Dr. Bender explains transgenerational trauma and the impact it has on mental health as experienced by Abuela and The Family Madrigal. Learn how such trauma results in the family not talking about Bruno, Luisa experiencing more than just Surface Pressure, and Maribel feeling so alone.

Hey man, there’s this really good and emotional movie called A Silent Voice. i’d recommend checking it out. the main character bullied a deaf girl in elementary school eventually causing her to leave, then a friend of his spread that history in high school making him separate himself from everyone. i won’t spoil the movie though.

Found you through a GQ binge and hopped over to here. Firstly, thank you so much for your work in not only explaining mental health issues but also helping reduce the stigma around them. I really enjoy your passion about the media you are reviewing. It's never just a superficial glossover, you actually take the time to understand and appreciate the movie/tv show. I love your content. I would love to see your breakdown of A Silent Voice too 🙃.

I'm really glad you've set up your own channel and I hope you have the time and resources to keep making videos. I think they're not only entertaining but valuable, and it's great how much effort you put into contextualizing the characters and events. I've subbed to the channel now so I'll be back for any new content you put up.

Hey Dr. Bender, I know you’ve been getting a lot of requests for different shows/movies to review, and I hope it’s not too overwhelming. I know you’ve reviewed some scenes from Bojack Horseman before in the GQ videos, but I think that would be a great one to do a whole episode on if you ever have time to watch and review it! Particularly, a lot of Bojack Horseman fans suspect that Bojack has undiagnosed borderline personality disorder that is the root of a lot of his problems. I think the scenes of Bojack’s childhood would be interesting to talk about too. I’m sorry this is so long winded and again I hope the requests aren’t too overwhelming!

Love what you’re doing. I sometimes feel ashamed for reading ”too much” into fictional characters, but honestly doing it has helped me resolve some personal issues before, and there’s some amazing ways that storytellers can bring things such as mental health struggles to light without very obviously forcing it down people’s throats. So I’m very glad to see someone such as yourself analyze and talk about these things. I’d be very curious what your thoughts are on Lucifer (the tv show), and how the complicated family dynamic has shaped the main character Lucifer, and perhaps whether you think any diagnosis would fit him. He deals with quite a lot of doubt regarding his own beliefs and sense of self, and appears to be resigned to be the bad guy that everyone expects him to be. I’d say self hatred is very prevelant in the show despite the main character acting in a narcissistic-like manner. Sometimes self-destructive or self-sabotaging behaviours are present. Loud, angry outbursts, sometimes triggered by mention of his family. At times when he expresses anger or sadness he very much acts like a child or teen in a fully grown, adult body. I think the show does a great job of putting down the base for excellent storytelling regarding the family relationships and Lucifer’s self perception, but I also wish they would’ve explored it more. Of course that’s sometimes how it goes in shows and movies when they need the story to move forward, haha. Even just Season 1 and 2 explore parts of it quite well, but of course they dive deeper as the show progresses!

@@dr.ericbender6371 Also, there´s a movie called "Moffie", it´s about a guy doing his military service in the SADF (South African Defense Force) in 1981. The Movie is about how he confronts and hides his homosexuality in a hostile environment. I think it has a really good psychological subplot, specially in the relationship with his father. The plot is also during the Apartheid regime, so it´s really good depicting that too.

This speaks to me so much, cause i'm this angry teen, and now partially lost adult, who's inharitated generational trauma and who's real identity was pushed far far away, because my mom was always angry with my real self, my real ambitions, my real emotions, and only wanted to see some image, that she created. Thank you for that video!!

It was blaring and obvious to me as a 2nd generation Mexican American daughter. True life is exactly as it is seen here. There’s a book called- Not your perfect Mexican daughter, and the entire time it makes it seem like the main character is not the perfect Mexican daughter when in actuality, the one who hid who she really was and played “perfect” to her family, was the one living a double life. Inter generational trauma is legit sad and painful.

hi, loved your cq interviews, im happy that you got your own channel. So, there are movies like this one were the psycological theme is very present in the story. I would love to see your input in a movie like midsommar because, the psycological theme is more subtle but is the core of the movie: Grief, manipulation, depresion, bipolar disorder, everything in relation to a cult and how cults make use this....

Hi Doc, another great video, I would really appreciate if you broke down I May Destroy You, a story about sexual assault and racial discrimination. Race is something that I feel isn’t explored enough through psychology. If you could elaborate on your thoughts that would be awesome

I really thought at 08:26 you would have said that the grandmother (in this case) should not have lashed out at here granddaughter. But instead you explained her point of view and her trauma's and I really get what she is also been dealing with. Everything she has to do to keep the family going. But I can't agree on how she is doing it (Abandoning Bruno, because he was telling the truth....) I get what she is doing but I don't agree how you can just cut someone off like that "we don't talk about Bruno" ...... Anyway, I hope you could give Modern Family a look. They all have some "mental" health issue's but I like your point of view. It is one of my fav. shows. Love your insights and hope to see more
