Man, I understand your frustration. We have one of those lanes here in rural Oregon (believe it or not) and when people FROM AROUND HERE stop it can create quite an ugly mess, including rear-enders that block ALL traffic. And in this heat, tempers will flare and that's where the ugly comes in. Drive safely out there, people, and remember: He who goes forth with a fifth on the Fourth may not come forth on the fifth.
Just like the On Ramp on the interstate. My Dad always told me not to stop and ponder, but to put your foot to the floor like you are on a runway trying to take off.
We have the same down here (in Australia). Reversed of course as, like our toilet water, everything goes around the other way. We too have the same problem with people suddenly deciding that they must stop instead of merging - much like they do when joining a freeway. All manner of jape and jolly occurs.
Jape and jolly? Is that what we are calling it? My wife is a CALM person - as in 'almost kicked out of the hospital for taking the piss because there is no way you can be in labour while calmly chatting away' calm. Idiots pulling that shit though? That right there is a front row seat to the kind of 'mild irritation' that would see a full-grown bloody cassowary making a straight about U-turn the fuck away. For those that don't know, when people say the chicken is descended from dinosaurs, the cassowary is the bird that missed the bus, skipped several tens of millions of years and decided 'stuff it, full on murder-bird works for me, I'll let the rest of you play with that whole evolution thing, I'm good'. They are the sorts of birds that would bring a tear to the eye of a t-rex.
@@sadwingsraging3044 To be fair if the guy in the circle is speeding you can get into an accident. How ever they are at fault if they rear end your car.
in this part of the world we have these merging lanes, but some Cities put lights and/or pedestrian crossings on them as well, but heck it is not that hard to work out what is going on, the signs are pretty simple, road signs are made for anyone smart enough to be able to drive, to understand them, even I from rural Australia knew what this meant.
Unless your City, in all their Bureaucratic brilliance, decides to put a Stop Sign just "around" that intersection where you would usually merge, causing all sort of rear end collisions. LOL
I feel your pain. Here in MA, we have a lot of rotaries aka traffic circles aka round-abouts. They seem to confuse everyone. However, when properly used, they are pretty dang efficient over waiting for a traffic light. Can definitely weed out the non-locals though. They just lose their minds.
AMEN! I'll never understand how people don't get these very simple lanes. Small town Texas, where I'm from, there are a lot of these. Invariably, somebody new to town, or traveling through, will stop with the light for the other two lanes. 🤦♀️
drive through these in the major metro''s like DFW and you will see accidents at them because people going straight merge into that lane the double white be damned
@candle86 True, and then get mad when they are ticketed. Because the big city folks think they are entitled to break the law. All believing THEY are the most important person on the road. The worst, however, Austin and Houston. I can manage Dallas and Ft. Worth, won't even attempt Austin or Houston.
@candle86 I understand. I live in a very small town. Unfortunately, it's where 3 major highways come together. Right where they join, we have one of these intersections. I would rather drive THROUGH downtown than take that intersection. Either way, it's about the same time. Mainly because the people passing through don't know how to use it.
The only time I almost rear ended somebody it was at one of these turns right by my parent's home when I was visiting them to help with the holidays or something. That was the same intersection where I pumped gas for the first time the week I obtained my driver's license -- and then pulled out to make a left hand turn and discovered that you need to look for a raised median. In a 1981 Buick Electra station wagon. Trying to turn it around with oncoming traffic. There was a police car in the gas station and looking back now I can recognize that they were being absolutely awesome to me once they realized that I wasn't a drunk idiot, just a earnest young idiot who was literally on his first trip ever driving on his own and refilling the gas tank because that's what dad said to do.
My Mom was pretty mellow, but she would lose her mind if she got behind someone stopping in the turn-out lane in front of Beaufort’s County Buildings! Same thing with the round abouts over in Bluffton! “What are you, a BLONDE?!?!”🤣🤣
In my area, it's the ones that have been driving for a long time. So long that it is now in question if they should continue, that have issues with the give it the beans peddle
On a slightly different note... I'm originally from the UK and it pisses me off to hell and back when people who are turning to the right come to a near fricking stop before making said turn. It's even worse if it's a turn lane.... WHY??? Alabama! *WHY*?
Dear god had a 4 lane traffic light out on the ride home the other day. No one treated it like a 4 way stop. I don't even think they knew that was what you are supposed to do.
Just so you know, in New Jersey, we have these lanes, and if you don't stop , you're gonna get a ticket. Why? Because there is a stop sign either above or below. I think the people visiting might be in locations that have this older style of intersection. Sorry, you can blame it on the D.O.T. There is even a trucker in Southern New Jersey. That does videos that show these intersections. He uploaded on RU-vid all the time and screams at people who don't stop.
While I appreciate the information, I would invite you over to our side of the pond where the roads aren't straight and are often only wide enough for one car even on a 2 way street, road markings are often obtuse and not clear, and you'll be sitting on the wrong side of the car driving on the wrong side of the road all while fumbling with a clutch and manual shifter. Good luck 😉
well thats nice we have those in Texas and you gotta yeild not because you are supposed to but folks will cut over that line from the other traffic to make the turn into walmart without caring, we stop in texas for our own survival
Pedestrian and bicycles Always have the right of way… always. Just because you own a car doesn’t mean you own the road. Try playing frogger in Amsterdam. Bike lanes, car traffic, a tram and repeat only reverse on other side.
As much as I would love to agree with you kimmo sabe', I can't. I live in ABQ, and well, that advice will get you killed. NOT ALL TURNS have a protected lane right around that corner. Let me explain, yes they have the median triangle piece , the lane ends approximately 30ft, yes feet, AFTER THE TURN (on a speed limit road of 45 with people going 50). Expecting someone to let you merge, is a fallacy. Hell - using your turn signal is viewed as a violation of your 4th amendment rights in my state. Must be defensive driving in my state, or "they" WILL take you out.
If you don't know the spot you are going to merge into before you got to the corner you already have a problem. The only question is can you get there before the spot passes and have to use the other one.
hey dadbod vet n mrs dadbod vet, just wanted to say happy 4th💫🇺🇲✌️ p.s if you lived in my county, the main driving rules are if u can b a hood ordinament,it has the right away.likewise fafo😂
Unless there's businesses within 100 ft of the turn. I don't know about you, good sir, but I've seen too many vehicles cross the intersection and jump into the right hand lane to turn with no turn signal. It's most probably because they feel like... Well... They feel like they own the road. Probably because they're to busy looking at they're phones.... I always slow down when making these turns. And I can honestly say my good man I've never been in a car accident. Ever. How about you sir, my splendid example of stalwart superfluous street smart safety ? Maybe you can just slow around the corner... Just saying
We call it a "Free-flow" lane and we have the same issues here with the permanently baffled. Don't even get me started on the apparently brain-breaking issues some people have with roundabouts.
