After suspecting Arthur had PSSM - I had him tested for PSSM 1, to which he was negative. I then had him tested for PSSM 2 and he came back N/P3, meaning he is positive for PSSM 2, Myofibrillar Myopathy. The gold standard for a PSSM 2 diagnosis in the UK is a muscle biopsy however, as Arthur is going through a lot at the moment, I have decided against (personal preference) and plan to alter his diet based on that fact he has PSSM 2. I had him tested by CAG through the 5 panel hair strand test.
Any support from people in a similar situation would be amazing!

This doesn't look like PSSM2 behavior in my opinion, obviously I'm not a vet, but did own a horse with PSSM, she couldn't canter at all at times, tied up, muscle cramping etc. Here in New Zealand we have a lot of grass issues that affect horses behavior, spookiness, overly sensitive, easily stimulated, short green grass exasperates the behavior, particularly bad in spring and autumn, however it can also be a problem if we have extended dry periods over summer and then get a large rainfall, most horses in NZ are fed magnesium supplements over these periods and a couple of tablespoons of salt daily to help with the potassium overload that the growing fresh grass causes. Could be totally irrelevant to your situation, however Arthurs behavior on the lunge looks very much like a NZ horse feeling way too good on short green rocket fuel grass.

PSSM2 is slightly different to PSSM1 and I have struggled in the past with Arthur’s canter. I have been given advice about making sure he’s rugged as it’s important to make sure their muscles are warm. So I’m doing that. The last few lunging sessions he’s been calm as a cucumber. I’m just giving it a few weeks and I’ll see how he is! Thank you so much for the supplement suggestions! X Haha! Well you know Susan. I really hope you are right because ‘feeling fresh would definitely be easier to cope with!’ X

I think you were very right Susan. I have just received Arthur’s blood results back and they are all stable. After the bone scan it revealed he also had facet joint syndrome but as you say, maybe he is just having a bit of fun 🙈

No thank you so much ☺️. I did used to do this but it didn’t actually work. I’ve since learnt that he had EMS and since changing his diet he’s become so perfect to handle and I’ve not had these bolting situations for the best part of a year 💚. Thank you for taking the time to respond xxx

@@thisirishcobcan I'm so glad u figured out what was going on ... friend of mine had a stud (Impressive bred) and was at her wits end she had taken him to countless trainers til they moved down here she was haven a tuff time on him the day I met her... the amount of metal and ropes she had on that horses head would make a heavy metal band take and run .. I struck up conversation with her after watch him move off and how he acted after she asked him for most things but as for lope or going down hill .I asked her if he'd been tested for psmm ... she said no MD I told her that she might want to have that looked jnto first thing . She contacted me two months later after getting my number from a mutual friend and told me that she had atotal different animal... and were becoming fast friends and enjoying life.. Again I'm so very glad that u and ur best buddies are haven a wonderful life together..BEST WISHES TO U BOTH ...
