Both Puerto Rican singers/rappers Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee were already huge stars in Latin America before Justin Bieber even took an interest in their song (Despacito). Because he heard and saw the reaction of fans singing and dancing to it at a club in South America. With a population of over 660 million people in Latin America alone, Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee were already household names. What Justin Bieber's remix did was introduce it to his English speaking fans. But most of Bieber's fans were like, "Wait, this is a remake of a video/song? What's the original video/song?" and that blew up. I'm not saying it would have been big without his help, just that it only served to promote the original video and that's why it ended up blowing up globally. As opposed to his remixed version and video of the song. People just loved the original.

These are not up-and-coming stars. These guys have been stars for over 20 years. Daddy Yankee was already an international star; is a rapper and Reggeaton icon. Luis Fonsi is a Pop and Ballad star. They are both from Puerto Rico. This video was shot in Puerto Rico. The model is ex-Miss Puerto Rico and Miss Universe, and actress Zuleyka Rivera. At the begging of the song, you can hear a "cuatro" a Puerto Rican four-string instrument (it looks like a cross between a violin and guitar). Justin Bieber asked to collab when he hear the song.

BTW the Hot girl in the video. Zuleika Rivera Miss Puerto Rico 2006 and also miss Universe 2006.

totally wrong, the song was already very famous before bieber ruined it with his style. Furthermore, the original performers were already famous.
