Thanks a billion for your excellent post 🙏🙏🙏 I am a board-certified consultant psychiatrist qualified in Iran. I have completed a 4-year full-time training program in psychiatry an have been working as a consultant psychiatrist for more than 3 years after successfully passing the psychiatry board certification exam in Iran. I am going to pursue a career as a psychiatrist in Australia and find your video very beneficial. 👌👌👌👌🌹🌹🌹
Hello! I have a question: Is it possible to first study medicine abroad (I am from the Netherlands, so I would study Medicine here for 6 years) and then move to Australia and continue the psychiatry specialty training there? Thanks a lot!
This is a wonderful video. I have been searching all year long for this information. I’m a trainee Psychiatrist in UK, hoping to get my CCT and get 3 years post CCT experience so I can be substantive comparable. I’m interested in working in Private Psychiatry in big cities like Sydney or Melbourne. I just wanted to know if it’s possible as an IMG. Also I wanted to know can I get visa sponsorship for private psychiatrist. Thank you very much
Hi i am an australian and i am planning to start a medical degree in the uk next year. I plan to then do 1 year internship in the uk and i hope to then come back to Australia to practice, Do you think the competent pathway would still be available for me after this whole process as it would likely take 5 years for the degree and 1 year for internship. Do you think australia would limit or stop img's coming to australia by that time. Thanks :)
Hello, Dr. Anthony, i am from Brazil and i would like to know if a MD Psychiatry from Brazil is comparable with the RANZCP. Here we have 3 years of speciality training after graduation. Thanks for helping us. Your channel is amazing
Hello Sir, thank you for the informative video. I am from India and have done DPM (Central Institute of Psychiatry, Ranchi), MD and have experience of 1 year, 2 mons of Senior Resident. Total- 4 years of training(DPM, MD) plus 1 year SRship. What pathway is best for me and what are my job prospects? Does being trained from CIP, Ranchi give me an advantage?
Hello doctor. Thanks for sharing this info☺️. I had a question. Does Australia also recognise DNB as post graduate qualification or only MD for India? Here in India both of them are treated similarly.
Hello doctor, great video. I’m an Indian medical graduate and I’ve just finished my internship here. Will I be able to get a psychiatry based job offer in Australia? Thanks in advance
👋🏻, I’m an IMG from 🇲🇾, wonder that will you be doing a similar video for general surgery prospect as well ? Always curious about training opportunities in 🇦🇺 for IMGs 😊
Thanks for the amazing video !! I'm a trainee psychiatrist here in India currently doing my MD I was wondering is there anything I could do during my MD that could improve my CV for a job in Australia.
Great video! If you haven't already, could you please make a video for International Medical Students? Those who completed their medical school in Australia and are looking to apply for internship and training in Australia. Any tips on internship ranking would be great!
Thanks, I have already made several videos on this topic. If you check out the videos on internship you will find some info. But I will put it on the list for a specific one for international Australian medical students.
Very informative indeed Can you give some info about O&G for SIMG ,how to find AON or short term training ;meanwhile when you have applied to ranzcog??
Hi Dr Anthony thank you so much for this detailed video. I'm a psychiatry resident in Cameroon, i will like to do my final year of residency in Australia. I am wondering how to go about it. Thank you for your help
Hi Elodie you could do this under the short term training in a medical specialty pathway. www.hnehealth.nsw.gov.au/hnet is my old training program and you can contact them for opportunities (let them know I referred you).
Hey sir! Hope you are doing well and are in pink of your health ,i had a doubt that what would be easier path to become psychatrist in australia 1. Entering australia via competent pathway and further process OR 2. entering australia after completing cct ( mrcpysch) in uk Please answer and take care!
Hello brilliant video thanks. Ive trained throughout medical school and psychiatry training in UK and have triple accreditation CCT in general adult, older adults and liaison psychiatry. I'm coming up to 1 year post CCT. I'm not sure if I understood, will I still need peer review to be comparable? Also, what job opportunities are there for liaison psychiatry in Australia? And lastly! If you're relocating with a partner who is a consultant in another specialty, not psychiatry, will the recruitment agency try to find jobs close to each other for the both of you? Thank you!
Hello Yasmin all good questions. Like I do with other posters I am going to take the first question and encourage you to ask one question at a time. Your assessment by the college determines your comparability status - see specialist pathway series - you still need to do peer review after this.
Hello Dr. Anthony, I am a current domestic medical student in NSW and interested in pursuing a career in psychiatry. I was wondering if you had any information about training programs in rural hubs along with my potential chances of getting on the training program from PGY2. Would it be easier for me to get onto the program and access to psych rotations by interning at a rural hub? Thank you for making such great content!
Hi Andrew your prospects of getting into psychiatry training are generally good regardless of whether you intern in the city or rural. Psychiatrists are fairly evenly split as to whether it's a good idea to start in PGY2 or not. Some like me reckon its actually better to do a couple of general years first. So you may want to get some opinions about whether PGY2 is good for you.
Hi, I really enjoyed your video. Can you pls make a video for foreigner immigrant that wants to work as psychiatrist in Australia. Where? How? Something like that. I will really appreciate if you do, Thank you in advance❤
A great and nice video. Which medical recruitment agent can you recommend for me. I love Australia and I will like to work there. I am from Northern Nigeria
I don’t know your qualifications and experience but it’s unlikely a recruitment company will be able to help you. Hi if you would like to engage my services then I recommend starting with a Risk Free Strategy Call my.advancemed.com.au/shop/landing-page-clarity-call/ Thanks very much Anthony
Hi thanks for the great video. I have noted that some older psychiatrists (graduated medicine in the 1980s), their aphra registration shows they are a specialist in psychiatry but under their qualifications, there is no FRANZCP qualification. Also on their website and on Wikipedia, it says that FRANZCP only account for 85% of all psychiatrists in Australia, which leaves 15 percent of psychiatrists that are not FRANZCPs, just wondering how these specialist psychiatrists (Non FRANZCPs) become specialists in the field of psychiatry?
Great question. It's likely that some of these Psychiatrists qualified elsewhere and did not take up the Fellowship with RANZCP. Also there are some Psychiatrists who have left the RANZCP (don't wish to pay fees or support it). You are not able to list FRANZCP unless you remain a paying member of the RANZCP.
Hi Dr Anthony, Great Video! I have had a look at the comparability criteria from The Royal College of Psychiatrists of Australia and New Zealand, one the the criteria which they have stated is doing 6 months in Consultation Liaison Psychiatry. If someone has covered liaison psychiatry in their oncalls but has not done a substantial 6 month post would this be enough to be considered or would You recommend that a 6 month post in CL is necessary?
In the video you said not having a formal CAMHS post is not a deal breaker and that you may need to do more in your 12 months of supervision would this also be the case if you do not have CL? Thankyou it just gives me an idea of whether I need to apply for a CL post in my Registrar training.
The less your training resembles the Australian context. The less likely you will achieve comparability. I think to help you further you would be best off booking one of my calls.
Not sure if I understiod you correctly. Do I have to apply for a position and get accepted before applying for having my specialist trianing approved ?
Good day Dr Anthony, thanks for the very helpful video indeed!👍 im a registered practicing psychiatrist trained in Malaysia (4 years masters in psychiatry) with 2 years working in our health ministry, may i know if you know of any recruitment agencies that might help/guide me to apply for a psychiatrist position in australia?
Hey! Thank you for a great video. I'm an Australian citizen but graduated from an Israeli University. Thinking of Taking AMC1 and 2 with the intention with speacilizing in Psychiatry. What are my chances in receiving a registar position in this field? Is it likely to recieve a position a large city? Thank you!!
Hello Dr Llewellyn, thank you for your awesome videos, I have not seen any other resource on the internet that was more detailed on the topic thanks yours. Thanks to your free courses, I understand the whole process for an SIMG way better. Just one thing, I am wondering, are the prospects good for substantial comparability for a French consultant psychiatrist that has 3 years of experience and 5 years training in psychiatry + 1 year of subspecialization ? I always see India or Competent Authority countries but not much Europeans😅.
Thanks for your kind words I've personally helped quite a few Psychiatrists from European countries achieve comparability. A lot of it comes down to your training experience and how this aligns with the RANZCP requirements.
@@CareerDoctor And from what you’ve seen with the RANZCP, do Western European countries (not UK or Ireland) psychiatrists have a good chance of finding a job and passing through all the RANZCP requirements ? Will the demand for psych SIMGs increase or decrease in the future ? I really wish to settle in Australia for sure. Thank you in advance
Hello Dr. Anthony! Quick question please I have completed and passed both AMC MCQ and clinical. I am currently completing my clinical residency in psychiatry in Ukraine. Can my clinical residency be compared to the internship?
Hey anthony thanks for your guidance via these helpful videos So i have cleared plab and am working in uk for a year so i will be eligible for the C.A pathway from the next year so should i directly come to australia for psychaitry training or wait and complete my cct in psychiatry and then come to australia .Thanks!
@@CareerDoctor thanks for your kind reply , although i have heard from people that completion of training in england is less hectic than in australia considering ranzcp exams ..is it any true? Also whats the pass rate of ranzcp? Thanks!
Thank you for your amazing videos, I have a MSC in Psychiatry from the UK, I have passed MRCpsych paper a and b .I have 6 years of work experience in a psychiatry clinic in Pakistan. What is the next step for me to work in NZ for training in Psychiatry? Thanks
It sounds like you have not worked in the UK or done the PLAB. Otherwise you would have probably mentioned this. You don't have a recognised specialist qualification. So you would need to start on the AMC Standard Pathway route in Australia or the equivalent in New Zealand which is the NZREX.
great video - irish citizen here, degree in italy, 3 years post graduation, have post grad diploma in psychiatry and currently working as locum in psychiatry. would i need to do the AMC exams? which level do you think I could enter in?
@@CareerDoctor thanks for getting back to me. Unfortunately I’m not a psychiatrist but hoping to pursue this in Australia. Is it possible to work in psychiatry straight away in Australia during the first year or would I have to do general medicine before applying? And can I apply to psychiatry training or have to wait until I have permanent residency?
@@marknixon305 you would have to do the AMC exams and it would be better to work in a general post for a year, although this could include some psychiatry
Hi, how much is the total fee for the 5 year RANZCP specialty program? During the 5 years of training with the college does the trainee gets any salary ?
Hi, thank you for this clarification Actually i have a question, i am from iraq, can i get MRCPsych certificate then work in Australia as a psychiatrist?
Hello, I’m a foundation dr from the U.K. I am keen to move to Australia after completing foundation programme. Is there any way to do psychiatry training as an IMG?
Hello Dr. Anthony, The video was great and provided a lot of very good information. I am currently doing my MD Psychiatry from the Arab Board of Medical Specializations which has 4+ years of speciality training, and aiming to finish by March 2021. As this program also abides by the training program from the UK I have also cleared all the MRCPsych exams and have attained the membership as well. I would like to know if MD Psychiatry from the Arab Board is comparable with the RANZCP. Also, it would be really helpful if you could let me know how the visa sponsorship system works if I were to hopefully get a job offer and a positive comparability.
Hello sir, If we get a comparble status through specialist route, do we get a registrar post. What is the process to become a consultant after getting through specialist pathway.
Hi Anthony. Thank you for your video. I am a registered Psychiatrist from Spain. I am doing a postdoctoral training in the US at the moment. I would like to relocate to Australia after finishing my training. I have read and seen your videos of specialist and competent pathway. I am eligible to register to the GMC in UK and work there at any public of private hospital without time limits. Would you recommend me to register to the GMC, have 1 year working experience in UK and then apply to the competent pathway? Does it makes a major difference choosing this route to get registered as a specialist in AU rather than opting for the specialist pathway recognition? If I choose the competent pathway as a specialist, would my degree in Psychiatry be automatically recognized by the college or would I still need to work under supervision for at least 12 months? Thank you for your feedback.
Hi Andres. Complex questions are hard to deal with effectively via YT comments. From what I have read you are not eligible for the competent authority pathway as you have not done the PLAB. It would be a good idea to get your CESR in the UK or Board quals in the US. I'd recommend you book one of my strategy calls for further advice.
I am working as a Psychiatrist in a Govt Medical college. To start as carrier as psychiatrist in AUS which one of below to do first 1 Find a jo in AON 2 Or Ist get assessment from Specialist Medical college

Hey Anthony thank you for the very informative video , how are prospects for south African qualified psychiatrist with Fellowship of the College of Psychiatrists of South Africa: FC Psych(SA). Do Aus and NZ recognize it at all thank you in advance !
Im finishing my degree in General Medicine In Russia. We have 6 years. But unfortunately there is no internship. What can I do ? Can I get into Australian internship? If in a future I would like to be Psychiatrist
If you are not required to do an internship in Russia. Then you won't be required to have this or registration purposes. You don't need to do an internship here.
So you find a job as a psychiatry registrar then apply for the 5 year speciality training with RANZCP. Will you complete the whole 5 years of speciality training at that job?
That’s essentially correct. If you’d like to discuss further feel free to book a call. Hi if you would like to engage my services then I recommend starting with a Risk Free Strategy Call my.advancemed.com.au/shop/landing-page-clarity-call/ Thanks very much Anthony
I am an doing a MD psychiatry degree in India..what do I require additionaly to apply for a job in Australia?Do I need to appear for any exam in RANZCP? If yes can you kindly tell me about it in details? Thank you.
Hello again sir! I wanted to ask that if i complete my mrcpsych plus cct in uk ..how strong are my chances for working in australia? I mean how tough/ easy will it be for me to work as psychiatrist in australia?
@@CareerDoctor hello again sir! Thanks for clearing my doubts i have one more here and that is if i enter australia via competent pathway and do 1 year internship would i be able to directly enter in psychiatry training or there would be some exam to give? If yes what will be chances? Thanks again .
You know Anthony, I have never imagined when I was a medical student that Australia is a good option for medical career. It seems that it's the best country to get specialist and subspecialist training ... Hope you good luck there ... And wish will be soon accepted in Australian doctors system.
@@CareerDoctor for me Anthony ... Specialty and subspecialty training is something like oxygen ... I don't care about other factors but I will never compromise continuous training. That's why I appreciate your system ... Good example for human beings.
@@CareerDoctor but the main two concerns that any young doctor will have about any country : is the system abusive against trainee? And is there any kind of discrimination against people who have different skin colors by workplace or society? What do you think about Australia in these two points Anthony?
You will get differing opinions as to whether Australia is a racist country or not. I believe there are definitely a small but significant number of people here (including doctors sadly) who are racist. But the majority are tolerant and embrace diversity.
@@CareerDoctor that's bad news because medical career carry real mental and health pressure on the medical workers. Adding to this some irrelevant behavior will really hurt them deeply, because I can feel it that our main concern in life is medicine and saving lives and don't feel belong to a specific country but to humanity.
Thank you so much sir for this informative video. Would you mind to tell me, which Australian exams an img should pass before applying for psychiatry training there?
Being a international medical graduate from Pakistan should exams should I pass and through which route I should apply to start my psychiatry training at Australia. My four years of Psychiatry training in Pakistan will be ending on the 31st December 2021.
It sounds like you would be looking at the specialist pathway. There are no exams to apply for this. As always I recommend booking an initial risk free call to discuss individual circumstances my.advancemed.com.au/shop/clarity-call-landing-page/

Very nice video! It's hard to find good information for all of the questions I have, but this answered a lot of them. I am a 2nd year psych resident in the U.S. looking to move to Australia as soon as possible. We have some family in Sydney so that's where we would be looking to go, and I have to say that it's quite discouraging to hear that we would be limited in options in that regard. I'd say Psychiatry is very well trained here in the United States and find it a bit odd for that level of need for further supervision etc. before being able to be a free-practicing psychiatrist in Australia given the similarities of our countries. Any specific tips on ways to speed this process up in the most efficient way possible to streamline a smooth transition to working as a psychiatrist in Australia?
Thanks for the feedback. Personally, I don't feel that a year or two year's further peer review / supervision is too much to expect when moving between countries. The process is similar for Aus Psychiatrists wanting to move to the US, UK etc... My best advice would be to familiarize yourself with the Aux/Nz training program and ensure you cover the key requirements in your own training to avoid there being issues. Most common problems are - not enough child psychiatry, not enough consultation-liaison psychiatry, not enough psychotherapy training and experience.
@@CareerDoctor I can understand that as well I suppose. But psychiatry doesn’t change country to country, and our standards are the same. Language is the same. Everything is the same. Seems like there is no wonder there is a shortage if there is so much of a process to go through just to practice something you already do at a comparable level. If I did any other profession out there it would be much easier to immigrate. And thank you! I didn’t think about that, and will certainly curtail my 4th year of residency to meet those requirements. Will definitely be asking you for a formal consult at some point in the process and look forward to it.
Hi. I will be graduating from the Georgetown American University, a university in the Caribbean, and I want to specialise in Psychiatry in Australia. What steps do I need to take? Thank you.

Will complete my MD in psychiatry from India by 🇮🇳 this year, can I start working as psychiatrist in Australia from next year or I need some more experience or need give some exam to start practice in Australia..... Like in Uk I can start practice without giving any exam once I complete by MD And in this November I will be having Canadian 🇨🇦 permanent residence (pr card)
Hey Vishal if you have got answer regarding psychiatry in Australia please do share...do we need to give any other exam or anything extra after md psychiatry
Great video , thank you very much …. I am currently doing my master of psychiatry course ( 4 years ) in Malaysia. What are steps or preparing I need to do to work or study further after completion of my course ? Thank you very much in advance 🙏🏻
To work in Australia? Probably the most important thing after finishing training is a solid 2 or 3 years work as a consultant. Also, make sure your training program mirrors the Australian program. You may benefit from a strategy call - link in description.
