At the Oregon State Hospital, the position of Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner is fairly new, but is a highly essential and advantageous role on campus. One of the primary roles of a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner is to assist in the diagnosis and proper prescription of medications for patients. This involves careful one-on-one work with the patient to find out what kind of medication functions best for them at ease to create a positive relationship with them. This can be through conversations which also function as helpful ways to diagnose patients. These small actions make up the careful and fastidious work a Nurse Practitioner does to truly understand their patient’s state of being. This is aided by the work the practitioner does in a team. At any given point in the day, a member from the interdisciplinary team will be on the unit, taking care of and observing patients. This dedicated work leads to noticing improvement or decline in patients faster which will overall better their stay at the hospital.
