Welcome back, I'm glad you're here! Im Bringing a client back because she didnt seem to have much going on with her psoriasis last time. This client stopped taking her medicine during her pregnancy and wants to stay off of them while shes nursing. Instead of my regular treatment, im doing a simple scalp scratch, shampoo/conditioner, and some light therapy. We've discussed some minor changes to her diet along with some products to try. Unfortunatly, because she is nursing, she is reluctant to certain changes, Changes that could shorten or prolong the affected inflamed areas. We will keep a close eye on the affected areas so that they dont get any worse. The continued health of her nursing baby is our main priority right now, we hope that you stay along for more of her psoriasis scratches and watch her journey to a clearer scalp and healthier skin.

I know her heartache, it is so tiring. I had psoriasis for years, used shampoos, light therapy, ointments and lotions prescribed by dermatologists. Nothing worked. Until 12 years ago I was diagnosed with cancer. Chronic lymphocytic leukemia which required lots of chemo therapy and a Blood and Marrow transplant. The chemo got rid of my psoriasis and since the blood marrow transplant replaced my immune system no more psoriasis. The doctors were amazed and they are doing studies.

My dad had psoriasis. He had cancer too. Did chemo 3 times. After the first time. His psoriasis left and never returned.

I have psoriasis although not badly but I know it's an auto immune problem so I can understand how the transplant would work but would be interested to see how chemotherapy has had an effect.Also none of my family have psoriasis as it can be hereditary.

Your clients must really appreciate your completely non judgemental approach to this which is wonderful. At least by removing the plaque the light therapy can penetrate easier too

Thank you. That’s my goal with all of my “dandruff” clients. They don’t think their medicine or other treatments are as effective with the plaque covering their scalp. It usually doesn’t all come off when they shampoo at home. Thank you for the view And I appreciate your comment!

I was so embarrassed when I was in my teens I went to a salon to get a cut. I felt so angry and humiliated when the girl looked through my hair and in front of so many other customers said she couldn’t give me a cut because I had lice eggs in my hair. I was devastated! I told her that I had a skin disease and she refused to do my hair. Later found out it was a combination of seborrheic dermatitis and psoriasis. I am now 41 and can count the times on one hand that I’ve been back to a salon for a cut because of that. I always feel like I have to explain everything in detail and I definitely tell them before I sit down so I’m not embarrassed like I that ever again. Thank you for for doing what you’re doing for these People. A little kindness goes a long way.

Trust me it is when I’m not on my medication my entire scalp is covered so bad and I would itch and peal my whole head till it was bleeding along with just about my whole body

I heard that there is an injection that people can use that can treat severe psoriasis. It's a bit like an EpiPen. I don't know if it's available where the client is from but if her psoriasis is severe, then it may be worth a go? I don't know anything about this client, however, and I do not claim to know anything about their condition.

Happy to see people from different backgrounds being highlighted when it comes to this. It’s horrible when I see comments on black womens videos saying “you need to wash your hair” “stop wearing weave” “just let it breathe”.... that’s not how it works. I suspect I have psoriasis ands its sooooo incredibly frustrating. Soooo itchy. I’ve been to the doctor and they were pretty blasé about it because there’s not a ton you can do/they don’t know exactly what causes it. I feel for her but glad she has you 💙

It’s an auto immune disorder that causes it . There is really no cure . I have tried everything change of diet , medication . Everything u can imagine and I still have it

It’s a autoimmune condition that causes the immune system to think it needs to create skin cells at a very rapid rate (I’ve had it for over 10 years along with Hashimotos Thyroiditis which is another autoimmune disorder) there is no cure for it just treatments to help with symptoms. Also, generally as a rule if you have 1 autoimmune disorder you more in likely have another.

My mum has psoriasis and it really bothers her, particularly around her hair. I don't have it but I know a little about what it's like because I got a bite on the top of my head which got infected and was very itchy. It also cause a large part of my hair to fall out. Well done to all the people with psoriasis out there, for dealing with it and, in the case of this client, seeking treatment.

I have it! Wash my scalp daily. My dermatologist gave me the strongest topical steroid on the market. The raised parts went down but now my scalp is so dry nothing comes off. Scalp is still covered though. When anything does come off it looks and feel like tiny bits of writing paper. My mom has it too so it much be generic as well. We can wear fake earrings either. Must wear clips ons. Idk if that’s something related to our bodies rejecting things. She’s allergic to eye make up too. I hope that doesn’t happen to me.

The process is really saddening. I have dandruff (not dermatitis though) and my peers from my classes say that I have _lice_ Which really hurts. I can't begin to imagine what they get called out in public. I hope this helps make her feel more confident and comfortable from the psoriasis. Bless you for being an awesome person and helping people!

I feel for people who have to deal with these skin conditions, because it's uncomfortable, it's unpleasant to have to deal with, it's demoralizing, and it hurts your self esteem. I'm glad she has you as an understanding beautician to help her through it.

As a person with severe psoriasis I can't even tell you how amazing you are. I would have loved to have somebody non judgemental and as attentive and caring as you to treat my scalp the way you have for this client. The whole process must have felt so satisfying for her. Thank you kind lady x

I have psoriasis for 38 years all over my body Recently found something that helped me a lot. The patches retreated without medicine or uv treament. Never seen this...ever. Maybe it helps you. Try taking daily cold showers. Read up on the effects of cold exposure. Give it a month to work. Good luck. Take care.

It's not something that will heal, it's just something that's chronic and she will always have. She can manage the symptoms with light therapy, oral medication, topicals, and biologic injections like Tremfya or Skyrizi. But those don't cure her, they just help her manage and live with psoriasis. It's like diabetes, you just have to manage it, it won't be cured, but you can live perfectly fine if you take care of yourself.

i struggle with scalp psoriasis as well, and because of it i’m so scared to go to get a haircut, or dye my hair because im sadly embarrassed, and i’m not sure how they would react to seeing my scalp. Seeing this really helped me on knowing i am not alone, and it’s okay. Thank you.

i struggle with this fear, too. as professionals, they likely see people with scalp problems all the time and wouldn’t want you to be embarrassed. i told my hairdresser about it when i started having issues and she has been very kind and accepting. they only want you to be comfortable and if not, that’s on them not you and you’ll find someone else better. ❤️❤️

I will say, the next time i go due my hair, i’m just going to go back to my natural hair color, so that i don’t have to worry about constantly going to a hair dresser.

You are an angel. I love that you love to gently scratch the scalp free of dandruff in severe cases of psoriasis, eczema, seborrheic dermatitis, etc. You treat your clients so respectfully, reassuring them that it’s an autoimmune condition and not a fault of theirs.

I have psoriasis as well, for those who don't know it's an autoimmune disorder which doesn't have a specific solution. There isn't enough information on what causes it besides being genetic and it can flare up do to stress. I hope she's doing better, having a new born must be so hard.

My psoriasis is mainly abrasion and stress activated. When I was a teen, nothing the doctors did would help. But leaving my toxic family 100% helped calm it down.

First of all, you're an angel. I wish there were more hair dressers with even half of the knowledge and compassion that you have for your clients. I haven't seen a hairdresser in about 8 years because of my psoriasis. Most beauticians won't touch my head because of a health liability, or because they are off put by it. Not sure what type of machine your client has in her home, but I would love to know! Im Native American so I'm always seeking more natural remedies for health. You are amazing for spreading the word that this is not because people do not take care of themselves. I had dandruff starting at 7 then turned into psoriasis for the past 5 years. Have tried everything and pay so much money to feel normal and for people to not think I’m gross. I wash all the time. Now, I’m losing so much hair I’ve started buying wigs. Wigs are very expensive too. This condition just horrid. What makes it worse is the way people treat you for having it.

@@killerwolf881 it really does. I’ll never forget when I was 8 a new fresh out of school stylist screamed when she saw my flakes and called 4 other stylists over. The owner was the only one that would actually finish the hair cut. The others would not touch my head! That still effects me to this day. I tell stylists now that I have psoriasis to see if they’ll work with me. Not one has said no and bless them for it. I just dislike having to wear extensions bc I can only afford synthetic cheap ones.

@@killerwolf881 exactly!!! Wash it too much. Actually hair doesn’t need it daily but scalp does. My dermatologist gave me the strongest topical steroid available. It smells strongly of isopropyl alcohol. It dries my scalp even more. The raised parts are gone. Now it’s like tiny bits of paper. Scalp it covered but nothing really comes off of it anymore. Even the scratch! 🤣

As an African-American woman- getting my hair done is a wholistic experience nourishing my mind, my body, my spirit, and most importantly, my soul! I worked as a Dermatology medical assistant for a while, and I saw a lot of psoriasis patients that seemed to react differently for everything. Some did great with topical creams and ointments made for it, others failed those and had to go to oral, and others would do fantastic with biologics. honestly if light therapy and oral medication do well for her, then that's great!! The best success I've seen is people on the injections in terms of decreasing the area size, but people can still fail them like all medications and you gotta jump through hoops to get on them (basically fail all other treatments before biologics because I insurance doesn't wanna pay).

I personally dont deal with psoriasis..but i had a friend that did and the things she went through on a daily basis..just trying different remedies...to try to control it. She would talk about how it was consuming..doctors appts..new meds..treatments...my heart goes out to those who suffers from this...its no joke.

It’s a bitter sweet feeling. It does feel amazing but all the scratching does is make it worse. It’s so frustrating because you think eventually if you scratch long enough, there can’t possibly be any flakes left, but there always is…

@@RandyMarshMurica I feel your pain. My scalp is always dry and itchy unless my head has been recently shaved so I get tiny dusty flakes. I also have inverse psoriasis which occurs on my nuts, taint, and butt crack. Big flakes develop there. Scratching makes it worse but it is impossible not to. Especially during winter. It was terrible this winter. I need to move to where it's 75-80 with no humidity year round.

I’ve had psoriasis since I was 12 and it’s always been really bad on my scalp. In middle school, my classmates would always point out how I had so much “dandruff” and it was embarrassing. I myself knew it wasn’t just dandruff and that it was something that couldn’t be completely fixed. Knowing that has always been so disheartening, but stumbling upon this video has made me feel so comforted for some reason.

This is me. I have had psoriasis since I was 12 and I am 26 now. It covers over ten percent of my body. What she says in the beginning about how we have to go through a process to be presentable to the world is exactly right. We get used to having this issue it’s the rest of the world that has a larger problem with it. The medications to treat this are sooo damaging and you basically cannot have children while on it. And to think this is a cosmetic issue and we are taking injections for this.. maybe the world should be more understanding so sweet women like her don’t have to deal with the long term side effects of these medications.

anyone saying she doesn't have psoriasis and she has dry flakes scalp is wrong. Psoriasis like she said is different on everyone. Mine is similar (but a little worse right now) then this clients. I love the end result with her scalp. it looked so good and so much less red. wow. I wish I had a stylist to do this to help mine. I as well had a baby recently and now mine is worse. The lighting is kind of bad in this video you can see at the end her scalp is red in alot of places too from the psoriasis and im sure a little from the removal. great video im interested to see the results with this client

I have psoriasis and it’s so frustrating. Scalp psoriasis is my main issue but I also get in on and in my ears and on one of my eyelids, and random flare ups on other parts of my body - totally sympathise! Wish my hairdressers would give me a good scalp scratch, that looks like it would be such a relief!

I will say that light works. I noticed a big difference between the before and after. The redness especially on the left side of her head in back really calmed down. Thank God for you! You took your time and really focused on your client.

I suffer terribly with scalp Psorasis. The itching makes me insane. It’s annoying. It’s painful and gets on everything. My car is a hot mess!! I wish there was a cure for this. The only time I was free from this was when I was pregnant. My heart goes out to all sufferers.

I feel her pain I to have psoriasis and when not treated covers 90% of my body it itches it hurts and people look at me as if I’m a walking disease witch hurts more then having the psoriasis itself thank god for Humira that has helped me so much on Humira it’s like I don’t have it at all and makes me so happy about what I look like 😊😊😊😊for those who suffer with psoriasis your not alone and we psoriasis sufferers know how you feel

I know someone who has psoriasis. They watch their diet, because tomatoes and tomato products irritate or flairs it up. Vitamin A foods helps them tremendously, so they eat sweet potatoes and carrots. Plus they do some topical treatments

I just wanted to say that this is so painful 😭 I have psoriasis and eczema of the scalp and scratching or removing the plaque burns so bad (notice when her scalp turns bright red at points) and a lot of the time bleeds very easily. Idk if the antiseptic helps but I wanted to emphasize the fact that these treatments are not easy. This hurts, the prescription topicals hurt, the shampoos hurt, the judgment that we must not be doing anything to take care of this hurts...and we go through this on a regular basis. It is not easy trying to scrub a skin condition away. It’s so tiring and painful. I appreciate that you highlighted that this really isn’t funny.

@@brebre461 I think it’s feels good in the way that a waxing does- it hurts but you feel good about yourself after, like you’re fresh and feel presentable, you feel clean, and after a little bit the burning and inflammation goes away. I think it helps a lot of people feel good and is part of their self-care or maintenance routine but it isn’t an easy part! 🤍

My scalp was horrible for years. Removing eggs, gluten and most dairy really helped. I still have flakes but very minimally. Give diet changes time to work.

Diet changes change everything! Like drinking milk causes more acne to appear. Eating red meats (like steak) help boost metabolism.

That was my comment too. Inflammation does all kinds of crazy things from joint pain to insomnia. You'd never think food has anything to do with it until you see for yourself.

My skin, joint and bowel issues went away after removing gluten from my life. The hardest part was no one believed me saying gluten free is a fad. Okay, be that as it may, it worked for me when literally nothing else did. I *started* to see improvement in 2 weeks but it was a process, mostly from fooling myself that I could have cheat days all the time. Its not a diet, its "medicine." Fall off the horse, get right back on.

i was diagnosed with psoriasis in late 2017 after suffering from eczema my whole life and it’s been everywhere from my arms, legs, neck, eyes and face and scalp, and light therapy changed the game for me. i recommend everyone who has it try it! no topical or oral treatment has come close to the relief light therapy has given me.

oh, i forgot to mention changing my diet has been huge. my dermatologist never recommended this to me and it seems like most don’t but there’s so much research that ties food intolerance to psoriasis. im currently gluten and dairy free and plan on doing an elimination diet in the future to narrow down what bothers both my skin and my stomach. just thought i would mention in case anyone else is struggling.

@@gigi8091 Your situation sounds very similar to my other client. Her stress levels were crazy and her mental state was a little off. She absolutely benefitted from a hard lifestyle shift. After changing jobs and a hard diet change, she changed her life. You are so right, this has much more to do with the inside of the body than the out. In my opinion. Truthfully, I used to love to scratch dandruff like it was a sickness in itself. Watching this is almost as satisfying as doing it myself! Wow. I know it may sound crazy but I bet I am not alone. And I am in my late sixties.

I had bad scalp psoriasis as a child. It luckily faded as I got older. It's horribly embarrassing. Watch the things you say to others. Bodies just do weird stuff.

My daughter also have psoriasis and for her it's a stressful, painful and spiritual process. Seeing her go thru this is hard cause she have it all over her body, hair and face, we have try to teach her that shes is beautiful no matter what and no matter how long it takes me to put on medicine for her it's all worth it..

The worst part about psoriasis is how limited treatment is. You go through the topical treatments like steroids and tar, you try oral medication, you get injections, you do light therapy. What may work one day won’t work the next. You have flare-ups that can be triggered by something like stress, which I’m sure this lovely lady has been experiencing a lot of with a new baby around. Other people don’t understand it and mistreat you, so the psychological damage is immense. It’s a horrible experience all around. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

Poor girl. It must be so frustrating, painful and nerve wracking dealing with psoriasis. My ex-mother-in-law had it pretty bad and she said it was painful. It looked so inflamed and painful all the time. She didn’t want to wear bras or any tight clothing. She had to be extremely careful with creams, cosmetics, perfumes, soaps, etc.. My heart goes out to people who suffer with this condition. Side note: I bet being a new mom it’s so nice for her being in your chair and having her head scratched. Relaxing.

I can relate somewhat as I get eczema and psoriasis on my scalp but not to the degree your client has. Recently I have been suffering from seborricheic dermatitis (cradle cap in babies) which is painful around the neck and ears but have been using a cortisone and antifungal cream which has been amazing! It softens the skin and cools it, relieving the pain. I hope your client finds something that keeps it under control

I have issues with eczema. I get it on my arms, back, chest, head and most recently my neck and I love summer because the sun is a natural way for my skin to feel better and go away for a time being also I lived on the beach in NC and the salt water helped a lot. I also stopped eating bread and I drank almond milk instead of regular whole milk and my skin looked amazing. So I hope that it gets better for her. I also have a 2 month old baby almost 3.

I've had psoriasis for so long due to an autoimmune condition I inherited from my mum, the only things that's even relieved it a little is taking cbd every day but even then I still have stubborn areas. I use a metal flea comb for pets (not a nit comb, they tend to be flimsy) to scratch my scalp when I've slathered it with a conditioning treatment in the shower/ bath and it works well at lifting whatever plaques I have left. Sadly there will never be a permanent solution. I am also so glad to see how non judgemental you are about this condition. I wish your client all the best!

I got psoriasis when i was 14. Possibly i would not have taken below advice. So she will be hard to convince. You have psoriasis fir life. So maybe she will try later on I have psoriasis for 38 years all over my body Recently found something that helped me a lot. The patches retreated without medicine or uv treament. Never seen this...ever. Maybe it helps you. Try taking daily cold showers. Read up on the effects of cold exposure. Give it a month to work. Good luck. Take care.

I had it on my scalp when I was younger. My folks made me get brush cuts which I hated because my spots were visible and I would get embarrassed in school from comments. Looking back on it, it's actually better to keep it uncovered so it could get exposed to sunlight, which is good for it. I get Stelara injections now which seems to help greatly.

I’ve been dealing with scalp psoriasis for years! Certain foods like refined sugars, processed foods, gluten, and alcohol will trigger my flare ups. I’ve gone to a naturopath for other health issues in the past and the root cause of psoriasis they said is poor gut health and genetics. I find sea buckthorn oil massaged into the dry spots on my scalp helps sometimes!

I have eczema, which obviously is different from psoriasis, but it’s embarrassing and painful at times. I was bullied for it as a kid and I feel judged for it as an adult even though I know it’s just dry skin. My eczema isn’t just on my arms, chest, and face, but also on my scalp and if I start to sweat, my head itches and stings. It’s awful and I’m so glad you’re able to help people feel confident 💙 having a field day with your scalp is refreshing and I always feel so clean after I manage to get my dandruff mostly removed.
