The difference of Grandmere vs. Julie Andrews one of the many things I _preferred_ in the books when I read them. But those things just wouldn't have worked in a 2-hour movie--especially one produced by Disney! To me the movie is so different from the books that I don't even compare them; apart from the premise they have very little in common.

@@MsNanceePants Not to mention that it's kind of far from reality - European nobles and royalty who act that way become famous for it - there's always paparazzi about, and the upper crust kind of have to "maintain appearances" at all times - that said, they can of course be (and often are!) horrible people. But they wouldn't act like it. It'd be more polite and passive-aggressive in public, and nasty in the most polite and well-mannered way possible.

I love that the books then had Mia complain about how nice they made 'grandmere' in the movie by having julie andrews play her, lol.

I don’t even know if it’s possible for Julie Andrews to play character we’re meant to dislike. I mean, she is a fabulous actress, no question about it, but I would feel so wrong about hating her! I’m pretty sure the closest she ever came to being a villain was Gru’s mom in the Despicable Me movies, and she was an absolute delight!

I actually like Lily. In the first film. Heather Matarazzo played the part of a friend who was a little too opinionated for her own good at times, but I always felt she truly loved Mia and really stood by her when she needed it.

Came here to say that! My mother always felt a connection to Julie Andrews because she too had a beautiful voice with a great range that was destroyed by a botched surgery. Operating on the vocal chords is sooo tricky, one wrong move and you paralyze the chords.

Also--when Mia doesn't want to deal with the whole "being a princess" thing, she hides in her tower, like a cat hiding on top of the fridge bc it doesn't want to go to the vet. Her home is like a giant cat tree with the stairs and ladders and the firepole so mia is like a cat (a scaredy cat). Basically, fat Louis is both a mirror and partner to Mia. This is why his perspective is important during such an integral scene

The slumber party scene felt out of place, and definitely Hallmark-esque, especially after Mia wanted to focus on providing a shelter for the homeless families.

Oooo, I love this!!!!! Even if the diary is such a small part of the movie, I love this connection! Despite the various differences, both the movie and the book definitely focuses on Mia's development as a young girl to a woman.

Was just about to comment this! I almost thought the title was a direct reference to the novels. In the books Mia directly says wants to reach self-actualization many, many times-in fact I remember those books are where I learned the term from when I was reading them at ~10 years old.

exactly my thoughts!! Thank you! If I was her, if I was Lilly, I would've felt the same fear, the same envy because Mia had the chance of a voice and not taking advantage of it. She never wished for what Mia had, she just wanted Mia not to take things lightly. Why did she wanted her on her TV show? Not because of fame, it was because of the influence it could have and tell people to save animals. Was that a bad thing? I think not At the end, she never wanted to take advantage of Mia, like the bullies actually did, Lilly was hurt obviously, because of the betrayal. And again, if I was her, at her age, I would have acted the same...

Exactly this! Whenever I watch reactions to TPD, I always anticipate the reactors to just look at Lilly's character at face value and say "She's a terrible friend, she's so mean!" Probably only one reaction (The Movie Budz) actually understood that the way Lilly handled Mia's situation was, while still not the best, completely understandable. Like, imagine being Lilly, and having a best friend glued to your hip since childhood, then all of a sudden, that friend starts flaking on you without telling you why for several days, and then one day that friend shows up looking like the school's main bully, again with no explanation. How exactly was Lilly supposed to handle that? Honestly, this movie does handle teenage friendships quite realistically because both Mia and Lilly had bad friend moments, but they at least both made up for it. And while Lilly saying she needs an attitude adjustment doesn't automatically excuse her behavior, it at least shows she's aware that it's affecting her friendship with Mia and wants to do better. In short, like you said, Lilly is a good friend. She just handled things the way a teenage girl could realistically handle it, and maybe that's why most people don't like her. She's too real lol.

She is!! One of my biggest issues with the movie is Mia's activism is only barely mentioned - "Please don't crush my soynuts", when she's a vegetarian in the books and is constantly talking about animal rights and the environment.

It's actually a pet peeve of mine when they started advertising plant products as "zero cholesterol". They literally never had cholesterol as plants don't have cholesterol. Calling a plant product "zero cholesterol" is like calling sugar "low-fat". It's by definition, not that, you don't have to explain it.

This 100%, and also the conclusion of NOT choosing to get with the hallmark love interest, taking a stand for women's rights and importance as independent leaders, is SUPER important!! Because it tells young women watching the movie that they are just as capable leaders as men, and it is especially important to those girls like me who grew up in more conservative areas who are definitely not hearing this message as much, if at all.

I think this is a cultural thing. I'm from Canada and I'd say that's typical here too but I don't think it's typical overseas and it's definitely not typical in previous time periods. In many cultures, you're an adult long before 18 (like Hebrews (14), Latino culture (15), etc) so the expectations are quite different. Also, historically many people took leadership positions in their mid-late teens. Notably, Alexander the Great was 14 when he led his army to victory (for the first time, he was 18 when he began conquering a large chunk of the known world and was done by 30) and Cleopatra was 18 when she became Queen of Egypt. Augustus Caesar was 17 when he was going to join Julius' legions. Galileo entered medical school at 16 and started his scientific observations/work at 17 while still in school. More recently, Malala was 11 when she started blogging against the terrorists in her home area. Emma Gonzalez (of Marjorie Stoneman school shooting fame) was a high school senior when she became an advocate for new gun laws and Greta Thunberg was 15 when she began her environmental protests and a global environmental activist by 16. So, even in the modern day, teenagers are capable of becoming international leaders if given the right support.

Agreed! Including Fat Louie's POV IS PURRFECT! Cats are the ultimate introvert pet. Mia is such an introvert! It gives the scene a sense of comfort knowing that Mia's little spirit guide pet is watching. He's such a relevant character at times, and he's another way for the audience to even better understand Mia.

Omg you literally read my mind. As I watched this episode, I thought about other movies starring Anne Hathaway and of course The Devil Wears Prada came to mind and I was about to type the comment with the same suggestion for an episode. Personally I think they're all "villains" - her so called friends which enjoy the perks (as in, luxurious gifts) of her being an upscale fashion magazine employee but treat her like trash the rest of the time, her "caring" boyfried which makes her feel guilty about her wanting to pursue a career and Miranda herself who is, to say the least, violating her boundaries on numerous occasions. I did enjoy Meryl Streep's performance but the ending (which basically tried to sell you that her trashy boyfriend was right) was a huge disappointment.

@@annet4611 I hated her boyfriend in the film. He's so whiny and unsupportive. The job does take over her life which is unhealthy, but it's supposed to be a temporary thing to get her some experience so she can gain a job she actually wants. The whole time her boyfriend is sulking and saying she's changed when he should've been supportive and encouraging her to set healthier boundaries with a workplace that is obviously stressing her out.

If he wasn't okay with her taking this new job, he should have voiced that out instead of agreeing and then complaining about the lack of attention and guilt tripping Andrea. That's why I hate the ending, she should have seen him for what he is in a situation where she had needed his support but had only got more mistreatment.

Having heard many 7-year-olds sing, that is unlikely. But that doesn't mean you have to be extra cruel to them about it. They're young and bad at most things and that's perfectly normal. The important thing is to encourage them to get better at (virtually) everything. Everyone started at the bottom in terms of skills.

I thought that the dad's death was glossed over and treated rather callously... But then I read that in the books, he's not even dead, only sterile due to an operation, which means he can't have any more children, which makes Mia the sole heir to the throne. If this is true, could this be the reason people seem so callous in the movie, because the death was just an afterthought to the story?

I remember how sometimes, we as teenagers tend to say things like that to our friends because we're emotional, and we just need to let it out... yet we don't actually intend on doing so; we're just expressing how angry we are. Even things like "get over it" are made in relative self-absorbed moments, because we don't have the maturity to handle such things as adults do. We're not dealing with our emotions at that age; we're still merely acting upon them in many cases ^Taking it at face value is the definition of a mistake, because that's looking at it with adult perspective. Most teenagers say such things without thought, for better or worse, and we've all had moments like that in hindsight were just us being awful people... and yet, we still managed to get through things somehow. So I say we should have a bit more sympathy/empathy for such, regardless of whatever objective flaws the film might have in presenting it

To be fair, that might be a scripting/timing issue rather than overt canon. Ie. Toph's parents were never important enough to warrant screen time again rather than Toph never seeing them again. Like we also never got Aang's parents or him grieving them - again time limits.

Toph was kinda held captive and wasn’t allowed to be herself in her family, so it was logical for her to leave. There’s a whole background we don’t see so it can come across as ‘easily cut off’. And the other factor is like mrbrock said, time.

also the 2nd movie has a LOT of point about responsibility being an ongoing decision and choice. you can't just say "I'll do/be the thing" you have to learn and continue making decisions with that in mind and then accept when you make the incorrect decision and continue with the responsibility anyway. you guys should watch the 2nd movie again from that perspective

I am also autistic and I was bullied consistently up until high school. I recently realized that the closest friends I still have are people I met before the bullying got really bad and I lost my social confidence and trust in people. I have had friendly acquaintances since, but not any "best friends" other than a girl my childhood friend introduced me to, who I knew was a safe space because my friend trusted her. I still second-guess everyone, thinking that they're just being nice for show and don't really like me, even people I've know for over a decade! I'm 20 and I haven't started dating because of this. I just wanted to let you know that you're not alone and I relate to your struggle. Watching Cinema Therapy really is therapeutic in it's own strange and goofy way! Keep trying with those relationships and remember that over a million other autistic people are going through this with you!

I think part of what makes Dolores Umbridge so hated is that we all know someone like her. Most of us have never met a murderer, but we all know a bully. It makes the anger at her more real and personal. We want to see our bullies go down just like we want Umbridge taken down.

@@giggle_snort To be more technical, that may or may not count as 'real' torture (depending on when you define it). In the olden days, it definitely wouldn't have. Punishment and torture were considered non-equivalent. In modern-day, they definitely are considered equivalent, though. Olden-day torture was the infliction of pain to do things like acquire information or just because one was mean. Inflicting pain as part of the punishment was considered a different thing on the societal level. For example, when I was young, corporal punishment (the strap at school or spanking at home) was not at all considered torture. But by the current definition, it sometimes counts. It depends on your definition of "severe" pain whether it fits the torture definition. Under the current definition, technically many forms of speaking could be considered torture if you include mental pain or emotional pain. Heck, school and chores could be considered torture by some under that definition.

Yes! Lily is hurt that Mia was hiding something, and didn't tell her about the change in plans with the beach and everything, but like, who wouldn't be upset about that! She just handled that hurt poorly, but that to is understandable! We all do stupid stuff and handle things poorly sometimes when we're upset.

The most obvious difference between the books and the movie is her dad isn't dead which explains the point Ala made about that's not how monarchies work. In the books, her dad can't have more kids so she's the only heir.

I have a crush on the announcer guy in the second movie. Also, I feel like lilly kinda matures a little bit in the second movie but come on. If she's still causing trouble in college then she's not really even an activist, just an annoying girl who thinks she's doing something when she's really just causing trouble and annoyance. But to be fair, I'm pretty sure that lillys behavior in this is normal for a typical teenager

Lily was just badly written and I wish people would stop acting like she's a real person. Her dad line was just lazy exposition. I'm sure it would've been written differently if they knew adult children wouldn't shut up about it.

Possibly as he puts on a bit gruffer voice for Odo, where this was his natural speaking voice, which is a bit softer and smoother. If you've seem him in Boston Legal and alot of his voice work, you'd probably recognise it easier. When the letter started speaking, I went "that sounds awfully like Rene Abojonois, I should check IMDB" then Jono said his bit, was like, yep, I was right.

@@Scuzzlebutt142 Yeah, I could hear it once he mentioned it. I think I've only seen him in a single episode of Enterprise and one of SG1 and he definitely sounds grumpier in DS9. 😆

They even captioned him as Odo in this video. (I'm guessing Alan edits the videos.)
