Soon, you’ll be able to go wherever you want, whenever you please, because the Japanese tech giant, Sony Corporation, has unveiled a new set of VR controllers for the PlayStation 5.
The pair of controllers was just announced on the PlayStation Blog. They look very different from the PlayStation Move controllers used with the original PSVR. Gone is the glowing tracking orb; the controllers themselves look much closer to the Oculus Touch and Valve Index controllers, and now feature a tracking ring that runs over the user’s wrists when they hold the controller grips.
The controllers come with the same adaptive trigger technology found on the DualSense PS5 controller. Both controllers have tensions in their triggers, a tech which Sony plans to deploy in future VR games. When combined with well-balanced weighting, it should mean long VR sessions are easy on your hands. And just like on the DualSense controller, Sony has used adaptive triggers on both the left and right VR controllers as well as allowing them to convey haptic feedback for added immersion.
According to Hideaki Nishino, head of planning and management at PlayStation, finger touch detection enables users to make more natural gestures with their hands during gameplay. Sony is implementing analog sticks on both devices and, along with the trigger buttons, there are grip buttons that make up L1 and R1 respectively. Two face buttons are on either controller along with options and share buttons, plus the home button. Sony has also focused on allowing more natural gestures to be seen in virtual worlds, so the controllers are capable of tracking thumb, index, and middle finger movement without any buttons needing to be pressed. We can expect to see functionality similar to Valve’s Index Controllers here.
Sony is preparing to send out prototypes of this new controller to developers, so there should be a few VR games using all of the new features available to play when it launches.
