This is a video on how to fix a loud umd drive on a PSP 2000 and 3000 (a 3000 is showcased in the video). Disassembly isn’t required. I use 3-in-one oil, but anything similar will work fine. A PSP 1000 can also be fixed with this method, but it’s a tighter space to work with.
If you need a replacement umd drive:

Mid Feb 2024, found my old psp 2001 which has been shoved in a drawer since 2008 when it started screeching. Plugged it in and it was still screaming so l looked up fix and followed his instructions. After less than 5 minutes worth of time it works perfect less than the need for a new battery. Thanks for the great tutorial, simple and to the point, worked like a charm.

Lol, I feel so old, but I'm glad to see (in the comments) that i aint the only one going back to one of their childhood consoles. PS: I air sprayed mine. Noise is still there but to a much tolerable level, some might even say "normal" 🤷.

This is the most helpful video for the 2000 psp. Every video has it being taken apart and I don't really want to do that. My silver one was making that god awful sound and it has the black tape cover you mentioned. With a pair of small pointy plyers I pulled it up and was able to grease the wheel on the left, also the small tiny rail the laser is on and now my beautiful PSP is quiet again!

This worked really well, my PSP went from worryingly screeching to quietly making zipping sounds (I hadn't used my PSP in years, so I forgot what it's supposed to sound like, but wow does this sound so much healthier now!). It was pretty easy to do, too, especially with a PSP Street where you can just take the whole back panel off. I saw another guide recomend sewing machine oil, I used that instead of 3-in-1 because I don't think that's available were I live... Worked like a charm, been enjoying diving back into the Patapon trilogy!

Just a note: DO NOT squirt oil directly into the PSP! Squirt some on a q-tip or another swab and then use that to lube up the gears! If you squirt directly it has a decent chance of leaking into your screen and ruining it!

Considering the laser drive is right next to the exposed part of the UMD, you should use as little oil as possible so it's not thrown onto the disc. A high-quality precision bearing oil would be better than 3-in-1 or WD-40, but maybe not worth the expense if this would be your only use for it.
@blakeblundell9001
@blakeblundell9001 6 месяцев назад
It’s best to only put a little oil in the umd motor hole, since that’ll fix the vast majority of movement problems. I only ever add a little oil to the worm gear area if several attempts with just the motor don’t fully fix the movement or sounds. So this video is a bit outdated for the process that I currently use

Got what was supposed to be a brand new Vibrant Blue 3000 that sounds like this. Seller then admitted it was used. I should not have to do this but looks like I will - the “Vice City Stories” game is unplayable. How often does this method need to be applied? I’m concerned the oil may gunk up eventually. Does the sticker have to be put back in place?
@blakeblundell9001
@blakeblundell9001 Год назад
You’d use this method once and you’ll be good to go for years. I’ve never had an issues after applying on hundreds of systems. Don’t put the sticker back on, since it doesn’t serve much purpose.

Questions is that sticker not doing anything? I assume Sony placed there for a reason maybe to hold it down applying more pressure... So it doesn't need to be there?
@blakeblundell9001
@blakeblundell9001 Год назад
The sticker is there to mostly keep dirt and crap out of the motor, but Sony must not have thought it helped much since half of 3000s never came with a sticker. It doesn’t need to be there, but the only reason to remove it would be to oil up the loud drive
