you know for those of you who don't know who he really is, before his fame, he was known as the godfather of kpop. plss dont disrespect his good name, he earned his fanbase from kpop fans. his greatest hit isn't just about what brought him over internationally, he is well known in all over asia. he earned their respect not as an overnight sensation but bc he worked hard. psy is apart of ygentertainment and one day he will remain the godfather of kpop, as his friend g-dragon is the king of kpop/jpop
People have so much option as to what to watch on this channel but only see the celebrities, then complain about it. Psy is a success story, everyone can learn from that.
Adam W he still probably makes a lot more money then the three of us put together x 200... No matter what your opinion is about his music, he is still very successful at what he does, and everyone can learn from that.
Psy was warm and calmed all the time at Oxford; very different from being onstage. There were so much tear and sweat behind his amusement. Not a surprise, success will not fall from sky and hit you on the street.
Psy is not just a musician, he's also an accomplished neuroscientist, philosopher and economist. He's known for creating innovative solutions to neurotransmitter regulation problems which result in uncontrolled anger. His many accomplishments in economics are too numerous to name here. I'm so glad Oxford invited such an accomplished and serious individual to their institution.
From the beginning all PSY wanted to spread was joy and happiness and in his own way he is doing that. This just shows you how the world is changing in positive ways because we're accepting people for who they are, and PSY is helping that by being the most genuine person he can!
He made some mistakes when he was younger and sang some things in anger that he regrets now. We all made mistakes when we were young and those that didn't are liars. I think it is safe to continue liking him as a person and for his music.
He is brave enough to go up that stage and give a speech in English without any translator's help despite his lack of vocabularies and I respect that courage.
You are brave enough to leave a comment without a proper knowledge on how to look at a human being properly as you yourself is a delusional human being to think of yourself as someone of a value as you speak of someone else in a "passive-aggressive" condescending manner.
All successes have same key elements as described by Psy: 1) passion with your work you really love 2) perseverance with failure 3) focusing on creativity 4) doing you know the best 5) being yourself. A lesson taught through his amusement, could be even more prevailing.
Very interesting, I thought I was going to watch a few minutes but wind up watching from beginning to end. Very interesting insight on the road to Gangnam Style...thank you for sharing.
im surprised how judgemental some people are on here, theres lots to be gained and interpreted from many potential speakers. and whether you like it or not, he's made it big, you (probably) havent
Psy asking audience whether he should take down his trade- mark sunglasses was a fantastic way to bridge with his audience. This skillful salesmanship could be resulted from the oriental culture. He could be wild onstage, but this a gesture of humbleness. An interesting way to start his speech.
Based on fact that he is the most viewed in the world, it is worthwile enuf to inspire others. He is juz not good looking asian fat guy who has no any other advantage except for his passion. It is no wonder why we want to be all ear to this mysterious success story of the PSY.
I recently had to give a speech during one of my shows in Beijing and spoke in Mandarin. Something I have never done! Even for a native speaker who has lived in Australia for a long time, it is nerve wrecking!
What are you talking about? He's more than coherent. And also behind all this humour what he says is genial, so not only this guy has succeeded with his music but his whole view of life is genial.
i still can't get over that he sang songs from big names like lady gaga and beyonce it is just so great to have a major like psy and like jonathan said on his show heis the best thing to come out of korea since samsung lol ;) xx he is fantastic even though i'am not from asia am indeed from the uk but i would never judge asia in any way whatsoever and i most certinaly judge psy and his family good luck to you psy and all your family and career from lauren your forever fan
Fantastic video Thanks to share it with us We can know PSY a litle more and we can see he's a good person Hope it could be good for him in 2013 and later
I always hear him talking about how he isn't good-looking. Maybe part of my inability to understand with/agree with him on that is that I'm not Korean.... what I mean is perhaps there is some kinds of Korean beauty standards for men that I'm not aware of. I mean, okay, yes, he's a bit chubby maybe, but not really much at all, and, honestly, he just looks like he'd be wonderfully cuddley for anyone lucky enough to get to cuddle him. :-) I think he's a very good-looking man, very handsome and sexy, and he has a beautiful smile. And also his lovely and sweet personality make him beautiful. It is not all about the outside. As for being serious when he speaks English....that is a thing. I can't recall the name of the theory, but, I do some work with linguistics, and, yes, many people find that their personalities change a bit when they speak other languages. I find that, myself. I find I am much more direct in French, for example - but I don't know if this is really because my personality changes when I speak French....I think it might just be that I am forced to be more direct, since I'm not skilled enough to really ramble and blather, the way I do in my native language. :-)
Since the day of PSY's success, I have been a fan, since 2002 I have known this k pop star for more than 10 years. As a fellow trainee at Billboard, I think I can tell which charts he has been in. It can also be seen your relied sources are wrong. The "ohnotheydidn't" source in the millions, they have included a plural in million which should not have been there. In the "ukmix" it is a open message forum, meaning anyone can edit such message. Take a simple look at wikipedia or even billboard.
He attended Boston university, He has also lived in the United States for several years. That time is enough for him to be able to speak very well English. Quick side note, he later dropped out of college and spent his money his parents have him on drugs and alcohol. Though his parents never found out until later on.
He spoke better here than in Harvard, but he is a product of the internet. Also, he provided what people wants it, fun. I think this is why he got it, great Psy, if he had spoke in Korean he could have done better job.
Imagine my confusion atop a Korean mountain in the Summer of 2012 when I see the crowd of new starters going nuts for some slightly chubby singer in a silver shorts jumpsuit ensemble, going nuts on the dance floor of the stage...little did I know it was the K-Pop sensation Psy until I got back to Germany.
Fabulous communication skill. He described himself well in a warm contagious manner. I have not particularly tipped over with his Gamnang Style. But I do admire that he still remains easy-going; famousness hasn't drived him deviating from being himself.
He does attribute his "success" to other people. In fact he doesn't even consider "Gangnam Style" a success. If you watch his appearance on the Jonathan Ross show, he said that he did not do anything. That the popularity of Gangnam Style was not his doing, rather it was the peoples doings. To quote him directly he says, "I cannot call this success, because this is called phenomenon. Which means I don't do anything. People do it right? So this was by people, not by me."
At this moment you are correct. PSY admits himself that his success is a phenomenon. I wish him continued success, However, personally, I would much rather attend an IU concert or SMtown concert. SM always fills the house no matter where in the world they are
I think that people would change their minds about PSY when they see this talk. He was just really, say, honest. I like this, not 'cause it's so meaningful, so fascinating and inspiring like the one by SJ, but 'cause it's simply funny and honest :D
Everyone in whatever field is an intellect to that person. This debate in oxford union should be never underestimate what people are. there were open minded people here , even to homeless people on the street. they have their own mind of view on what they see and observe.
Yes, I do respect a lot, I think he one hundred percent deserves his success as a musician, what i am implying is simply i did not enjoy this speech, or rather story telling. I do believe his story is rather encouraging, I just did not believe it is a speech that can be easily done better, by anyone educated such as himself, or other people. Robert Downey Jr's speaking skills is incredible and he can engage the audience very well.
i believe not everyone is born to be a public speaker but everyone carries a life of personal stories to be told and shared to the world. as humans, our better selves will be to listen to the experience behind what's trying to be expressed rather than carry the prejudicial immaturity that limits us from becoming our best.
Media by itself is neutral. Just like gunpowder, Nobel not inventing it as a killing weapon. We just have to accept the media as part of our life; particularly with the Internet connection. I was never tip over by Gangnam Style. But Psy is a humble and being himself person, focusing on what he can do the best with extraordinary passion. His speech at Oxford depicted well why he deserved his success; far beyond the so called "phenomenon ".
Certainly you do not know anything about Steve Jobs. He has spent 3 months traveling around North India, where he learnt fluent Malayalam. After Apple's success, he went to India and gave speeches to students there, in Malayalam. His speech delivery was excellent and incredibly fluent. It was 55 and 2 months without speaking Malayalam.
come on guys, don't compare things if u are capable then make ur own things and talk.. always appreciate people on their work instead of insulting or harsh comments.... even i watched his vid and listen song its good had fun... even i watched his other commencement in harvard... its goood
PSY definitely gets my respect and I'm glad to see his success but to say he's the best thing to come out of Korea is a stretch. Korea has many artists that could easily go head to head with anyone in Europe or the U.S. Some of those boy bands he talked about (and girl groups) as well as individual artists are popular world wide. IU comes to mind right away. SNSD, SHINee, so many....
Does it seem kinda decadent and inappropriate to anybody that the union that once hosted speakers like Gandhi and Einstein is now hosting internet celebrities and pop stars? Not to deride those people (I like internet celebrities and pop stars) but it's quite a telling and depressing shift in priorities.
***** Einstein has assisted the invention of the most effective massacre weapon ever in the world and if by any chance u have read some books then u should've known that the famous E = mc^2 equation is actually not from him. And speaking of Gandhi, a upper-class Indian who hide behind the "peaceful" disguise and turning india into a chaotic state, u truly believes that he running the Great Britain out of India?
Elliott Chyi Nobody working on the Manhattan project could have predicted the cold war and how many of these bombs would have been produced. Also it wasn't just bombs that came out of it, nuclear energy was also a product and that has done humanity wonders. What difference would it have made if Gandhi was poor? In fact it was his education that allowed him to do what he did. He made sure the whole of India stopped cooperating with the colonists without resorting to violence, so yes he did run Great Britain out.
Lawl. Someone called me a right-winger based on a light social observation, despite the fact that I'm basically a card-carrying socialist :D Fucking youtube, man, it just blows my mind sometimes.
I know that since he mentioned it in his speech. If I'm invited to give a speech on a such important event/stage and my English has deteriorated, I wouldn't go there without translator.
He looks modest, with overweight still looks good and he act so humanly. I don't know describe that feeling. And, despite to that I'm not englishman neither asian guy, I think that he did good, when has decided that he not translate this song to English language. It's fine to know, and see, that people knows to be themselves and be proud of his home country! (anyway, my country is shit! :D). I think that PSY is more than only 'Gangnam Style'. He is for me very great inspiration. Thanks, PSY :)
