The Sopranos is such a brilliantly written, directed and acted show, that on a 5th rewatch, you can still pick up certain new things you never paid attention too. It's like a gigantic painting, so many storylines in it, so many details and it logically all comes together in a big picture. I can not stress enough how much of a masterpiece the Sopranos is.
It’s crazy how Don is obviously the best person of these three since he isn’t a violent murderer. But I feel as though he might have been the worst father of the 3. Or he cares the least for them. Tony and Walter just can’t figure it out while Don can’t bother to figure it out.
Please do more of these, there's always more to break down, especially the new hit series The Boys, I can't wait for Dr. Eric Bender to break down Homelander who is a definitely a malignant narcissist at best
Don is SUCH a fascinating character. I love how such a manipulative person ends up working in ads, literally getting paid to get better at tricking others.
I’d like to see him react to the different villains of the walking dead, particularly Negan. Seeing his take on their villains (the governor, Negan, alpha and beta, and Pamela) would be very interesting
the stanford prison experiment is widely known to have bias and failed methods; it was more a result of the particular type of people they put in a particular type of situation with lots of outside manipulation. humans are certainly malleable, but not innately cruel.
Indeed. The folks conducting the study had a great deal of influence over how the "guards" treated the "prisoners". Terrible study to be upholding as support for real world human behavior.
Not based on my experience over the last 36 years…. People are selfish, greedy, and will absolutely screw over their own grandmother if it meant they could get something they wanted.
@@jliller It's easy to feel that way though, like he has these sort of "normal guy" problems and emotions, but that's the brilliance of the show, because ultimately, it's a just a smoke screen for a guy who does harm because he chooses to. (More detail my other comment above.)
I'd be curious to see his opinions on Lester Nygaard, Lou Solverson, and Ray Stussy. Oh, and of course, Ignacio Varga, lol. All very complex anti-heroes, even Lou who's moral compass is as straight forward as you can get.
@@Adski975 bro he worked for the salamancas by choice, he was a murderer, he assaulted, distributed, theft harmful drugs by choice just for money behind the back of the cartel, he used threats against saul..
@@afrosamourai400 Lester wasn't evil, he just snapped. Plus, I think the writers tried to redeem him by having him attack Malvo after the elevator killings.
I think breaking bad is the sopranos of this generation. This eternal being in tv/media that will never not be mention in the best tv show of all time.
I think what he means is Walt starts with the traits of a malignant narcissist and acquires the other traits of a sociopath as the show progresses. Mostly by feeding into it.
We need to undertand: Walter was always that egomaniacal and insecure monster who cared for nothing but his own ego and sense of self , he just took away the restraints
Hey @GQ Dr. Bender should do a video analyzing k-dramas they have a long list of shows with characters who have mental illness our personality disorders it would be very interesting to see that.
I never thought of Tony Soprano as an "anti-hero" - he was the protagonist of the story, but a VILLAIN. Time and time again, he goes through his personal problems and you might relate to that and feel sorry for him, and blame his upbringing, but in the end, he is just going to show his villainous true colours. He'll harm people to get ahead, he'll harm people to get out of trouble, and he'll even harm people just because he feels emotionally bruised and wants to make himself feel better by making someone else feel worse.
I would just call Walter White a villain or maybe a tragic villain(if I was being generous)-pretty much after he lets Jane choke, you are watching with grim fascination, rather than "rooting for him".
Walter White isnt an antihero hes straight up a villain. What heroic things did he do, that didn't involve self-serving or cleaning up the evil hes done because he can't live with the shame. Interesting, well written and enjoyable. But I wouldn't let him near any of ny loved ones ever.
Him referencing the Prison Experiment as a credible source really put me off. It's not regarded as a proper experiment anymore, the bias inflicted on the participants by Zimbardo is proven.
I know this might come off as mean but could you be considered narcissistic? Also, can these types of people ever change or like grow out of these afflictions? I kind of worry that sometimes I have these types of traits.
You can have narcissistic traits and not be a diagnosed narcissist. You can change if you’re a narcissist because it’s learned behavior/defense mechanism. Sometimes people get mixed up with psychopaths/sociopaths and narcissists.
If you fear you might be narcissistic and sociopathic you should try and recieve professional help. However it is also possible you may be afflicted with OCD where you convince yourself you're a bad person with these maladaptive traits. Given your concern you might need to talk to someone about this ❤
The funny thing about Walt having those traits before he even became Heisenberg is that he actually breaks up with his ex partner (Gretchen) before the events of the first episode because of how jealous he is that her family is wealthy.
To me Deadpool is the best example of a anti hero, such a hard life before the experiments. Truly a show of only doing things that push Im to keep going with no care of others.
I thought nostalgia entailed a vision about future even though the concept is about the past. It entails the aspirations of young people working towards a goal. So I thought I can name it 'nostalgia'. I thought anti heroes did not possess a nostalgic view where everything is in harmony, things have a worth. recetly I have come to the conclusion that it would be more correct to name it 'satisfaction'. So to sum it up I could assert that the anti hero lacks satisfaction, satisfaction being a vision about the future. she does not have a meaningful end goal, no 'happily ever after'. You claim they possess traits of the dark triad, what about satisfaction, would they ever be satisfied?
You get a sneak peek of Heisenberg in the first episode of Breaking Bad when Walt attacks the bullies who are making fun of Walt jr.! It shows his capacity for doling out his own justice! xoxo
Hate when people bring up the prison experiment like it wasn’t littered with issues that render it basically unusable for anything. The participants were prompted/coached, it wasn’t completely organic or spontaneous.
