh the irony,😜

Haven't tried this yet, but I'm curious why you bought so much thermal paste. 1 gram ($6.99) should be enough, no? That's like a $20 price difference.

Thank you for your efforts. The thing that needs to happen, is SONY`s decision on applying Liquid Cooling to the next PS generation. Thats the first and last solution to both keeping the rig and our ears protected :)

I have 2 questions: Do i need to change the termal peds and what happens when you put to much of termal paste?

So I’ve done this to a few PS4’s and worked like a charm. Did one yesterday and now the control won’t connect. Checked the antenna, tried different cables, replaced the antenna from my old console and still nothing. Any ideas?

It looks like you spread the thermal paste to other pins instead of actually getting rid of it around the cpu. It probably won't be a problem, but just looks messy.

you really shouldnt speed up the parts when you are disassembling the system, especially for someone who has never done it before, it makes it very hard to follow, just an fyi, as this is major surgery for the ps4

I imagine since you were probably thermally throttling it got a little faster afterwards? I’m about to re-paste my PS3 and 4 with MX-4 and replace the thermal pads with K5 Pro so I’m hoping to get a bit more performance since it will run way way cooler I might use TG Kryonaut or Kingpin KPX I dunno yet on the PS4 I like having multiple thermal compounds around lol last computer I built was in 2003 AS5 was still one of the best I think next re-paste on my main AIO cooled gaming PC I’m gonna try TG kryonaut extreme, the Kingpin KPX I’m using now has been working great since I put it in my system on January 5 of this year still idling at 30C I looked it up it says Kingpin only lasts 6 months I’m past the 1/2 way mark and still no degradation I think ppl apply paste to thin these days I do the spread cause that’s how it was done back in the day and every since my first temp sensor board which was my last board the spread is the way to go I bought a pre-built they did grain of rice with AS5 I idled at 50C 2 mins into gaming I would be at 85C+ now I hit 56C max while gaming for several hours but I also changed all the fans to noctua’s A12x25 on the rad and then 3 x 1700rpm P12 Redux high performance as case fans way better than Alienware/dells OEM crap little off subject but thermal paste if properly applied last longer than people think is the point I was trying to make they say a lot of the high end paste have to be changed every six months my dads laptop has had TH kryonaut in it for 3 months it still idles at 39C max 56C I can’t make it throttle *( I tried to throttle both the APU/CPU at the same time only hit 56C not bad for a PC that did stay pegged at 60C and was slower than a turtle now it’s fast again )* at the AMD A6 throttles at 60C

That paste is a lot of shit also you do not need scissors or tweezers for the teardown all you need is the t8 and Philips screwdriver

So my power supply only has 4 screws. That one in the middle is just plastic. I try to pull the unit out and I honestly feel like I'm going to break it. I dont see anyone else with this problem and no info shows up for this issue. I pry and pry and the middle stays stuck. I'm trying to figure out why so has this happened to anyone else?

My PS4 pro is year old only but it got heat issue after an hour of gaming n it’s says Ps4 is hot n turns off. I’ve got it cleaned twice as well as change it’s thermal paste twice n tight my heatsink too but still issue has come up twice Same after week use. Any idea what is the issue here?

Is it necessary to add new thermal paste or is it ok to just clean the fan and heatsink?

I accidentally ordered 2.0 mm thick thermal pads. Will that mess it up?

I would just add when you screw back the pressure plates tighten all 4 screws evenly so the thermal paste spreads evenly as well

Good video. I know some other RU-vidrs have pointed this out but just before 5:00 make sure you've taken out all of the T8 screws on the metal bracket on the other side of the PS4 before removing the PSU....I slightly cracked the plastic cover that shields the PSU until I realised there were two T8 screws which needed to be removed! Also, I found the PSU connector cable virtually impossible to remove, so I left it connected. It's a bit of a pain in the arse when leaving the PSU connected but it is doable One thing I discovered was after applying the thermal paste (pea sized) the PS4 fans were louder than ever. This is the first time I've ever had this issue when applying thermal paste (I've applied it to many CPUs) - so I took the PS4 apart, applied more paste and spread it over the APU. The PS4 is now as quiet as a mouse.

if only a console could leverage lower temps and or better thermal pads and paste.

I finally did this to the latest Version of the PS4 Pro... with Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut & Thermal Grizzly Minus 8 Pads 1mm (for RAM & other contact-point), and no matter which Game or in-game Cutscene etc (GOW, Horizon, Spider-Man, The Last of Us Part 2, or COD), it just stays dead silent. So silent that i was worried if i had actually connected the fan. To hear the Pro in heavy workload situations, it need to get 5cm~10cm close with your ear, but it still remains nearly unhearable. Results are so insane. Before / After results incoming: Before: streamable.com/o252d7 After: streamable.com/e4a6zf (That click at the end is my phone hitting the Pro) PS: Audio recorded in one heavy scene from GOW, 24hrs between the test, and room temperature was the same as the day before. Have the latest released Pro revision, means it wasnt really dusty at all before. The difference is still day and night.

Fun fact right now I was about turn off my ps4 while watching this video and I was stretching my head looking up at the same time and I lost oxygen for a second to my head or something and I was on the floor with my ps4 on the floor too and I busted my lip

For those wondering just like I did " It really works ? Like REALLY ? " the answer is YES. I'm a french gamer, I tried everything, even changing thermal paste, cleaning everything in the pro, everytime the same god damn noise. I couldn't enjoy games such as Detroit Become Human, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, even games with lower graphics such as Apex Legends, Rocket League, etc. I couldn't find anything to solve this problem so I made a research in english, and inFound this video. I bought this grizzly paste, and the result is crazy : Silence. Real silence. I played Detroit for an hour, Assassin's creed for almost two hours, the ps4 was sooooo silent ! So yes, it really works and I thank you very much ! Really !
